Week of March 13, 2006

You can take "The Peacemaker," "Deep Impact," and "The Tuxedo." We'll take "Gladiator," "American Beauty" and anything else that didn't suck.

Emilio's 17

Yeah, like he needed all that overpriced crap anyway...

This lawsuit's going to make 'House Party' look like 'House Party Two!'

I told you... don't call me SENIOR!!

Maybe this is all a bad dream too?

Thanks Sharon, but I think I'll wait until this one comes out on DVD (so I can freeze frame of course)

There is absolutely, positively no nepotism in Hollywood. None.

You're good, baby, I'll give you that... but me? I'm magic.

This band will go down like a lead balloon

Well, Goodbye there Children...

They can't sell the Capitol Records building! What will be left to destroy in the next crappy 'end of the world' movie?

Same old Courtney - still sponging off Kurt

Panic on the streets of Austin

You're a fat, Botox faced, wig-wearing ninny! Oh yeah? Well your band has a dirty H addict as a lead singer!

GUESS HE CAN FINALLY QUIT THAT JOB HELPING PEOPLE TO THEIR SEATS:

Just three weeks after becoming the 8th artist to defeat himself at #1 on the Hot 100, USHER pulls something even more rare this week. He is now only the 5th artist, following 50 CENT, ASHANTI, the BEE GEES, and THE BEATLES, to place 3 singles in the Top Ten at the same time, in the entire 46-year history of the Hot 100.

Actually, USHER is only the 3rd lead artist to accomplish this feat, as both 50 CENT and ASHANTI were only “featured” artists on at least one of their 3 simultaneous Top Tens.

THE BEATLES first did this on February 29th, 1964, when “I Want To Hold Your Hand” was at #1, “She Loves You” was at #2, and “Please Please Me” jumped to #6, from position #29. That was just the warm-up for the Fab Four though...On April 4th of that year, they owned the entire Top 5.

The BEE GEES accomplished the Top Ten trio on February 25th, 1978, with “Stayin’ Alive” at #1, “Night Fever” at #8, and “How Deep Is Your Love,” holding at #10. Unlike the Beatles hits, all of these songs were on the same label (RSO Records), from the same LP (The SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER Soundtrack), and all three reached #1! (Please Please Me only peaked at #3).

WELCOME BACK “WELCOME BACK!”:

JOHN SEBASTIAN’S “Welcome Back” becomes the latest #1 hit to resurface on the Hot 100 as a remake, as MASE debuts this week at #52 with his version.

MASE’S version is only a remake in the loosest sense, since the verses are different, but it samples the original, and the chorus is still the same.

Sebastian’s original “Welcome Back,” which was the theme from WELCOME BACK KOTTER, was only the second TV show theme to reach the top, just three months after the “Theme From S.W.A.T.,” which was remade last year by DANNY SABER, as “S.W.A.T. 911,” for the soundtrack for the film version of S.W.A.T.

The new “Welcome Back” is also a welcome back for MASE, who hasn’t been on the chart in over 5 years. In 1997, MASE was a featured artist on two chart-toppers, “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down,” by PUFF DADDY Featuring MASE, and “Mo Money Mo Problems,” by NOTORIOUS B.I.G. Featuring PUFF DADDY & MASE.

ROCK & ROLL TRIVIA QUESTION:

LAST WEEK’S QUESTION:

Name the only Hot 100 hit where both the artist name and the song title are palindromes.

THE ANSWER:

No, it’s not that big hit from “Bob” called “Racecar,” this distinction belongs to that popular Swedish quartet ABBA! (which stood for Anni-Frid, Benny, Bjorn, and Agnetha)

Their big palindrome hit was: “SOS,” which peaked at #15 in 1975.

Interestingly, Austrian band EDELWEISS sampled “SOS” for their 1989 Modern Rock hit “Bring Me Edelweiss,” using the same melody, and changing the words just slightly.

THIS WEEKS QUESTION:

Below I’ve listed six top artists of the 1980s. Re-arrange the list by when they first reached the Top 40 on the Billboard Pop Singles Chart (oldest to newest.)

1) A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS
2) INXS
3) MADONNA
4) PRINCE
5) RICK SPRINGFIELD
6) TOMMY TUTONE

Answer next week!
