ROCK & ROLL TRIVIA QUESTION:
THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:
Below I’ve listed the five highest grossing films of 1977. On one of these classic films, all five of the top billed stars charted singles on Billboard’s pop singles chart. Which one?
1) STAR WARS
2) CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND
3) SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER
4) SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT
5) THE GOODBYE GIRL
FINALLY! THE ANSWER:
I’m sure you’ve all forgot the question by now, but I’ll answer it anyway. It’s SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT, #4, of course.
JACKIE GLEASON, who played Sheriff Buford T. Justice, was a staple on the Billboard single and albums chart up to the birth of rock and roll. His final chart entry was the instrumental “Autumn Leaves,” which peaked at #50, in 1955.
PAUL WILLIAMS, who also acted in the original PLANET OF THE APES movie, played Little Enos Burdette. Paul wrote many Top 40 hits in the 1970s (including: “Rainy Days And Mondays,” for the CARPENTERS, “Old-Fashioned Love Song,” for THREE DOG NIGHT, and “Rainbow Connection,” for KERMIT THE FROG, among others). He also had one chart hit as a performer, “Waking Up Alone,” peaking at #60 in 1972.
SALLY FIELD, the twice Oscar winning actress, had a real brief chart appearance, with “Felicidad,” which only managed to reach #94, back in 1967.
BURT REYNOLDS, who played The Bandit, obviously, had his required 1 chart hit in 1980. “Let’s Do Something Cheap And Superficial,” reached #88, and came from the soundtrack to SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT PART II.
Finally JERRY REED, who played “Snowman,” (that was his CB handle), had probably the biggest pop chart career of any “Smokey” star in the post-rock era. Reed had 10 pop chart hits, including two top 10 hits: “Amos Moses,” and “When Your Hot Your Hot,” both in 1971.
THIS WEEKS QUESTION:
I swear I’ll answer it a lot quicker than I did the last time! This one is a two-parter. Below I’ve listed several well-known actors who appeared, at least somewhat regularly, on popular TV series of the late '70s. First, match the actor with the series in which they were on. (That’s the easy part.) Then, the real question: All but one of these actors had a Hot 100 chart hit in 1978. Which one didn’t?
1) JOHN TRAVOLTA
2) SHAUN CASSIDY
3) DAVID SOUL
4) STEVE MARTIN
5) CHERYL LADD
6) JOHN BELUSHI
A) CHARLIE’S ANGELS
B) SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
C) STARSKY & HUTCH
D) THE HARDY BOYS MYSTERIES
E) WELCOME BACK KOTTER
Answer next week! (I hope).
