Week of March 13, 2006

You can take "The Peacemaker," "Deep Impact," and "The Tuxedo." We'll take "Gladiator," "American Beauty" and anything else that didn't suck.

Emilio's 17

Yeah, like he needed all that overpriced crap anyway...

This lawsuit's going to make 'House Party' look like 'House Party Two!'

I told you... don't call me SENIOR!!

Maybe this is all a bad dream too?

Thanks Sharon, but I think I'll wait until this one comes out on DVD (so I can freeze frame of course)

There is absolutely, positively no nepotism in Hollywood. None.

You're good, baby, I'll give you that... but me? I'm magic.

This band will go down like a lead balloon

Well, Goodbye there Children...

They can't sell the Capitol Records building! What will be left to destroy in the next crappy 'end of the world' movie?

Same old Courtney - still sponging off Kurt

Panic on the streets of Austin

You're a fat, Botox faced, wig-wearing ninny! Oh yeah? Well your band has a dirty H addict as a lead singer!

POP CHART NEWS

MISS #1 MUCH?:

Very rarely actually! But DAMITA JO may be the first album of all-new material by JANET JACKSON to miss the #1 spot since 1986, as the album debuts in the runner-up position.

Her Greatest Hits collection DESIGN OF A DECADE peaked at #3 in November of 1995, but every studio release since CONTROL has spent time in the top spot. DAMITA JO could rebound next week and slip up there, but it doesn't seem likely.

Here's Ms. Jackson's (I call her that 'cause I'm nasty!) album chart history:

JANET JACKSON (1982) peaked at #63, the biggest hit on the album was "Young Love," which made #64 pop, and #6 R&B.
DREAM STREET (1984) peaked at #147, the albums biggest hit was "Don't Stand Another Chance," #101 pop, and #9 R&B.
CONTROL (1986) peaked at #1. Its biggest hit was "When I Think Of You," which peaked at #1.
RHYTHM NATION 1814 (1989) peaked at #1, and featured "Miss You Much," which spent 4 weeks at #1.
JANET (1993) debuted and peaked at #1, and featured "That's The Way Love Goes," which spent 8 weeks at #1.
THE VELVET ROPE (1997) debuted at #1, and the CD's biggest hit was "Together Again," which spent 2 weeks at #1.
ALL FOR YOU (2001) also began in the top spot, and the albums title track spent 7 weeks at #1.

Incidentally, the real DAMITA JO is a legendary R&B/Pop singer best known these days for her "answer" hits "I'll Save The Last Dance For You," based on THE DRIFTERS hit "Save The Last Dance For Me," and "I'll Be There," a reply to BEN E. KING'S "Stand By Me."

I WILL ALWAYS LOVE #2:

No matter who performs it, "Love Song," seems destined to sit at #2. The original version, performed by THE CURE spent three weeks in the runner-up position on Billboard's Modern Rock Chart, back in 1989 (and also peaked at #2 on the Hot 100, that same year.)

Now, the remake by 311, from the soundtrack to 50 FIRST DATES, is holding that position on the current Modern Rock Chart.

If by some chance the 311 hit happens to make it to #1 on the rock chart, just to make me seem a liar, please forget I even opened my big mouth!

WARNING! PLUG ALERT!:

Since this weeks column seems to be sponsored by the number 2, I received a real swell email from a member of the band that has the #2 hit on my personal chart this week: THE MELIGROVE BAND, another of those brilliant rock bands from the great white north, which also boasts several others on my current favorite list, including: THE WEAKERTHANS, TREBLE CHARGER, and SLOAN.

Check out their site: here and by all means, grab yourself a copy of their new CD, LET IT FLOW, and it will flow!

ROCK & ROLL TRIVIA QUESTION:

Since 1970 he's had 21 Hot 100 hits, and included in those are remakes of popular hits by: THE EVERLY BROTHERS, BUDDY HOLLY, THE DRIFTERS, JIMMY JONES, INEZ & CHARLIE FOXX, SAM COOKE, and MARVIN GAYE. His Brother, Sister, and Wife have all had Top 50 hits, and his first chart hit was written about a friend who had committed suicide.

Who is he?

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:

It is of course, that smooth voiced easy-listening legend JAMES TAYLOR!

Among sweet baby James' hits are remakes of "Devoted To You," by THE EVERLY BROTHERS, "Everyday" by BUDDY HOLLY, "Up On The Roof," by THE DRIFTERS, "Handy Man," by JIMMY JONES, "Mockingbird," by INEZ & CHARLIE FOXX, "(What A) Wonderful World," by SAM COOKE, and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You,)" originally performed by MARVIN GAYE.

Both "Devoted To You," and "Mockingbird," were duets with his then wife CARLY SIMON, (the pair has since split-up,) and "Wonderful World," was credited to ART GARFUNKEL Featuring PAUL SIMON & JAMES TAYLOR.

His younger brother LIVINGSTON TAYLOR reached the Top 30 in 1979, with: "I Will Be In Love With You," and his little sister Kate reached the Top 50 in 1977 with a version of "It's In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song)."

Taylor's first hit, "Fire And Rain," which reached #3 in 1970, was written in response to a friend's suicide. Sorry, I just couldn't do a trivia question this time, but check back next week, I promise I'll come up with something!
