SEEMS LIKE ONLY “YESTERDAY”:
This is going to be another one of those “quick” columns. For one reason very little is happening on the Billboard pop charts, (in fact the only chart below that has a different #1 than last week is my Top 30 chart), and also, I’m currently slaving away at the Palm Springs Film Festival, and I don’t have much time.
Since the current chart is so dull, I think I’ll talk about something that happened on the Hot 100 40 years ago this week. It was the week of January 18th, 1964...BOBBY VINTON had the #1 song...but the big news was the weeks top debut. Coming in at #45 was the first song by THE BEATLES to enter the pop chart: “I Want To Hold You Hand.”
It would take the song only two more weeks to reach the #1 spot, where it would sit for 7 weeks (more than any other song that year), and in a mere two months, THE BEATLES would have the entire Top 5 locked up, something unheard of these days.
For the record, back in August of 1963 THE BEATLES’ single for “From Me To You” did “bubble-under” the Billboard chart, peaking at #116, but I don’t think that’s nearly as significant.
Well, regardless if you like THE BEATLES or not, if you care about this kind of stuff you have to admit that it’s a pretty important anniversary in Pop Chart history, although, I have to say that I’m no where near old enough to remember this event, nor am I old enough to remember when THE BEATLES broke-up! (But, I do remember when WINGS broke-up, wow! How sad was that!)

ROCK & ROLL TRIVIA QUESTION:
Test your rock IQ and answer my question!
LAST WEEK’S QUESTION:
Below is a list of well-known pop songs. They all reached the Top 40, but what very distinct fact do they have in common?
1) I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing (In Perfect Harmony)
2) Unchained Melody
3) At The Hop
4) Alley Oop
5) Macarena
6) You’ve Got A Friend
7) Abraham, Martin & John
8) Blue Suede Shoes
THE ANSWER:
All 8 of these classic pop hits had two different versions chart in Billboard’s Top 40, at the same time!
“I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing (In Perfect Harmony),” which was inspired by a Coke commercial, reached #7 by THE NEW SEEKERS, and #13 by THE HILLSIDE SINGERS, both on January 15th, 1972.
After appearing in the hit film GHOST, two different versions of “Unchained Melody,” both performed by THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS, made the Top 40. One was the Brothers original version that reached #4, in 1965, and the other was a newly recorded version, available on cassette single only.
Back in February of 1958, “At The Hop” was a #1 hit for DANNY & THE JUNIORS, and a #21 hit for NICK TODD.
In 1960, there were actually three versions of “Alley-Oop” to chart, but one only got to #59. THE HOLLYWOOD ARGYLES version reached #1 on July 11th, and a week earlier a version by DANTE & THE EVERGREENS peaked at #15.
Of course, back in 1996, the “Macarena” was such a national phenomenon, that while THE BAYSIDE BOYS English mix of LOS DEL RIO’S Spanish hit was at #1, the original version made it up to #23.
CAROLE KING was so hot in 1971, that two weeks after JAMES TAYLOR took her song “You’ve Got A Friend” to #1, ROBERTA FLACK & DONNY HATAWAY’S version was peaking at #29.
Seven months after DION took “Abraham, Martin & John” to #4, dueling versions by SMOKEY ROBINSON & THE MIRACLES, and bawdy black comedian “MOMS” MABLEY, were peaking at #33, and #35, respectively.
And finally, on April 28th, 1956, while CARL PERKINS original version of “Blue Suede Shoes” was at #5 (on it’s way to a #2 peak), ELVIS PRESLEY’S remake was at #20.
THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:
