Week of March 13, 2006

You can take "The Peacemaker," "Deep Impact," and "The Tuxedo." We'll take "Gladiator," "American Beauty" and anything else that didn't suck.

Emilio's 17

Yeah, like he needed all that overpriced crap anyway...

This lawsuit's going to make 'House Party' look like 'House Party Two!'

I told you... don't call me SENIOR!!

Maybe this is all a bad dream too?

Thanks Sharon, but I think I'll wait until this one comes out on DVD (so I can freeze frame of course)

There is absolutely, positively no nepotism in Hollywood. None.

You're good, baby, I'll give you that... but me? I'm magic.

This band will go down like a lead balloon

Well, Goodbye there Children...

They can't sell the Capitol Records building! What will be left to destroy in the next crappy 'end of the world' movie?

Same old Courtney - still sponging off Kurt

Panic on the streets of Austin

You're a fat, Botox faced, wig-wearing ninny! Oh yeah? Well your band has a dirty H addict as a lead singer!

POP CHART NEWS

January 7, 2003
By Roger Nead

WAKE ME UP WHEN SOMETHING INTERESTING HAPPENS:
Kind of a ho-hum start to the new year on the pop charts. EMINEM holds down the top spot on the Pop Singles Chart for a 10th week, forcing us to wait longer for the first #1 of 2003. Of the past 10 years, the year’s first #1 happened in January, five times. So chances are 50/50 that Slim’s “Lose Yourself,” will end its reign in the next two weeks.

THE DIXIE CHICKS reach the Top 10 with a second consecutive single this week, as “Landslide” peaks at #10. It’s the first Top hit written by STEVIE NICKS in almost 20 years. The last was “Stand Back” which reached #5, back in August of ’83.

ROCK & ROLL TRIVIA QUESTIONS:
Test your rock IQ and answer my questions!

LAST WEEK’S ANSWER: “This Top 5 Country hit from the 80s, is performed by a group who hit the Top 5 on the pop chart in the 60s, and the song’s title is the same as a popular children’s film from the ‘70s, and it was from the soundtrack to a sequel to one of the ‘70s’ biggest movies.” What is it? ANSWER: The song I was looking for was called “Charlotte’s Web,” it was performed by THE STATLER BROTHERS, who reached #4 on the Hot 100, in 1966 with “Flowers On The Wall.” “Charlotte’s Web” reached #5 on the Country Chart, in 1980, and was featured on the soundtrack to “SMOKEY & THE BANDIT 2.”

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:
The writer of this #1 hit from the 70s wanted to make a Broadway musical out of the song, but instead, it inspired two feature films. What song is it?

“MAJOR” TRIVIA QUIZ:
Okay, kids! These questions all surround musical majors:

1) This German pop artist had a hit in ’83 about a Major whose final words were: “Give my wife my love.” ....then nothing more! ANSWER: PETER SCHILLING’S “Major Tom (Coming Home)” hit #14, in 1983.
2) This cheesy movie Major, and the former SNL actor who played him are mentioned by name in Biggie Small’s #2 hit, from 1995 “One More Chance.” ANSWER: THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G. rapped about MAJOR PAYNE, and Damon Wayans, on this hit.
3) This musical “Major” was once a member of THE DELFONICS. ANSWER: MAJOR HARRIS went solo in 1975, and hit the top ten with “Love Won’t Let Me Wait.”
4) This R&B “Major’s” biggest hit, was called “Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um.” ANSWER: MAJOR LANCE also hit the top ten with “The Monkey Time,” in 1963.
5) This British pop band took a song about Majors, and some of their military superiors to #104, in 1981. ANSWER: XTC’S “Generals & Majors” hit #32 in the U.K.
6) Major Tony Crease led this band to #11 U.S., and #1 U.K. in 1972, with the biggest pop hit to use a bagpipe as the lead instrument. ANSWER: Major Crease led THE PIPES AND DRUMS AND THE MILITARY BAND OF THE ROYAL SCOTS DRAGOON GUARDS, who did probably the most famous instrumental version of the 1840’s classic “Amazing Grace.”
7) On this #7 pop hit from 1974, PAUL McCARTNEY thought the Major was a lady suffragette. ANSWER: The second top ten hit from WING’S 1973 album “Band On The Run,” was about Paul’s dog, and was called: “Jet.”
8) DAVID BOWIE’S Major Tom, from his 1969 hit “Space Oddity” was feeling very still, although he was more than this many miles above the earth. ANSWER: Major Tom was floating in his “tin can” past 100,000 miles.

YOU KNOW MY NAME (LOOK UP MY NUMBER):
Answer these questions about pop hits with numbers! (Extra credit if you know what my headline refers to!)

1) “One” was a big hit for THREE DOG NIGHT, in 1969. But, a year earlier, “One” was a lonely number, for the songs writer, whose single version didn’t even make the chart! Who was the writer of “One?”
2) Numbers make up 4 of the 8 characters in the title of the CHICAGO song, that the group took into the top 50 two different times! What song is it? 3) What time are the young girls coming to the canyon, in a top 20 hit from 1967?
4) Before they counted down “10-9-8” on the pop charts in 1984, FACE TO FACE supplied the vocal backing for a fictional band in what Walter Hill film?
5) What is the age of RICK JAMES’ “almost jail-bait” girlfriend, on his final Top 40 hit?
6) The only Hot 100 hit from CITYBOY, is made up of the last four digits of a phone number. What are they?
7) According to WILSON PICKETT, dialing what phone number will you reach “Soulsville, U.S.A.?
8) The “Theme From The Threepenny Opera,” is better known as what classic pop hit?
9) This Top 40 hit from 1966, could just as easily be called “14.” What is it?
10) Who might answer, if you call 867-5309?
