MEET THE BOXSET:
As the Christmas holiday looms record labels rush out many CD reissues and boxsets hoping to snatch your hard earned cash. One label has combined the two and has a #35 debut this week.
Capitol Records claims the spot with THE BEATLES boxset THE CAPITOL ALBUMS, VOL. 1, which features reissues of the first four US releases by the fab four on Capitol records. Well, sort of…
Included in this set are: MEET THE BEATLES!, the first charted album by THE BEATLES, which spent 11 weeks at #1 originally, THE BEATLES’ SECOND ALBUM, which was actually their fifth charted album, but the second on Capitol records. The second album spent five weeks at #1, beginning in May of 1964. Next up: SOMETHING NEW, which spent nine weeks at #2 in the summer of ’64, stuck behind the soundtrack to THE BEATLES’ film A HARD DAY’S NIGHT, which was on United Artist Records, but SOMETHING NEW did include 5 songs that were on the European version of the HDN soundtrack. The fourth CD in the new boxset is THE BEATLES ’65, which logged nine weeks at #1 beginning in January of 1965. Missing in this set it THE BEATLES STORY, a two-album release that featured interviews with the boys along with snippets of their hit songs. “Story” reached #7 in December of 1964, and perhaps will be included in THE CAPITOL ALBUMS, VOL. 2, along with other US only releases: THE EARLY BEATLES, BEATLES VI, “YESTERDAY”…AND TODAY, and HEY JUDE, but probably not.
AND IT ONLY TOOK A DECADE:
More than a decade after they first reached the Billboard Top 40, two long time chart veterans are having their biggest hits.
Country artist TIM MCGRAW first cracked the Top 40 in the spring of 1994 with “Indian Outlaw,” which peaked at #15. Up to now his biggest hit on the pop chart was “It’s Your Love,” his #7 duet with wife FAITH HILL in 1997. Now MCGRAW has found his way to #3 with “Over And Over,” a duet with Hip/Hop star NELLY, which is probably the oddest paring in the Hip/Hop world, at least since JAY-Z sampled “Hard Knock Life” from the soundtrack to ANNIE, back in 1999.
Rap legend SNOOP DOGG is also currently reaping his biggest reward on the Hot 100, with the #2 hit “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” featuring PHARRELL. Snoop first cracked the Top 40 in December of 1993 with “What’s My Name?” which peaked at #8, as did his second single “Gin & Juice.” Snoop’s previous high on the Hot 100 was last years #6 hit “Beautiful.” Actually, the first song to chart that featured Snoop was 1993’s “Nuthin’ But A “G” Thang” which also peaked in the #2 spot, but when it charted “Nuthin’” was only credited to DR. DRE.

ROCK & ROLL TRIVIA QUESTION:
LAST WEEK’S QUESTION:
Of the nine Jackson siblings: Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, Michael, Randy, Rebbie, LaToya and Janet, who was the only one NOT to appear on a single that reached the Billboard Hot 100 chart, in 1984? (HINT: it’s not a trick question, they all released singles that year!)
THE ANSWER:
Well, Michael was at the height of his career and made the Hot 100 with the singles “Thriller” (#4 in March), and a remix of a ten year-old recording called “Farewell My Summer Love” (#38 in June), not to mention he joined his brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Randy for three hits from the brothers VICTORY LP: “State Of Shock” (#3 in August), “Torture” (#17 in September) and “Body” (#47 in November), Jermaine also charted with the solo hit “Dynamite” (#15 in September), oldest sibling Rebbie hit #24 in December of ’84 with a song written by Michael called “Centipede,” and troubled sis La Toya charted with her only Hot 100 hit, “Heart Don’t Lie” (#56 in June). That leaves Janet, the youngest of the Jackson clan as the only one not to make the pop chart in 1984. However, Janet’s ’84 single “Don’t Stand Another Chance,” did “bubble under” the Hot 100 at position #101, and make it all the way to #9 on the R&B chart, truly making 1984 the year of the Jacksons!
THIS WEEKS QUESTION:
What R&B/Jazz superstar charted on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart with a record of cover versions of each song from THE BEATLES Abbey Road LP?
Answer next week!
