OH NO, HE’S BACK!:
Yes, I’m afraid it’s true, just when you thought it was safe to go back to the Poop Shoot, I have returned! First off, my apologies to anyone who actually missed the pop chart news, I took a job on a couple of VH1 shows, and they required all my time (not to mention my valuable pop music knowledge). Well, now that the shows have wrapped and life is returning to normal I need a place to release all the crazy pop culture crap that clogs up my mind on a daily basis (and my friends tell me if I bore them with another useless pop music fact they’ll kill me!) So, hopefully the forgiving Movie Poop Shoot readers will welcome me back!
A lot has happened since I last threw one of these things together…that goofy guy who reminds me of my crazy uncle got elected president…or maybe it was that guy who reminds me of my crazy cousin, I forgot which…OL’ DIRTY BASTARD changed his name again, to OL’ DEAD BASTARD (uh-oh, sorry, just a little joke, don’t shoot me man…WU TANG forever!)…and…uh…well, I guess that’s all that happened, but then there’s these little tidbits:
USHER and ALICIA KEYS’ “My Boo” has logged five weeks at #1 now. Boo is the seventh #1 for USHER (and his fourth #1 this year alone, following “Confessions Part II,” “Burn,” and “Yeah!,” “U Remind Me,” and “”U Got It Bad,” both from 2001, and “Nice And Slow,” from 1998), and the second #1 for Keys (following “Fallin’,” from 2001). It’s not the first time two artist with solo #1 hits teamed up for a “superstar” #1 duet, FRANK and NANCY SINATRA teamed up for 1967’s “Somethin’ Stupid,” BARBRA STREISAND and NEIL DIAMOND hit with “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers,” in 1978, Barbra also joined DONNA SUMMER on 1979’s “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough),” DIANA ROSS and LIONEL RICHIE sang about “Endless Love,” in 1981, PAUL McCARTNEY teamed with STEVIE WONDER (“Ebony & Ivory,” 1982), and MICHAEL JACKSON (“Say, Say, Say,” 1983), KENNY ROGERS and DOLLY PARTON topped the chart with their duet “Islands In The Stream,” in 1983, ARETHA FRANKLIN and GEORGE MICHAEL hit with “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” in 1987, and George also hit #1 with “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me,” a duet with ELTON JOHN, in 1992, and R. KELLY and CELINE DION teamed up on 1998’s “I’m Your Angel.” And that’s not counting chart topping solo artist teaming up with bands who reached #1 previously, members of bands who reached #1 previously, #1 hits featuring three or more previous chart topping solo artists, #1 hits by two solo artist who would have solo #1 hits later, or hits by #1 artists “featuring” other #1 artists. That would take too much time to list, in fact, just explaining it took too much time!
Several albums make early debuts on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart this week, due either to street date violations, or record labels moving release dates up to counter piracy. EMINEM’S “Encore” makes it to the top of the chart with only three days of sales, after being moved up a half of a week, and new releases by DESTINY’S CHILD, LIL JON & THE EAST SIDE BOYZ and CHINGY also make earlier debuts than planned, which ought to make next weeks chart interesting since all four should make rare surges up the chart.
Things don’t look so good for EMINEM on the single front though, Encore’s first single “Just Lose It” didn’t chart as high as the first releases from his previous three CD’s (“Lose Yourself,” the first release from the 8 MILE soundtrack hit #1, “Without Me” the first release from THE EMINEM SHOW hit #2, and “The Real Slim Shady,” the first release from THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP, peaked at #4). The new CD’s second single “Encore” also seems to be losing steam quickly, after debuting at #60 last week, it only makes a two spot jump to #58.
LIL JON and DESTINY seem to be doing better, “What U Gon’ Do” the first single from LIL JON’S CRUNK JUICE is up to #44 this week, and the second release “Lovers And Friends” debuts at #36, while DESTINY’S CHILD’S “Lose My Breath” sits at #3, “Soldier” makes it’s debut at #41.
Also worth noting this week on the album chart, the debuts at #2, #3, and #4 are all greatest hits packages (see the chart list below), and all are titled “Greatest Hits” (however, BRITNEY SPEARS GH release is subtitled “My Prerogative,” after her remake of BOBBY BROWN’S chart topper from 1989, which appears as a new track on the CD.) Prerogative is Spears’ fifth charting album, and the first not to debut in the #1 spot, …BABY ONE MORE TIME debuted at the top in 1999, OOPS!…I DID IT AGAIN, did it again in 2000, BRITNEY started off at #1 in 2001, and last year IN THE ZONE burst into the chart at #1.

ROCK & ROLL TRIVIA QUESTION:
LAST MONTH’S QUESTION:
Below, I’ve listed some well-known pop hits. At first glance, they don’t seem to share anything in common other than then they all went to #1 on the Hot 100. But, think hard and figure out what other distinct fact all these songs share!
“I Honestly Love You” by OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN
“At This Moment” by BILLY VERA & THE BEATERS
“Red Red Wine” by UB40
“December, 1963 (Oh What A Night)” by THE FOUR SEASONS
“Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix)” by LOS DEL RIO
“Light My Fire” by THE DOORS
“Baby, Come To Me” by PATTI AUSTIN & JAMES INGRAM
“When I’m With You” by SHERIFF
THE ANSWER:
In the time it took me to update my column, you all could’ve easily looked up the answer, but in case you didn’t, here it is:
All these #1 hits had an additional chart run besides their trek to the top. In the case of “I Honestly Love You,” “December, 1963 (Oh What A Night),” and “Light My Fire” the songs reached the top on their first chart runs, and then re-charted later due to a resurge in airplay (in the case of “Oh What A Night” it was a new “remixed” version).
The other songs didn’t do so well on their first trip to the Hot 100, but made up for it the second time, climbing all the way to the #1.
THIS WEEKS QUESTION:
Of the nine Jackson siblings: Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, Michael, Randy, Rebbie, LaToya and Janet, who was the only one NOT to appear on a single that reached the Billboard Hot 100 chart, in 1984? (HINT: it’s not a trick question, they all released singles that year!)
Answer next week!
