Week of March 13, 2006

You can take "The Peacemaker," "Deep Impact," and "The Tuxedo." We'll take "Gladiator," "American Beauty" and anything else that didn't suck.

Emilio's 17

Yeah, like he needed all that overpriced crap anyway...

This lawsuit's going to make 'House Party' look like 'House Party Two!'

I told you... don't call me SENIOR!!

Maybe this is all a bad dream too?

Thanks Sharon, but I think I'll wait until this one comes out on DVD (so I can freeze frame of course)

There is absolutely, positively no nepotism in Hollywood. None.

You're good, baby, I'll give you that... but me? I'm magic.

This band will go down like a lead balloon

Well, Goodbye there Children...

They can't sell the Capitol Records building! What will be left to destroy in the next crappy 'end of the world' movie?

Same old Courtney - still sponging off Kurt

Panic on the streets of Austin

You're a fat, Botox faced, wig-wearing ninny! Oh yeah? Well your band has a dirty H addict as a lead singer!

POP CHART NEWS

By Roger Nead

July 6, 2004

IF I’VE TOLD YOU ONCE, I’VE TOLD YOU A HUNDRED TIMES:

There’s 100 pennies in a dollar, 100 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and now there’s 100 “Pop Chart News” columns on moviepoopshoot.com. Even more exciting is the fact that this is the 20th interesting “Pop Chart News” column! Ok, not really...this one isn’t very interesting at all. But, read on anyway. You might be tested on this later.

”I BELIEVE” AMERICAN IDOL IS PRETTY BORING:

It also seems like the 100th time I’ve had to write about effect that the Fox reality TV show American Idol is having on the US pop music charts.

This week, 3rd season winner FANTASIA becomes the 3rd American Idol finalist to top the Hot 100. 1st season winner KELLY CLARKSON did it first in October 2002, with: “A Moment Like This,” and 2nd season runner-up CLAY AIKEN topped the chart in June of 2003, with: “This Is The Night.”

“I Believe” is only the second single to debut at #1 on the Hot 100 since 1998, but the 13th single to start off at the top since 1995.

Here’s a list of every single to debut in the #1 spot since the Hot 100 chart began in 1958:

“You Are Not Alone” by MICHAEL JACKSON, September 2nd, 1995
“Fantasy” by MARIAH CAREY, September 30th, 1995
“Exhale (Shoop Shoop)” by WHITNEY HOUSTON, November 25th, 1995
“One Sweet Day” by MARIAH CAREY & BOYZ II MEN, December 2nd, 1995
“I’ll Be Missing You” by PUFF DADDY & FAITH EVANS, June 14th, 1997
“Honey” by MARIAH CAREY, September 13th, 1997
“Candle In The Wind 1997/Something About The Way You Look Tonight” by ELTON JOHN, October 11th, 1997
“My Heart Will Go On” by CELINE DION, February 28th, 1998
“I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” by AEROSMITH, September 5th, 1998
“Doo Wop (That Thing)” by LAURYN HILL, November 14th, 1998
“I’m Your Angel” by R. KELLY & CELINE DION, December 5th, 1998
“This Is The Night” by CLAY AIKEN, June 28th, 2003
“I Believe” by FANTASIA, July 10th, 2004

Fantasia’s hit also puts an end to USHER’S 19-week reign at the top, and stops him from becoming the first artist since THE BEATLES to have 3 consecutive #1 hits, as his latest “Confessions Part II” is destined to be the next chart topper.

ROCK & ROLL TRIVIA QUESTION:

LAST WEEK’S QUESTION:

Below is a list of four male pop singer/writers who’ve all had varying degrees of success on the Hot 100. In terms of their pop chart success, they all share one very distinctive fact in common. What is it?

1) BOB DYLAN
2) GENE PITNEY
3) RANDY NEWMAN
4) BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

THE ANSWER:

All four of these pop stars have written #1 hits for other artists, but only managed to make it to #2 themselves.

Dylan wrote “Mr. Tambourine Man,” a #1 hit for THE BYRDS in 1965, but his biggest hits as an artist; “Like A Rolling Stone,” and “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35,” both peaked in the runner-up spot.

Pitney wrote “He’s A Rebel,” which was a #1 hit for THE CRYSTALS, but in the ultimate in irony, his biggest hit as an artist; “Only Love Can Break A Heart,” was kept out of the top spot by “Rebel” back in 1962.

RANDY NEWMAN wrote the first #1 hit for THREE DOG NIGHT, “Mama Told Me (Not To Come),” in 1970, but as an artist he peaked at #2 with “Short People,” in 1977.

And the boss’s composition “Blinded By The Light” was a #1 smash for MANFRED MANN’S EARTH BAND, in 1977, but Bruce’s biggest recording remains the #2 peaking “Dancing In The Dark,” from 1984.

THIS WEEKS QUESTION:

Below is a list of well-known pop songs. Which one doesn’t belong on this list, and why? 1) I Heard It Through The Grapevine 2) Rockin’ Robin 3) Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me 4) Endless Love 5) Total Eclipse Of The Heart 6) Can’t Help Falling In Love 7) A Groovy Kind Of Love 8) MacArthur Park Answer next week!
