RECAP
Is there a such thing as a sudden-death overtime for box-office grosses? Because after this weekend's too-close-to-call race between Fox film MINORITY REPORT and Disney's LILO & STITCH, there really needs to be some sort of easy tie-breaker. That way, both studios can save time accusing the other of over-reporting their numbers in an attempt to add the "#1 Movie in the Nation" disclaimer to their newspaper ads.
At the end of it all, MINORITY REPORT is claiming just over a million more in ticket sales than the Disney animated flick, but let's be honest here. No one involved wants this movie to join FAR AND AWAY as the only other Cruise picture in the last 10 years to fail to claim the top spot in its opening weekend. To paraphrase a Chris Rock bit, "I'm not saying Fox should have padded their numbers...but I understand!"
Meanwhile, Disney is claiming that when all is said and tallied, their movie will come out on top. Regardless, the studio has to be happy to have their highest-grossing debut since THE LION KING. And exit polls have been very well-received as well, which can only bode well for SCOOBY DOO's imminent drop-off.
However, SCOOBY still inexplicably took in $24.4M, proving some families couldn't get into LILO & STITCH and chose the only other family-friendly (if not sanity-friendly) movie available to them. This number is down 55% off its opening weekend, yet the movie is still on its way to collecting $160M Scooby snacks.
THE BOURNE IDENTITY looks to be on its way to becoming one of Matt Damon's biggest hits, as its $54M total in 10 days puts it firmly on track to be close to a $100M movie when all's said and done.
Ben Affleck's THE SUM OF ALL FEARS also came close to the $100M, as its $7.9 million put it around $97M after four weeks.
WINDTALKERS is sucking wind right now, looking to be on pace for a total gross of around $40-45M, barely a third of its budget.
And, in yet another movie whose title makes lame wordplay so enticing, JUWANNA MANN found out that not many people wanted it, as it debuted with a $6M take. However, the movie seems somewhat review-proof, as test audience scores and its per-screen average were both more than respectable.
DIVINE SECRETS OF THE YA-YA SISTERHOOD's $5.7M take pushed it close to $47M total thus far, while the final two movies in the top 10, ATTACK OF THE CLONES and SPIDER-MAN, closed in on $280M and $390M, respectively.
Next weekend, audiences will get a chance to show whether or not they've tired of the same ol' Adam Sandler movie as MR. DEEDS opens.
