The Wayans bros. have given Herman, Lily, Grandpa, Marilyn and Eddie Munster a new lease on life.
Keenen Ivory, Shawn and Marlon Wayans have made a deal with Universal Pictures to write and produce a modern-day take on "The Munsters" for Universal Pictures. Rick Alvarez will also produce through Wayans Brothers Prods.
While it's not unusual for the Wayans to make their productions family affairs, this one's unique in that they don't intend to star in the pic.
Keenen Ivory suggested a contempo take on the classic series and asked his reps to seek out the rights holder. It's possible that Keenen Ivory will direct the film, but no deal has been made.
While the Wayans haven't previously made a film for Universal, Keenen Ivory worked with U worldwide production vice chairman Mary Parent on the 1997 New Line Cinema pic "Most Wanted."
Produced by Universal Television from 1964-66, "The Munsters" is the story of a suburban family that resembles an assortment of 1930s movie monsters and can't understand why they always seem to frighten the neighbors.
Thanks to the pop culture afterlife, "The Munsters" has lived long beyond its brief primetime stint on CBS. The sitcom's 70 episodes have remained in continual syndication and currently occupy a nightly slot on Viacom cable outlet TV Land. Ben Stiller also created a long-running character based on his interpretation of Eddie Munster.
Parent and senior VP Holly Bario are the production execs.
Today, Universal Home Entertainment also released "The Munsters: The Complete First Season" on DVD and VHS. (As reported by VARIETY)
