Hi this is Mark Smith and I wanted to drop you a line about "The Amazing Joy Buzzards" which is a comic book for hipsters and cool people and in short the Movie PoopShoot Crowd. So with trying to get the word about this book out to the right audience, I'm posting links and the recent press release from Image Comics. It's going to be a very fun series and worth checking out, trust me!
![]() Supernatural rock and roll/wrestling fun from Image Comics ORANGE, CA -- 15 September, 2004 -- This December, Image Comics will hijack the minds of bored readers everywhere and send them on an electric thrill ride with the world's number one rock and roll band as they battle giant robots and evil witch doctors, and explore the supernatural with their mythical Mexican wrestling pal, El Campeon! In other words, this ain't your father's rock and roll band. The Amazing Joy Buzzards is a monthly rock and roll adventure brought to life by writer Mark Andrew Smith and artist Dan Hipp, exploding onto the charts just in time for Christmas. Despite the fragile nature of the world around us, writer and co-creator Smith thinks the time is right for high adrenaline musical mayhem on the comic book page, and cites an array of diverse influences. "The book draws from Scooby Doo for the fun, Speed Racer for the adrenaline surges, and Herge's Tintin, because I loved the idea of doing a traveling book, which a band was perfect for," notes Smith. "'A Hard Day's Night' was a huge influence on the book, too. The Buzzards definitely have mobs of screaming women following them around everywhere they go and they're larger than life" "The influences and the tone will change throughout the series and that's a great thing," enthuses the writer. "I think that our overwhelming enthusiasm and love for this project will shine through." The Joy Buzzards consist of three main characters: Biff Ashby, the narcissistic, trouble-making lead singer, Gabe Carlyle, the level-headed drummer whose archeologist father has vanished and Stevo Vargas, the multi-talented bassist/martial arts expert/racecar driver with a penchant for kicking evil into the corner where it belongs. So who is El Campeon? "El Campeon is a mystical Mexican Wrestler that comes to people in their time of need," answers Smith. "He's a bit clumsy and messes up a lot, and when he's not battling the forces of evil he's been known to sleep for weeks. He loves cereal. El Campeon can be summoned by Gabe, who wears a magical talisman and when Gabe says the magic words Go El Campeon Go!, our Mystical Mexican Wrestling Pal spills forth from the talisman like a genie to lay the smack down and save the day." Image Comics Executive Director Eric Stephenson, a diehard musicologist himself, knew Image was the perfect place for the Amazing Joy Buzzards to call home when they weren't out blowing minds with their music and saving the world from evil with their hard-hitting ways. "I think the success of titles like The Walking Dead, Ultra and Invincible shows that readers want their comics to say something new," says Stephenson. "Mark and Dan have come up with a concept that's irresistibly fun, something that should appeal to music lovers as well as comic book lovers. It's not a spin-off, it's not a relaunch and it's not a revamp -- it's something genuinely different from everything else on the rack." Reserve your tickets with your local comic shop, and be sure to catch the gang each month as they make comic book and rock and roll history in the pages of The Amazing Joy Buzzards! Hey Mark! Congrats on your comic. One of the regular contributors to the site, Matt Singer ( The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly) has a thing for Mexican Wrestlers, so you might be in the right place.
But here's the thing: You're posting a commercial, right? And it's understandable that you want to get the word and whatnot, but if you want to win us over then you've got to make a gesture. In other words, we want free stuff! If you'd be willing, as an act of good faith, to sign one of your books and give it the PoopShoot, they could probally hold a contest to give it away to one lucky reader, assuming the Editor-In-Chief approved of the idea. They've done that sort of thing before and it's a great way to promote your book. And, also, a great way for one of us to win free stuff. One comic wouldn't be a lot to pay for the otherwise free advertising you're getting by posting here. If you're keen to the idea, contact the Editor-In-Chief, Chris Ryall. cryall@moviepoopshoot.com And good luck with your book! |
