Doctor who & the matrix!?

I have a question.
I'm watching the show "players" on G4 (a 24 hour a day network devoted to video games) and at the end of the show
Liam Lynch of "United states of whatever" fame is talking about Doctor Who and an invention called the "matrix" back in 1973!
It sounded a whole lot like Virtual Reality, etc.
Now, I'm a big cyberpunk fan, and have not heard of this before. Can anyone give me some more info on this?
He went on inferring that the Wachowski bros. basically stole ideas.
Which is the way I feel about them too.
Anybody?

It's different.
I have to do a lot of exploration before I make a final judgement.
The music scene here seems to be non-existant.
Know anything about this whole Dr. who thing?

Nope. Hence my off topic remark.

"Matrix" has many different connotations in science.

Here's soemthing I found after a very brief search on Google: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho/...ntinuity.shtml

Based on that it appears the matrix is the dimension that ties time and space together. It is what Dr. Who travels through in the Tardis. However, some bad guy turns it into a fictional world.
Totally guessing here.
