I dug around and couldn't find a tech help thread. I figure with the multitude of geeks, nerds, and technophiles slinking abouts at The Stop, it might be a worthwhile resource.

I'll start with an issue that I'm having:
When trying to do video capture from my 8mm Camcorder using Sony Vegas, I get this error message:
The device Hauppauge WinTV 885 Video Capture could not be opened. Please make sure that it is turned on and is not being used by another application of user.
I also find that the Hauppauge device is the only device that pops up when I attempt to do video conferencing via Skype. My camera is not recognized if I plug it directly into the Hauppauge card, AND no other devices are recognized due to the Hauppauge device being the only recognized device.
Help?

My only idea would be to check your drivers.

http://www.hauppauge.com/site/support/support.html

Also, have you tried starting up your computer with everything already attatched? Perhaps check your task manager to see if a background program is automatically opening when you start up your camera.

My only other idea is to check the camera's settings to see if there is an alternate mode to feed video through the cable without having it record to the camera's internal memory.

These are wild stabs in the dark, but they're the best I've got.

Didnt think 8mm cameras can digitize considering they're not digital.
From what we were taught in college it's actually impossible (to the best of my memory) without an expensive doo-hickey

All good suggestions. I'll try them and let you know the result.

That's the purpose of the capture device (i.e. the Hauppauge card). It takes analogue signal such as 8mm, VHS, or standard cable, and digitizes it. That's how folks are able to convert their old VHS home movies to DVD and what not.

I'm having a hard time finding the capture program. I just went to Vegas because I knew it had a capture option included.

Basically, what I'm trying to do (besides capturing video from old tapes) is to use my camcorder as a camera to set up a video studio in the office, so that we can can do some video podcasting also.

I think if you check under Control Panel>Device Manager, you will find your hauppage card on a list somewhere. I think you can right click and go down to Properties. I think that tells you all the necessary info.

Alrighty, so I've got a Linksys Wireless-G Adapter hooked up to my Xbox. Its worked fine for me in the past, but now its not connecting. I can attach it to the wireless router, however, it keeps giving me a message about the adapter not receiving an IP address from the router.

I recently reset my router and got a new modem. My DHCP is set to assign automatically and I can find nothing on google that tells me how to fix it.

It might be a problem with how the adapter is set up, but I just don't know how to change it.

The Xbox itself says something about the MAC address and anything I looked at online said that I need to assign a static IP address to the adapter...

I understand computers but I'm in over my head here. Help?

First thing I would try is to plug your Xbox into the router using an ethernet cable. Sometimes that's all it takes to make the hardware work together in harmony. Then you can unplug it and by a process I call "Freaking Magic," the wireless connection works again. That worked for me when my laptop was giving me grief.

If that doesn't work, try http://www.portforward.com/guides.htm.
I believe the site's main function is to help wireless routers overcome problems involving firewalls for the purposes of online PC-based gaming, but there is stuff about finding MAC addresses and static IP addresses on there.

If you are also running a computer through that same router, and the computer is working fine, you can use the computer to find the router's IP address by looking at your properties for the wireless connection. I've never used an XBox before, but if it has a web browser, you can enter that IP address into the XBox browser's address bar to bring up the router's firmware menu. There may be some security settings you need to adjust on there. I don't know the specifics, but I believe the portforward guide does take you through the steps necessary to get your router up and running properly.

Hope all that helps; let me know.

MAC address is a number that every piece of networking hardware has (it has nothing to do with Apple/Mac vs. PC). It will look something like this: 00:27:4b:c5:2f:6c.

the MAC address for a piece of equipment should never change. Both your x-box and your adapter should have their own MAC addresses as well as the router. But you really shouldn't have to worry about them. MAC addresses are totally separate from IP addresses.

If the adapter and the wireless router aren't connecting as they should, you can also try to power cycle everything. I would recommend unplugging everything, waiting 30 seconds, then plug your wireless router, wait 30 seconds, then your x-box, wait 30 seconds, then your modem. That can help resolve any address issues.

if that doesn't work you should post the exact error message your x-box is giving you.

Some wireless networks require that you provide for them the MAC address of every device connected wireless to the network (for security purposes). I don't know this because I'm smart, I know this because I fought with my wireless modem for about a week before I realized all I needed to do was provide the MAC address...grumble.

Most of those linksys routers have an IP address like 192.168.1.1... However if you completely reset everything or switch modems, the router might increment the addresses, so now its broadcasting an IP at 192.168.1.2, or the subnet masks may have changed.

Don't give up the fight! Everytime I think I've mastered these linksys routers, I run across a new problem. But I've yet to be defeated by them.

Sounds like it would work, but I can't get my hands on the 50 feet of ethernet cable that I'd need to direct connect. I did it before without an ethernet cable...I should be able to do it again, right?

My router is a NETGEAR WGR614 v7. The wireless receiver that's attached to my XBOX is a Linksys Wireless-G Gaming Adapter WGA54G v2.

Well...if they're anything like Quest, they should provide you with an IP you can type in to your browser bar. It should take you to a place where you can configure your network, complete with entering in MAC addresses that will be allowed. I think that would solve your problem. Give them a call and ask them about it.

Try looking in the advanced menus (lower left hand corner).

Also- did you try to power cycle everything?

The problem is that the x-box isn't communicating with the wireless router, so it can't get a valid IP address from it (which it needs to connect to the internet).

This might be because your wireless router only accepts certain MAC addresses (to prevent people from piggybacking on your internet connection). But i think that is unlikely.

More likely is that when you did a reset of your wireless router, the x-box went all funny. You could also try disconnecting the wireless adapter form your x-box and then putting it back in.

I agree...I think in advanced settings, there should be a set up screen where it asks you if you'd like to allow MAC addresses. Might just take some poking around.

On a related note...if you don't know your XBox MAC address...how do you find it?

Right...so I finally found out how to allow MAC addresses in my router settings...

I'm completely lost.

EDIT: Wow, that was wonderfully retarded.

My router's default settings were to not have any access control for MAC addresses. This is taken directly from my routers settings page:

"By default, any wireless PC that is configured with the correct SSID will be allowed access to your wireless network. For increased security, you can restrict access to the wireless network to only allow specific PCs based on their MAC addresses."

Now, I had given my XBOX all of the information, and it connected to my router (NETGEAR) but it wasn't getting an IP address (as you might know).

I had to turn ON access control for MAC addresses, then add the XBOX to the access list, even though technically, there was nothing stopping it from accessing the router anyways...

I hate these gorram computers sometimes...

BTW, my mouse is now broken thanks to my friends cup of tea or some shit. All the buttons are sticking.

I loved this mouse. :(

EDIT #2: Hey! I have XBOX Live again! :D

donkey
07-25-2009, 09:30 AM
Glad you got it fixed!

You might also try now, takign the mac address filtering off now, and see if the xbox still holds the IP.

but you are honestly better off with the MAC address filtering. Just remember you have it on when a friend brings their laptop over and asks to get on the internet..

this is the problem. Most email programs have a built in filter so you cannot attach .exe files. Rename it .jpg and let the person know they have to rename.

Does anyone here have a version of Adobe Flash?

Okay, I decided to make a new thread on this since it's irking me so.

I'm trying to find a wireless card and router combination that is good enough to game on and not have school work interupted on.

This is the computer I'm getting. (http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/CyberpowerPC-Gamer-Ultra-A101-Desktop-PC/4810626/product.html)

As you can see I have plenty PCI slots and I'm going to be running windows 7.

The less I spend on this the better but I'm looking to only spend about $120 or less. Previous attempts to look into this have given me anywhere from $89-$108 totals so I really want to be in that range.

I would like to get this stuff from Amazon if possible but any reputable site will do.

My computer knowledge is limited so please don't hit me with a bunch of words I never heard before ^.^;

At my work the wi-fi is provided by these little Apple transmitters on either side of the libray.

They have a generally good broadcast range and it covers 95% of the space that people would ever sit.

We have recently had a few connectivity problems with Macbook Pros and the AirPort software. After a quick google check I see that this is a software problem and the only quick solution to the issue is a reboot of the computer or a restart of the AirPort program.

The error message says something akin to "AirPort is set to self-assigned IP address, this network might not connect correctly".

Looking past the hilarity of people buying a $1600 laptop to have it fuck up with a wi-fi system made by the same goddamn company, would anybody know any other fixes for this problem or has anybody had any experience with this problem?

So I got my computer adapter and router and have it all hooked up. Router is configured and everything.
The problem is that the internet is telling my computer it can not has connection. It's on the right channel and the router is settled. I think the problem is with my computer or the adapter.
Anyone have any ideas what did this?

Having a nightmare with Final Cut Express today.

It suddenly won't let me play imported video files without giving me both these two messages.
"General Error"
"Error: Out Of Memory"

Well, shithead, I've got plenty of fucking memory and I've deleted any fucking files associated with you that I can find.

FUCKING WORK!

So I figured that since alot of us on here know a lot about technology I would create a tech questions thread for people to ask questions whether it be on what to buy, how to fix something, or what web service to use.

So I'll start of first, I wasn't sure whether to create two posts and separate my introduction from my first question or if I should combine them into one. My question is I have a wordpress blog and I am attempting to upload some 39 images into one place, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a gallery/ sideshow plug in to install. I also don't want to have to sign up for anything or upload my images to any place other than my personal web server.

I keep running into lightbox unfortunately as far as I understand it it requires you to add photos to their system and I want to be in control of them. I'll keep looking though. Thank You

I've always hosted them myself, full control. I can't see where it says you have to use their system - could you point it out and I'll take a peek.

I was given the task of finding a GPS sytem for my in-laws. Does anyone have one that they would recommend?

How old are they and how is their eyesight? For screen size

Do they have a cell phone with Bluetooth? Handsfree calling

Do they regularly travel out of the country? Some GPS systems have maps for only one countries or parts of neighboring countries, others have more expansive maps

I guess I should have mentioned that they are farmers. Technology isn't their friend.
I was thinking that a 5 in screen would be good, no bluetooth and besides fishing trips to Canada, they rarely travel outside the US.

Does anyone have any experience with creating a website that allows for reader added content? I want to create a site that allows for readers to add their own content to the site. I am thinking about using Drupal though I have never used it before has anyone here used Drupal or know of a better option. I know I am sounding very vague I am trying to keep the purpose of the site a secret while it is under development

Haven't really heard of anything for this. Google brings up Tumblr and its option to allow reader submitted content. (http://www.centernetworks.com/tumblr-submissions) Seems risky though; allowing anyone to post. Could get crazy. Although, crazy could be what you're looking for!

A micro blog wouldn't really suite my needs though so I guess I will try to learn Drupal

On another note does anyone know of software that will monitor you whole home's bandwidth usage, I don't want to measure one PC I want to measure every PC including non PCs like PS3s, iPod touches, networked Blu-ray players everything in my home that connects to the internet. The reason why I want such software is so that if I am doing something online and my connection speed is very slow I will be able to see what is hogging the connection, I also want to see my monthly usage specifically if it surpasses or comes dangerously close to the 250GB Comcast limit

I need to rip a video from youtube as I've lost the original and if you download it directly from your account it arrives terribly pixelated.

Does anyone use any programs to record stuff from youtube? Any recommendations for a program? I'm googling information but not getting any good leads for the best one to use.

If you have Firefox, this (http://www.downloadhelper.net/) worked for me.

The site itself has all the instructions on how to do it.

Hmmm, if it downloads HD video to a high quality it will be worth downloading Firefox for.

Edit: no clue about HD quality.

I'll give them a go.

Katie, my friend who did The Tastydactyls vid, is looking for some of the footage to put on her show reel.
I lost the original file when my hard-drive crashed so I'm gonna try and get something half decent for her. I'll give them a go, I'll let you know how I get on.

I just tested it out as I haven't used it in a while. I downloaded a hd video from you tube and it looked pretty sharp. All you do once it's set up is click the symbol on the page. It downloaded to the desktop very quickly as an MP4.

Uhh, I've got that as a decent quality (480x270) mp4. If those add-ons don't work for you I could upload it to Megaupload or something.
