The Deepwater Horizon explosion happened on 4/20/2010.

I was just on the coast for a few days the week after it started. If it's not stopped today, it will be August before they try anything else.

Pretty messed up post from a man in oil and gas production talking about how BP and the government are fucking up the clean up efforts. (http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2010/5/11/11558/1890)
By the way although I'm sure JK will take this as a personal attack against him I need to be clear right off the bat that it is not.
Although if we were to blame people it would be the people who called for deregulation because regulations were hurting big business. This was also the people who said drill baby drill and when we said it wasn't safe they said take a shower hippie. So go ahead blame Obama even though you Republicans always want the government to stay out of your lives. I guess you can pick and choose what you can criticize your opposition over even if it makes you hypocritical and even if your parties policies caused the whole disaster to begin with.
One) Even though you say it's not, obviously my one, obtuse statement in this thread was enough to set you off. It's pretty obvious what your diatribe is all about...
Two) This is the first accident of this magnitude in 40 years. While the blowout, the utter destruction of the rig, the deaths of eleven men, and the subsequent leak are heart wrenching tragedies, off shore drilling has a pretty good track record.
Three) If the namby-pamby NIMBYs would get out of the way, these oil companies wouldn't have to drill in mile-deep water where the risks and the challenges are exponentially higher. There is oil closer in to the coast. Hell, there is oil ON land, but we can't get it because for some reason oil is bad.
IT'S A NATURAL SUBSTANCE.
And right now, it is what fuels the global economy. We can't put the entire world market on hold while some Gaia-worshiping granola crunchers try to figure out how to convert unicorn farts into electricity. Sorry, couldn't resist.
Four) In relation to No. 1 - how many times must I say it? I AM NOT A REPUBLICAN. I am a Constitutionalist. For all practical purposes, I am a Libertarian.
Five) Nobody here blamed Obama. He himself said he (both personally and by proxy through his administration) was on the scene from day one.
Six) I don't quite understand the last bit of your argument- it sounds like you're trying to parrot the pundits' attack on Bobby Jindal, when he demanded the feds get off their asses and do their jobs and was called a hypocrite because of his continued push for less government. If so, you failed horribly.
There are some things that the Federal government are supposed to do. There are some things that the Federal government shouldn't do but do anyways. Their response in this case was lackluster and abysmal. They (and you) can't blame Bush for that.
And rounding back to the start, you said this wasn't a personal attack on me, but you and I and every one here knows that I am the focus of your anger and vitriol, not some faceless entity or even the oil spill, for that matter.
So yeah... clown shoes.

You need to understand that criticism of a certain point of view is just that a criticism of a point of view, not a personal attack on those people who hold it. Once people start calling others "Un American" or "with the terrorists" is when it goes from civil argument to offensive. I never singled any one person out.

Oceanographers have predicted that crude oil from the leaking undersea well could be carried as far afield as Florida Keys, Miami and Cuba by strong currents in the gulf.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. It could still break through the earth and that would be a whole new nightmare scenario.
The amount of oil naturally leaking through the ocean floor every day far exceeds the amount of oil spewed from the busted BP well head. Of course, it's spread out across the entire globe, but still...
Again, not to lessen the degree of this disaster, but when compared to the total volume of the Gulf, the amount of oil from this leak is actually pretty insignificant- just looking at it from a purely scientific, unemotional point of view...
It is a disaster. But it will pass, eventually.

There's still a lot more water than oil. So the oil will be diluted, eventually and currents take it all over the world.
Like with water and oil in a bottle, the oil will sit on top - but in a whole ocean it's like you've started shaking the bottle sending the oil everywhere. It will only come back together when the ocean stops moving - which it never will.

Oooooh I get it now. Thanks.
Excuse my naive nature, but what does that mean?
The Gulf of Mexico contains about 6.43 x 1017 gallons of water. 64,300,000,000,000,000,000 gallons. The estimate total amount of the oil leak varies, but most estimates I've seen are around 5,000 barrels a day- over 85 days, ignoring the previous caps that slowed the flow, that's around 23.4 million gallons of oil. Even if it is closer to the high end estimates I've seen of 9000, it's still less than 50 million gallons of oil. So if we create a ratio of gallons to gallons, using the high-end of 50M over that big-assed number...
50,000,000
64,300,000,000,000,000,000
I have to do this part on paper...
That's 5 gallons of oil for every 6.43 trillion gallons of water. One gallon of oil for every 1.286 trillion gallons of water. If you take the ratio all the way down to the water volume being that of an average bathtub, the amount of oil would barely even be considered a trace.
Eventually, any oil not picked up by the skimmers will dissipate, evaporate, or be consumed by nature. It will take some time because of the concentration, but I highly doubt it will be more than five years.
On a side note, did you know that if you spill a gallon of milk, you must follow the exact same guidelines designated by the EPA for an oil spill when cleaning it up?

It was similar at Home Depot, but I worked in the paint dept with all sorts of fun, hazardous chemicals. About 40 hours of training as well, mostly on that.
It was a pretty fun job, though it was hard work, and it's no fun trying to explain paint to people who just don't get it. Or don't want to listen to anybody under 50, for any reason.
