Basically want us all to discuss or just comment on cartoons of yesteryear. dating back to early 70's and I'll just pick two for now.

Dogtanian & the three muskerhounds, as my avatar suggests Dogtanian was pretty much the three musketeers with cartoon dogs, but was also a faithful adaptation of the stories, a second series was made in 1990 sporting new voice actors and animation, but was less recieved than the first cartoon.
THe first series showed young pup Dogtanian leaving home to become one of the kings muskerhound guards, by episode 2 he had broke his sword, been mugged of his money and forced to leave his horse at an inn as an insurance until he could pay for damages.

Second cartoon I'll discuss is Pro stars, I dont remember much about it other than it starred Bo Jackson, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky. and each used their sporting skills to take on various baddies.

In keeping with the sports theme of your second pick, i'll go with the Super Globetrotters, a late 70's cartoon about the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team. they each had wacky powers, befitting the time. One guy could pull anything out of his huge afro, one guy turned into a giant basketball, another turned into a rope or spring or spagetti or something. And like most "Scooby Doo" rippoffs i think that they traveled around in a van solving mysteries. (My favorite Scooby rip-off by the way, was clue club, don't ask me why)

Were these "pioneers" before or after '92??

i don't know the exact year of that shows debut, but i found several VHS tapes while cleaning out a closet the other week, and they had several hours of vintage B&B episodes on them, complete with the videos. Classic stuff. The videos make the show. I wish a DVD would come out that included the video segments, you think that the rights are too expensive to have these songs included? If so that's too bad.

If I remember correctly, their show first started in the year 1992. It may have been 1993, but I know I was in the eighth grade at the time. They had also made appearances on Liquid Television around 1991.

Wow, that is amazing. Only show I remember that way is South Park, summer before 5th Grade (I think). My mom saw it in September and forbade me. Didn't watch it again until my dad let me in 7th grade (as long as I didn't tell mom, we know who wears the pants in my family). Now on my way to 11th grade, I watch it sporadically(sp??).

The absolute classics for me, pre-1992, would have to be Voltron (the one with the lions; the one with all the cars was OK) and Robotech. I'd discuss them, but I just don't know where to begin. Maybe later, unless someone wants to help me out.

The G-Force that was out in the late 70's was great. I beleive they re-did it in the 90's but it wasn't as good. There was also another cartoon out at about the same time that I always watched, but I can't remember the name of it. It was about an old WWII battleship that was made into a space ship. It would go off and do battle with the bad guys. Damn, I wish I could remember the name of it.

What about Battle of the Planets? Didn't you just wanna "transmute" every time you saw it? Wasn't Princess kinda hot, or is it just me?

ratm, what the hell are you talking about?

And how come you don't remember Battle of the Planets? It was a good cartoon. You're older than I am! You should remember more! Hell, they have it on DVD now!

I remember battle of the planets, the artwork looked pretty much like the original Speed racer, or that "alll your base" video. And they wore thoe birdlike space helmets.

Battle of the Planets IS the 70's G-force.

Yep, G-Force was repackaged as Battle of the Planets!

Yes, I knew G-Force was redone, but I didn't know it was called Battle of the Planets. I liked the original G-Force better. Oh towlie...what was I talking about before? I couldn't remember the name of the other cartoon I liked, but then I remembered it.

Also, yes I am older than you. That is why I sometimes have problems remembering things.

Dave

ok so here how i think the cronology goes for G-force, i'm not sure of exact dates.
early 70's Gatchaman airs in Japan

Late 70's some american guy buys the US rights to that show, redubs the V.O. with an american cast (including Casey Casum) and adds "starwars" type characters such as the Robot 7-zark-7, and cuts much of the violence (especially that agianst women)and calls it "Battle of the Planets"

early 90's: Turner buys the american rights and airs the show without Zark, and much closer to origanal Japanese version, but still sanatized, highers new vocial talent, and names the kids other names. Calls the show G-force.

Sometime after that, a later version of the Gatchaman show ( i believe there were 3 series) is released in the US under yet another title, this one i can't remember but i think it was something like Eagle Squadron or something, agian the names are changed

2001 or there abouts: the Battle of the planets cartoon from the 70's is released on DVD by Rhino records, i buy a copy and am disappointed by the crappy cartoon i thought had been so cool.

Okay, thanks for the clarification. It was called Battle of the Planets in the late 70's, but the team was still called G-Force. Okay, all I remembered was G-Force. So, I guess I can now say I watched Battle of the Planets in the late 70's.

Underdog and Thundercats. Not sure on the years but those were great cartoons. And the original ghostbuster the one with the monkey. Oh and the show Laser Tag, not to sure if it ever took off but I have an episode of it on a tape.

I was lucky enough to watch Thundercats the pilot (exodus) and I cant believe how semi stupid it is, liono aged about 15 years, despite being about as big as wile-e-kit and wile-e-kat initially, maybe his stasis pod was broken allowing him to age, also when Jargar gives them their weapons they are all magically skilled, panthro just flipped his nunchukas around like he taught bruce lee. Liono is so stupid as well, and mummra is near immortal, and then they ruin it by something as stupid as being afraid of his own evil reflection, this kind of thing was easier to swallow up as a kid, but still its fairly cool, I'm not sure when it aired but I'd say thundercats was probably aired between 85-87, there was about over 150 episodes so I guess thats somewhat impressive for a cartoon.

I think this came out in '92 and is the reason I started to watch Anime, it televised once on liquid television and I have been looking for it ever since:

Running Man Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KP4czrq0cI)

Running Man Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Df-4MHbvqnQ)

Still seems to hold up after all this time.

What about Ulysses 31? with probably the most blatant ripp-off of a lightsabre not to be sued by Lucas. I'm sure thats pre-92

Anyone remember the Gobots? Dino Riders?

And I'm sure there was a cartoon called Jason and the Argonauts - or something similar. It was a Sci-fi; Jason had a team of cool vehicles which he could control, and each episode he battled some sort of green plant alien/ monster thingy that always conquered worlds...

Perhaps I was dreaming that last one...

Poor Antonio, all his favorite cartoons were commercials for toys.

Sheriff excellent, post. I'm off to watch part two.

Poor Antonio, all his favorite cartoons were commercials for toys.

Hey! Who said anything about them being my favourites! Mine were the Thundercats, Tranformers and He-Man, although, arguably, they were all commercials for toys too...

There was also one about 2 kids and a huge golden eagle. City of Lost Gold, i think.

Hell's yeah. That was like french import or something (for us in the US, anyway) right?

It came on Nickelodian on weekend afternoons along with the show about the boy and his dog in the alps.

Omaru

It was a french-japanese collaboration which makes it my first unintentional taste of Anime.

As for the other show...... white fang?

I am in possesion of about 20-some-odd episodes of Bat Fink on 16mm film reels. I keep meaning to get a projector or get them tranferred. Or just sell 'em.

Just watching all the old cartoon intro's on YouTube. The animation on Thundercats is still as good as any of today's modern toons. Batfink though still puts a grin on my face:

Smurfs
Fraggle Rock (not really a cartoon, but i watched it when I watched the rest)
TMNT (The guy who created them lived about 2 blocks from me)
Toxic Avengers
Transformers

That was pretty much all the cartoons I watched when I was a kid. My favorites still include Thundercats, TMNT, and the Toxic Avengers.
