Random iPod jailbreaking question

I don't know if this is the right place to post this question, but I figure the quickstop audience must be pretty knowledgable when it comes to tech stuff. I've got a windows formatted iPod touch 2g that I want to jailbreak eventually, but I'm going to get a mac soon, so I will have to reformat it. Should I jailbreak my iPod before or after I reformat it, or does it not matter? Thanks for your input.

Maybe things are different with 2nd gen, but I bought my friend's first gen iPod touch off of him (which he set up using windows), hooked it up to my Mac, and there were no problems. I could even add music to it. Of course, I ended up having to wipe it clean so it could be authorized with my account, but that shouldn't be a problem if you authorize the same iTunes account on your new mac.

Call me special or just slow when it comes to technology but what does it mean to jailbreak an IPod?

I searched for it and I found tones of information but nothing that tells me what jail breaking means.
