View Full Version : A modest suggestion

I'm going to break character here and be serious to the extent that I'm able. At least my gist will be. The reason I'm not posting this in the QSE suggestion thread is because I'm appealing to the community for a consensus and not seeking any official policy change regarding the message boards.
There has been some hostility as of late and I've been thinking: How could this have been avoided? It occurred to me that there is a pattern in all of this. It's only after recently scolded noobs declare ignorance of the customs that we make them aware of them. I suggest that we, as a community, develop an FAQ type thingy specific to this board. Something like a stickied 'READ THIS BEFORE POSTING!' thread. It would be something written by the community explaining the standard of etiquette expected of a new member. Again, not official rules, but guidelines maybe. Helpful suggestions. A survival guide for the uninitiated.
If you think it's a reasonable suggestion and have any ideas on what tell a new member to keep them out of trouble, please post them here. I have an idea or two, but I'll have to post them later when I have time.
Ciao babes.

Sorry everybody for seeing my dark side...
Let's not bicker and argue about who killed who.
Seriously, I'm not judging anyone (save the ShamWow guy. What a stooge. It should've been him, Billy!) and certainly don't feel like anyone owes me an apology. I think it was just a misunderstanding. But some people deserve the dark side, Shiffy. Always keep it at the ready. ;)

That particular scuffle is over, but it did get me thinking: How could this have been avoided? It occurred to me that there is a pattern in all of this. ...is something we probably should have done a long time ago.
I don't mind writing up a draft and posting it here to see if anyone would like to make changes to it.
Sound good?

While I do feel you slightly misjudged the situation that occured in that thread I do feel that this...
I've done that sort of thing before, so it's probable. Hell, even likely. Now that you mention it, I should've just posted the FAQ idea and left out the rest. In fact...
I don't mind writing up a draft and posting it here to see if anyone would like to make changes to it.
Sound good?
Sounds smashing!

How To Survive the QSE Forums
1) Good grammar and spelling.
While there is a good mix of ages and nationalities on the forum, the majority of regulars are grown ups. We don't take kindly to "txt tlk" or just plain lazy typing. Please pay us the respect of communicating in an adult fashion.
2) Don't post needless threads
We appreciate that when you're new to a board the excitement of talking to new people about new things is strong. However, we've been here for years and have most likely had a better conversation about it long ago. So instead of cluttering our screen with new threads please do a search for what you want to talk about and contribute to that already existing thread. If there is no existing thread concerning your topic, then by all means please post a new one in the appropriate section.
3) Lurk, Lurk, Lurk
Some of us are dicks. Some of us are cuddly-wuddly-boogle-bears. Some of us have a sarcastic sense of humour. It sometimes can be easy to confuse which one of us is which. We advise that you read more than you post for a while when you first join as getting to know the place is a good way of avoiding arguments and hurt feelings.
4) No Spam
You made a video that you're proud of, or a website you think is the bomb. Don't make it your first post. If you want to get honest feed back and interest from the members here, then take the time to get to know us first because if you advertise when we don't know you it will only result in us telling you (in no uncertain terms) to get lost.
I'm trying to think of other common issues that come up

Are you referring to me?
If you are, I'll have you know that I've been contributing half a post a day* for the last six years, mister.
If not....well...then..I don't think I have anything to say.

He's a good guy. He owns this place. He's made some fun movies and has a podcast here. Unfortunately, he doesnt post here. Ever. So if you'd like to leave him a message check out the forum he refers to on his show at www.viewaskew.com/theboard.
I think it will be fun to now say
Refer to number 5.

Well it just helps really as they can't claim to be ignorant of our "guidelines" and it also let's us just say in future "read this thread" rather than get into a bitching match

So let it be written, so let it be done. I love it, whether or not people read it they won't be able to claim ignorance (like previously stated).
Also, may want to add that we are not the typical board......we are more like a group of close knit friends.

Excellent!
This is exactly what this place needs. I know that MOST of us who post on here don't actually like the arguments, although I can't deny that I do watch it like car crash tv. This board is a mutual appreciation society, that can be hard to crack into, and I think Posting Standards are a neccessity not to scare people off and to maintain the feng shui that has organically arisen through the years.

See rule #1, bitch. ;)
The more you post the more I heart you.
So far I like the suggestions, Unca could add it to the first post of the 'Newbies - introduce yourself' thread, I think we should keep this thread going for a week or so to get everyone's input (or make changes if we need to).
Should we put something very quick and concise about trolling, internet memes, picture content (like, we are rated R for adult language, adult situations, and brief nudity, except in appropriate threads)?
I would add that you could change #4 to just "SPAM" instead of No Spamming, it's not really moderated rules we are trying to enforce, it's more what posts/thread will receive negative attention, in fact that might be a good way to start out, something about how this general set of social board mores/ethos can help the 'shakey baby deer walking for the first time' poster not get eaten by the wolves that hang about (or just your average board member having a bad day).
Hmmm, there is something else that seems to be missing, just can't seem to think of what it is...

Being a n00b myself, I find these guidelines to be helpful and fair. I've tried not to create any frivolous threads, and the ones I have were only because a search turned up nil.
Here's to getting to know some of you folks better!
