View Full Version : The new flu

Just a moment to spare a thought for those who have fallen victim to and died from the new swine flu. I have a good friend in Mexico and have been in contact with him all day. There's talk of closing all boarders. I wish nothing but good hopes to anyone who may be within the regions and to those who know anyone there. Hopefully the suspected cases around the world are just regular flu.
The possible cases around the world (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&t=p&msa=0&msid=106484775090296685271.0004681a37b713f6b5950&ll=32.639375,-110.390625&spn=15.738151,25.488281&source=embed)

I've been reading about it a little bit. And from what I gather, it's a lot like any other influenza strain. If you have a healthy immune system, there isn't much to worry about, save being sick for a little while.

There was six mild cases found in Canada so far. 4 in Nova Scotia and 2 in B.C. Thinking about this kind of reminds me of how far we've come in medicine and how this flu would have killed probably millions by now if we were living in the 18th Century.

I don't understand why everyone is shitting themselves over this... it's the Fucking FLU. You feel like utter crap for a couple of days and you move on. Take some Tamiflu or Reflenzamenzetina-what-ever-the-hell-its-called and you're good to go. Apparently, you only risk death if, just like with the REGULAR flu, if you have a weakened immune system due to being old, young, or sick with something else. Or if you live in one of those places where healthcare and hygeine are light years beyond what we have in the States, i.e. - Cuba.
Sorry, couldn't help the sarcasm at the end...

A flu is flu yeah. Dangerous to young, elderly and poorly. Trouble is it's mutant flu. Vaccines and antibiotics don't always work. Anything that can kill and spreads is a concern.
I woke up with a nasty headache this morning, but thankfully that's all it was. This sums up the 'hysteria' though.

...antibiotics don't always work.
Flu's (being viral) are not generally treated with antibiotics. They usually just have to run their course. Fluids. Rest. Repeat.
How many people die each year from complications due to regular run-of-the-mill flu?
And too, viruses mutate all the time. The flu bug you catch this year is NOT at all the same as the flu bug you had twenty years ago, or even last year...
People are acting like this is Captain Trips...

People are scared because people are dying. Ain't just a regular flu that Theraflu is going to make go away. I think that the thing that is concerning everyone is that the people that have died from this flu are 20-40 years old (opposite of the typical children/elderly that usually succumb to the flu). But that may be me spreading more misinformation...
But yea, mass media/twitter/bloggers etc. have definitely helped hop up the mass hysteria about this. I think that people should be focusing their paranoia back on shark attacks, far more people have died in the mouths of sharks than the swine flu.

In America, Canada, Europe and other developed nations, yes. But in third world countries...it pretty much runs over everyone. I'm pretty sure that the people in the "prime of life" demo that are dying are not poster children for health and fitness.

Oh, and swine flu broke out in china in 2007. It didn't get coverage. why? Because china didn't want it to get coverage. How do you like them apples? course if you live in mainland china; you really don't know what's going to kill you; there's so much to choose from. Pollution, fake food, poisoned food, disease, poisoned medicine to cure the poisoning, natural disaster, man made disaster, pollution again, government "intervention" or the school next to your house explodes because the elementary school kids were making fireworks (http://users.skynet.be/astrologiearchief/pyrotech.htm) to pay for their books, and your building was so poorly built that it and the other 20 around it fall like a deck of cards. I've seen a bus split in two by a hauler truck and body parts strewn across the street like confetti......while riding a bus going in the other direction. You have better odds of dying a thousand different ways than flu of any kind.
I think flu is brought up every time we need to look in the other direction when something else much worse is going on. I wouldn't be suprised if some major tax hike was coming our way; or some major fiscal fiasco.

You beat me to the punch. I was going to say; every administration says that about the last administration. Reagan blamed Carter for everything. It really doesn't matter who is in office. A politician is a politician. and administration is just a bunch of power hungry people proping up someone while they spend your tax dollars. Obama has just as many filthy little shits running around behind him as Bush did. He can't avoid it.
Look up politician in a dictionary and they'd show a picture of Teddy Kennedy; a drunk womanizer. Look up 'most successful' politicians in an encyclopedia and there would be a picture of Hitler.
p.s. I think Teddy gave the Obama's a portugeuse water dog because they shed and slobber and take giant dumps. That dog is going to be a pain in the ass. Just like his time in office (whether it be 4 or 8). He's screwed. He couldn't have been handed a more devestated country short of a "Fallout 3" scenario.

To be fair, I think the government is taking more of the 'calm the fuck down' route while the media is in full on Armageddon mode. Though I think the media absolutely wants something new and fresh to talk about, because the economy talk is getting stale. Something is only a crisis as long as the American public will watch breaking news about it. Lou Dobbs and Anderson Cooper don't care about the economy, they just want to yell about the hot issue, and right now it's people wigging out over this stuff, so they switch their tune.
All I'm waiting for is Jim Carrey's next 'vaccines cause autism!' article about this.

Lol well I can't speak for the US but the UK has had slipping hygiene standards since the Victorian age, we avoid thousands of deaths for one reason only, truckloads of cash.
There are just five confirmed cases in the UK and some of the steps we're able to take? Just casually increasing our anti-viral stockpiles from 35million to 50million.
Just to put it in perspective Mexico's annual budget for universal health services is about 5 billion dollars, servicing around 109million people.
The UK's NHS has an annual budget of about 110billion pounds... for about 61 million people.
Don't get me wrong, I hear the argument that in a genuine pandemic case perhaps its necessary to be every country for itself, but wouldn't flying over the UK's extra 15million anti-viral doses planned, over to Mexico, actually be more effective in helping everyone?

We're thinking of the same Victorian Age right? The Victorian Age where people wore white makeup and often added a brown or black "mole" dot. heh okay, I was really just thinking of hospitals, which in those days were scrubbed fucking spotless (well probably only the well to do ones again) cos I was responding to the thousands that die in poorer countries from complications from simple diseases. We don't have more die from complications in the US/UK because of brushing our teeth every day, or from any other hygiene practice, we don't have them cos we have the drugs money and infrastructure to minimise them, simple.
All I was trying to point out was its not happening in Mexico just because those "dirty buggers don't wash their hands enough". Or that the US/Uk is all gravy cos "we practice good health and good hygiene", like feck we do, but you can always do it a bit better with more money

But that's not despite what I think, I make no assumptions about the state of Mexico cos I've never been there, and your not the first person to tell me it really is a shithole, including many Mexicans. But thats just what I was saying, just cos its true doesn't stop it being a racial stereotype and its always dangerous to attribute a racial stereotype as the cause of anything, which is not to say you can't but you've just gotta be careful about it and have good reasons backing you up in order not to sound just a touch racist. And I repeat, the higher deaths due to complications has almost bugger all to do with hygiene practices and everything to do with money. The corruption stereotype in fact would've been a much more compelling criticism to level at Mexico, but the budget numbers I listed illustrates even if they were all angels they'd still be having a hard time of it.

But thats just what I was saying, just cos its true doesn't stop it being a racial stereotype
When something is established as truth, rather than a generalized statement based on minority of occurances, it becomes fact. Not a stereotype. Stereotypes are generalizations that may be true. Facts are observations that are proven to be true.
And I repeat, the higher deaths due to complications has almost bugger all to do with hygiene practices and everything to do with money.
That is just not true. Compare the numbers of those who die of the regular flu in industrialized nations. Those who die generally (of course with some outliers) fall into three categories: The very young, the elderly, and those with lowered immune systems.
Throw out lowered immune systems due to cancer treatment and immunodeficiency diseases and what else lowers your immune system? Your body's inability to keep up with the barrage of the virus attacking it. The simple practice of good hygiene (not excessive hygiene, as that has its own set of disadvantages in regards to the immune system) gives your immune system a leg up and in some cases is the major barrier between you...and disease.
The main difference between an argument and a discussion is that arguments are a battle of opinions, discussions are a comparison of facts. Talk about what you feel and think less, and the facts that you know more.

Wow, this escalated very quickly. Now if someone could toss in a Cheech and Chong reference I would say we have most mexican sterotypes spoken for.
I would still like to know more about this flu. There's 13 confirmed cases in Canada now. 3 in BC, 4 in Nova Scotia, 4 in Ontario, and 2 in Alberta. Still no deaths though.
Interestingly the samples are being tested in Winnipeg, and in Ontario they are developing a newer testing method that should be able to detect swine flu within two days and possibly a day.
Lets put this topic back on track.

I'm and the majority of response authorities are saying you should get yourself tested. They need to figure out how quickly this virus is spreading, how it is being transmitted to have efficient methods of slowing the spread and for applying aid where's it's needed the most.
That's how it works in a perfect society anyways.

Having a disagreement on the hygiene of a poor country is not anything to sound racist about. Hell, I work with a shit ton of Mexicans and they are all glad to be out and have told me never to go because it is poor, filthy and violent.
It's not like we are saying the deaths are because "the spics" are filthy. But cultural standards are different. That is just the way things are. I used to work for a restaurant that got fined because the largely Mexican staff did not wash their hands after using the restroom. Ick.
Now, go ahead and paint me out to be the horrible racist pig that I am. And I'll just go cry on the shoulders of my buddies Patricio and Jose'

Of course, that's the old fashioned boring kind of flu. This swine flu thing probably won't break into double digits.

Eh, Mexico is dirty, been there. Relating the hygiene of a nation to the outbreak of flu? Borderline doesn't seem to sit right with me. I mean, if the regular flu kills how many more than this swine flu, what does that have to do with it. Then again, I do watch what I eat and drink when in Mexico (and I am very open to my eating habits when traveling). Ok, I'll stop senselessly rambling.
All that aside, I have been reading about some people's views that it is just another reason to complete the Mexican/American boarder wall and shut the Mexican's out. I mean, it's one thing that they come and take the jobs that nobody want's but now they are trying to make us sick too?!?! </sarcasm>
There's a reason we used to have places like Ellis Island. And there's a reason for border check points. The swine flu is a good example of that reason. Not to mention the explosion of bed bugs, measles, and a number of other diseases and critters we had at one time erradicated from this country...

Okaaaay here goes, you can tell I didn't wanna get any work done today :p anyone who doesn't give a fig about this discussion should ignore this post an move on:
Having a disagreement on the hygiene of a poor country is not anything to sound racist about. Hell, I work with a shit ton of Mexicans and they are all glad to be out and have told me never to go because it is poor, filthy and violent.
I think that's where most people got me wrong, I was never saying "hey look you can't call Mexico dirty" I was saying "you can't pull up a stereotype, true or otherwise without some connection". I was agreeing, that by all accounts Mexico is one dirty shithole.
When something is established as truth, rather than a generalized statement based on a minority of occurrences, it becomes fact. Not a stereotype. Stereotypes are generalizations that may be true. Facts are observations that are proven to be true.
A generalised statement can be true, in the sense that it holds for the majority of cases, it just has to be remembered that it is still a generalisation. The may be true of stereotypes can be established one way or the other based on empirical evidence. In normal language we take generalised statements that apply to the majority of cases to be true, and generalised statements that apply to only a minority of cases to be false. That's the process of generalising/averaging/stereotyping whatever you want to call it. This is a difficulty for genuine racial equality because whilst most reasonable minded people have come to accept that patently false racial stereotypes are damaging and derogative, they fail to see the subtle racism at work with either positive stereotypes, or stereotypes that generally actually hold to be true.
Good hygiene does not strengthen your immune system at all, it simply removes the risk of some infection. The hardiest buggers are those who get infected by things the most. In some cases it is the major barrier between you and disease, but I was talking about deaths from complications not complications arising themselves. People in the UK/USA can still get pneumonia or something like that from the flu, but you have a tremendously better chance of surviving it with superior medication and healthcare professionals, at that stage, the cleanliness of your hospital or how much you wash your hands has bugger all to do with your survival.
Now you can argue that countries with more complications, are raising their percentage of deaths even if they had the best meds and best doctors but that aint what I was talking about.
It's science.
Where are most of the deaths? Where are most of the deaths with the swine flu. Drawing correlation does not mean causation, but it is a logical place to begin examining truth.
You cannot argue scientific fact. Better hygiene = better health. Broken record, yes. Incorrect fact, no.
Heh if you can't argue scientific fact that puts a lot of scientists out of a job. Half of what science is is arguing against and proving otherwise things we previously took to be 'fact'.
My whole original point was not that you can't say such and such about mexicans or mexico, but that the correlation was false, unsupported and thereby could be construed as a conclusion drawn purely from racist sentiment.
Swine flu broke out presumably in the same way bird flu did, with people living in close quarters with animals. Although that often goes along with poor hygiene its not a necessary or even sufficient condition for poor hygiene, animals can be surprisingly clean and so can people living close to them. And why has it spread most effectively across Mexico? Perhaps hygiene is a factor, but the much more establishable and non-generalised facts about mexico is theres a crap load of people living in very close quarters, with a feckless government not advising its people or reaching the infected in time. Just look at the over-reaction the UK and USA have had. We're doing better and will continue to do better not cos we wash our freakin hands every day but because we're rich, organised hypochondriacs with governments that respond to (or create themselves?) demands.
The Mexican government can't even decide how many have died for christs sake, ("I dunno ese, mebbe 19 mebbe 101, I lost count, I'm jus so sleepy" Theeeres ya good old-fashioned racism )
and its factors such as that, which are not generalisations, that hold considerably more strength as correlations than anything you can say about hygiene standards.

I think that was a case where what you "said" and what you "meant" being two completely different things.
Any statement is technically a generalization. There are outliers in any variable set. Arguing the merit of the word "generalization" itself is a final desperate throw in the death struggle of an argument.
Good hygiene does not strengthen your immune system at all, it simply removes the risk of some infection.
That is a factually incorrect statement. Completely. I reitterate: If your immune system is forced to battle the onslaught of every critter trying its damnedest to get in, eventually it will tire and be unable to protect itself. Good hygiene eliminates threats while they are ON your body, before they get IN your body.
Now you can argue that countries with more complications, are raising their percentage of deaths even if they had the best meds and best doctors but that aint what I was talking about.
It may not be what YOU were talking about...but it kind of gives weight to everyone else's argument...so I could see why you wouldn't want it to factor in to the debate.
Heh if you can't argue scientific fact that puts a lot of scientists out of a job. Half of what science is is arguing against and proving otherwise things we previously took to be 'fact'.
We're not arguing flat earth vs globular earth here. We're arguing whether or not soap kills things that can make you sick. And again...yes...it does.
My whole original point was not that you can't say such and such about mexicans or mexico, but that the correlation was false, unsupported and thereby could be construed as a conclusion drawn purely from racist sentiment.
It is neither. Just because you don't believe it, don't make it untrue.
Swine flu broke out presumably in the same way bird flu did, with people living in close quarters with animals. Although that often goes along with poor hygiene its not a necessary or even sufficient condition for poor hygiene, animals can be surprisingly clean and so can people living close to them. Riddle me this. If the close contact to livestock is your main corollary, then why is H1N1 not running RAMPANT in Iowa...the state that produces the majority of pork in the United States? So far the only confirmed case was a woman that had traveled to Mexico. And why is the common advice from all agencies to practice good hygiene to prevent the spread of the disease? You're continuing to argue beliefs...not facts. It's becoming a circular debate now...and thus...unproductive.

Uh, so I guess the media is freaking the fuck out about the swine flu because one time it reared it's ugly head it was pretty bad, back then they just called it the Spanish flu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu) (feckin racist bastards, though check out why it got that name). I guess now they are worried that it could somehow mutate with the HIV virus and that would be pretty damn hard to battle with our current medical toolbag (or that's what I gather (http://www.upi.com/news/issueoftheday/2009/05/04/Swine-flu-HIV-could-devastate-human-race/UPI-43071241461493/)). Basically they are already preparing for the second wave of the diesese, we don't have the same driving factors to make the virus as bad but it seems that it could come back in a much worse fashion.
Interesting, didn't even know that happened and killed a lot of people, sorry if your already aware that this happened. Kinda scary that they are messing around with the virus still, makes you wonder if someone got a little sloppy and released it by accident, a la 'Outbreak' style.

During flu season, when the regular ol' seasonal flu bug is going around, 250 people die from complications related to seasonal flu EACH DAY. On average, some 360,000 people a year. Why isn't everyone going ape shit over regular flu which is MORE DEADLY?

Appreciate that little window on China dtcb, I think its important to know. That link seems to lead to a dubious "explosions linked with astrology" page but I've no reason not to believe what you say.
Unfortunately I hate being right. It's why I drink alot.
Here's an official article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/1206665.stm)not nearly as bizarre as astrology. And like cockroaches, for every one you see; there are 10 behind the wall. in this case literally "The Great Wall." China, unlike the US, does not like to air out its dirty laundry. They throw journalists and 'dissenters' in jail every day (course, not before they beat the shit out of them (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/5199325/Chinese-police-training-manual-offers-tips-on-the-best-way-to-beat-up-offenders.html)). It is very rare that stories like this get out. They've done much better at wrenching down the internet since this came out.
Swine flu, bird flu, whatever; even the friggin black plague (http://www.annals.org/cgi/content/full/122/2/151)has made a comeback in third world places. And I've been to too many and seen why all the great diseases make a comeback. Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa, Philippines, India, Pakistan. I've been to places where toilet paper is a luxury. there are still places in this world were people wipe their ass with their left hand. Not because they want to, because they have no choice (which is what JK was stating). I've seen human shit on the ground with featherless diseased chickens pecking at it while kids play in garbage heaps. And I've seen human shit used as fertilizer for crops. I've been to towns with open sewers, no electricity and no running water except a river (that probably has a few towns upstream using it as a sewer) and all next to a tanning factory and a plastics manufacturer.
And the only thing that suprises me is that more of these diseases are not spreading "to the real world" from the back alleys of 'the invisible people.' After all, they are probably mopping the floor of some starbucks in the city before treking home to their shack-o-squaller.
Oh, and I've seen lepers. Leprosy is still around. hoofucking-ray!
............... I think I need a drink.

Stand By Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMOw0Ym496k) was hobbit gay. It was "BrokeBackByMe."
Watch the movie again....if you can bare to. And while you are watching, imagine a girl being put in Gordie's place. Picture all the Chris-Gordie-scenes with a girl in Gordie's place and you will see the romance.
The only thing missing is Chris telling Gordie: "I wish I knew how to quit you!"

But you guys have nothing to worry, the virus does not spread via thread.

And the CDC finally came out with the information that I've been pushing for a couple weeks now...it's no more dangerous than the common flu. So...it's a non-issue. Thread. Dead.

Breaking News: Kermit the frog has died from the swine flu. His last words were: "That fucking bitch told me she was clean"
:D
So I spoke with a friend who works for the local school district as a nurse. The CDC is not so much worried about this strain that is going around as they are about the next strain (when this strain mutates) which should be around in the August timeframe (school back in). Apparently the current strain affects young healthy immune systems more efficiently and the people who carry the disease can infect other people for a lot longer (like 10 days instead of 2-3). So they are trying to limit the ways this strain can spread and further mutate.
I told her that the way the current news is reporting doesn't mention most of this information and by the time the next strain comes out people are going to be so sick of hearing about the 'new flu' that they will likely ignore any important information. Boy who cried wolf and all.
I hate you dtcb.
With all my heart.
This seems to be the common passion I instill in relationships. A kind of "heartfelt hatred."
Still, I mark this as "love/hate" relationship. At least right up until I sent the next care package. ;) (actually, i promise the next care package will be less vile, I've found some good things to send)
