Alright, I was flipping through the channels and I came across the VH1 show The Top 40 Metal Songs. Here is the list they came up with.

#40-Breaking the Law-Judas Priest
#39-I'm Eighteen-Alice Cooper
#38-Balls to the Wall-Accept
#37-Smoke on the Water-Deep Purple
#36-Wait and Bleed-Slipknot
#35-Metal Health-Quiet Riot
#34-Paranoid-Black Sabbath
#33-High 'N' Dry (Saturday Night)-Def Leppard
#32-Thunder Kiss '65-White Zombie
#31-Rock You Like a Hurricane-Scorpions
#30-Epic-Faith No More
#29-Caught in a Mosh-Anthrax
#28-The Beautiful People-Marilyn Manson
#27-Run to the Hills-Iron Maiden
#26-Refuse/Resist-Sepultura
#25-Cowboys from Hell-Pantera
#24-Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap-AC/DC
#23-Freak on a Leash-Korn
#22-Enter Sandman-Metallica
#21-Paradise City-Guns N' Roses
#20-I Wanna Rock-Twisted Sister
#19-Man in the Box-Alice in Chains
#18-Slave to the Grind-Skid Row
#17-Live Wire [Kick A** '91 Remix]-Mötley Crüe
#16-Walk-Pantera
#15-Bulls on Parade-Rage Against the Machine
#14-Toxicity-System of a Down
#13-Rainbow in the Dark-Dio
#12-Bring the Noise-Anthrax
#11-Peace Sells-Megadeth
#10-Ace of Spades-Motörhead
#9-Crazy Train-Ozzy Osbourne
#8-Raining Blood-Slayer
#7-The Number of the Beast-Iron Maiden
#6-Detroit Rock City-Kiss
#5-You've Got Another Thing Comin'-Judas Priest
#4-Back in Black-AC/DC
#3-Master of Puppets-Metallica
#2-Welcome to the Jungle-Guns N' Roses
#1-Iron Man-Black Sabbath

There are a lot of good songs on this list, but there is also crap on this list. I like System of a down, but I do not think that that song deserves to be higher than classics like Walk and Thunder Kiss '65. Also, there are a few band on the list that I didn't know even fell into the Metal category, like Korn. I could understand if you put a song like Ball Tongue on the list, but Freak on a Leash? Come on.
What does everyone else think?

It's all just very obvious stuff, then again it is VH1

Yeah, that is the first thing wrong with the list, VH1 came up with it.

#9-Crazy Train-Ozzy Osbourne
#6-Detroit Rock City-Kiss
#2-Welcome to the Jungle-Guns N' Roses

These are the songs I would have left off the list. Some of them are personal taste, aka, Rock you like a Hurricane (I just hate that song), and some are because they are not metal, I am looking at you, Kiss and Guns N' Roses. I know many might disagree, but as a lifelong metal fan, I just can't grok with this list.

I agree with you on all but Marilyn Manson, but I am a fan and I love the Antichrist Superstar album.
Just off the top of my head here are a few bands that have songs that could have made the list: Misfits, Danzig, Deftones, Corrosion of Conformity, Down, Any of Zakk Wylde's Bands, NIN(I understand why people would say no), Sevendust, Static-X, and the list can keep going.

I hate everything VH1 has done about metal, with the notable exception of Metal: A Headbanger's Journey.

Since MTV has turned into RealityTelevision, I will even watch the shows VH1 puts out on Metal.

I've covered 26 of those tunes in various bands I've been in. And, seen all but two of the bands in person.

#22-Enter Sandman-Metallica

I love Metallica, but it pisses me off that this is usually the only song people think of when they hear about Metallica. There are such better songs than "Enter Sandman" such as "Fade to Black," "Harvester of Sorrow," "Battery," "Creeping Death" and the list goes on.

After the two Thanksgiving dinners I've had the last two days, there's no room for the cookie. As for the booze,....don't mind if I do. ;)

In my opinion, almost any song that they put out before the Black album is better than that song.

Hey man, thats cool. I like the new album, I know it will never be as good as the old stuff, but for as old as they are, they are going strong.

Don't get me wrong, I used to love them. I just kinda moved on to heavier stuff.

I for the most part listen to heavier stuff, one of my current favorites is Scar Symmetry.

What he said... My favorite Judas Priest (Hellrider) song isn't on there. But that's cool because RATM is.

But my FAVORITE would be Motorbreath.

That list bites koala balls (which is just cruel). Half the bands on it aren't metal. Half of what's left is shite. And of the rest, half of the songs are the pop songs of the bands, not their standout metal fist in the air tracks. The remainder I agree with:D.

Iron Man no.1? Not in my book, I understand the role that Sabbath played and I love them but, I wouldn't even say this was their best song nevermind the no.1 metal song.

No Zeppelin. Thoughts?

Encyclopaedia Metallum (http://www.metal-archives.com/)

If a band ain't on there, they ain't metal.

Although there are a few questionable listings. (http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=1206)

They try to weed out the nu-metal as most metal fans are really elitist. But for the most part it's a good source.

They are more metal than the pop rock band known as Def Leppard.

See, bands like Deftones have done more for metal than a lot of the other bands that are on that site. Plus, you can argue if they even fall into the nu metal category.

Neither band should be on the list.

Neither band should be on the list.

That's my point exactly! If this top 40 is the benchmark used, which includes everything from pop rock to nu-metal, they should be included. I mean there are great bands on this list which don't fall into the 'real' category of metal, e.g. the perennial rock band AC/DC. I reckon that the only reason they aren't on it is that Zeppelin (rightly) didn't allow the station to include them, as they do with so many things.

I wouldn't see any controversy, or think of a conspiracy theory, of the absence of the Zep if this were a stalwart chart of metal. However, this is not a chart that would have been developed by metal purists. Rather this is a chart that VH1 developed to show off their videos!

Three Iron Maiden songs but no Wicker Man. Also, I like Korn but I wouldn't call them metal. How can you have any kind of metal list without Tool, Opeth or GWAR?

I watched a bit of that VH1 special. First warning sign; it was hosted by Sebastian Bach. That fucktward.

It has no legs to stand on and was utter crap. A few bands were definitely not metal and the order is so disputable it begs to wonder how they friggy-dig they made it. Probably a list and a dart board.
