It's about time I thought that us football lovers had a place to talk about this. Especially since the euro-championship is underway.

So... yeah... how much did Cech fuck last night, huh? Am I right?

Oh and here are the fixtures for the Premierleague's first day next season (http://www.premierleague.com/page/FixturesResults/0,,12306,00.html)

P.S.
Could all our North American friends please refrain from making namby-pamby comments about how much you prefer to wear helmets.

I haven't been watching every game, but I'll go for Portugal or the Dutch. Van Nistelrooy is looking pretty sharp...as is the rest of the team (Does Chelsea still own Boulahrouz?)

And did you mean suck, instead of f**k?

I actually meant to write "fuck up" but the result is pretty funny.

And I too am rooting for the Dutch.
Plus, if they win Van Der Sar will be one of the very few people who have won the Champions league and European Championship in the same year.

A couple of weeks ago I watched part of the England-US game. The last I saw of said game I think England was up 2-0. I don't have cable or I would probably watch soccer. I think its awesome how teams are so good that scoring one goal is amazing. Its not like 10 year-old soccer where both teams have 20 points.

I played from 5 years old till middle of high school. I was always on some of the worst teams, I really don't remember many wins, but it was usually a good time. Oddly enough my old soccer coach was this funny Indian guy named Deepak Chopra, no relation to the name I see on books and self help guides everywhere (http://www.chopra.com/aboutdeepak).

Now that ESPN 2 carries the Premiere and various Euro leagues, I've been catching some of the games, although that's nothing compared to my old man who still records every game available on a VCR that's had its recording head worn down to a metallic nub (to date this will be the third VCR that's been killed by constant soccer recording. Every christmas I bat around the idea of getting him a DVR, but I can see that thing lighting on fire after a year).

Yeah, that's basically what it added up to. The funny thing is that the younger the teams were, the crazier the parents got. Sure, a high school game can get heated, but if a bunch of 8 year olds were playing, their parents were screaming for blood.

Been a fan since I was about 4...none of this "oooh my team is that big team from miles away who wins all it's games" pish either :), when we win a cup/league it's extra special.

Fuck it...when we avoid promotion it is extra special...as was with the last game of the season last year.

On equal points with Clyde and 1 goal better on goal difference going into the last game. We had to equal their result to avoid the dreaded 9th place play-off spot.

I think the reactions for our goals say it all;

Germany just ripped your new manager's old team a new one.

Man Utd could by David Villa, Benzema, Ribery, and Messi. Then life would rule!

Real Madrid are welcome to him, although will they still want him?

Well, United this morning reiterated he's not for sale, but after the defeat last night Ronaldo said:

'"It is a dream, a step forward, you can call it what you want. For me it is a great opportunity, and as (Luiz Felipe) Scolari says, that train passes by only once, and we have to take advantage of it.

"You will soon know what I want. You do know what I want and that is why I don't want to say anything else. Let's wait. I want to give more details that is why I cannot say much more."

If he wants to go, will Utd dig their heels in, slam him in the reserves until Madrid make an appropiate offer, or just offload him straight away and be done with it?

If they're smart they'll sell him.

He's not the player the press make him out to be, and it would be better if they got rid of him before the interested parties catch on.

I was being a lazy bum on the couch and caught the last 15 minutes of regular time up to the PK's.

It was pretty fun to watch, I think that the announcer made it that much more fun. I don't know where he is from but he starts cussing out bad plays or dumb decisions, hilarious, I will catch a few more if he is on.

I did play indoor soccer for a while, I appreciate how hard the sport can be. I just don't like how the sport seems to encourage players taking dives (especially when some of the contact that happens can be quite brutal but doesn't get called).

Honestly, I think it is a natural reaction to how the rules are written and called.

Look in youtube for soccer dives and hundreds of (non) hits will come up. Look for the same in American football or baseball or hockey. Basketball may produce a few, but the stakes aren't as high where a single goal can win a game. I think that the players understand this and use them to their advantage.

Aaron
06-25-2008, 01:15 PM
American football and hockey are both contact sports, so you can't use them in your arguement.

Basketball isn't though and people "draw fouls" in that which is a very similar concept to diving in the idea that they're looking to get a foul called against their opponents in order to have a better chance of scoring.
Does that get as much derision from fans?

Does that get as much derision from fans?We call it "flopping" over here. And, it's not cared for, so much, but tolerated. But, I agree with Sheriff, when each team is scoring close to 100 points a game, it's not got a possibility of deciding the outcome of the game. Most refs swallow their whistles near the end of the game, and let the teams duke it out.

If the game is tight, and it's close to the end, and you've got a time out. Yes, it can decide a game.

But as you said refs know the difference and it's the same with soccer, 9 times out of 10, they know when a player is diving and therefore don't call a foul.

Sheriff

I don't know if you can consider soccer a 'non-contact' sport. I'm thinking Golf, Bowling, Darts, Tennis, etc. Where there is no chance of physical encounter (or at least if there is, it is probably a immediate forfeiture).

Soccer has contact in it. Probably as much as Basketball so I agree, it is a good one to base the argument on. If it is a big game, the refs do let them play it out a bit more, and of course the refs are much closer to the action to be able to call it. Is there offensive penalties that get called in Soccer? Like if an offensive player just runs over some defender, can they give a PK to that team? Not in a red card case? (uneducated American's I know).

Yeah, you can get called for barging or obstruction of the ball.
Fouls get called for it but the punishment is rarely severe and rarely happens in a penalty box.

More often than not though it can depend on the ref that you get.
Some came be very strict on the rules and others can turn a blind eye to everything thats not life threatening.
All part of the fun :D

I think that is the balancing act for basketball, fouls can be committed by either offense of defense with the same result (free throws).

In soccer the defense plays to a big disadvantage and thus the offense tries to draw the penalty so often. Anywhoo, good discussion.

Fair dues, if its a family thing, but i think to experience a football game properly, you need to go to games. Which is hard to so if you are a glory hunter, which too many 'fans' are.

I will watch most football, but you can't beat being at a game.

The first team I went to see was Cowdenbeath a third division side, and they were part-timers. You could get in free at half time, but the players were still as passionate as any you will see earning the millions in the Premiership. Then went to a proper game, watching Dunfermline in their all-seated stadium, though still small and in Div 1. I think its because i do follow small local teams and not one of the Rangers/ Celtic divide, I have a different appreciation than what they do.

I agree, and if I could go to more United games I would. I have seen them play three times at Old Trafford though, and I got to see Cantona play. It took all three for me to finally see them win though, just my luck.

Amazing experiences, all of them.

Inverness (Caley we call 'em) are high flying in the SPL. They look pretty safe there too. County got relegated to Div 2 but went straight back up.

If County lose tomorrow then they've lost their first 3 games and could be in a world of trouble come Christmas. My dad was over watching them last fortnight, and his exact word was 'rubbish'. He used to play for them so he could be just a little disillusioned.

Read again today that Spurs may sell Berbatov to Barca just so we can't have him, which is brilliant. If Barca buy another striker, Henry should be much easier to get.

It wasn't Brown's fault. Van Der Sar was the one who fucked up royally. Neutering Rooney by playing him wide on the right didn't help either. Did Ferguson not see how well he played for England in his favoured position during the week?

Miguel Sanchez
09-13-2008, 10:25 AM
Of course it was Brown's fault. A defender should never stand that close when it's a Keeper's ball.

The only other choices are Fletcher and Nani, neither of whom are appealing to see on the team-sheet. He should have switched to a straight 4-4-2 at the start of the second half.

I can't recall the commentator on the Sky Sports coverage, but he kept calling (as I heard it) Garrido, Greedo. I really wanted him to make a sly 'he shot first' reference.

I did indeed. I also watched Chelsea get stuffed by Arsenal. :D

I didn't notice the Greedo thing though.

However, Arsenal's young'uns did recieve a hell of a beating from the mighty Burnley.

If Burnley were a player, it'd most certainly be Darren Fletcher.
Not to be confused with:

Anyone else intrigued by how much Man City are going to spend in this transfer window.

Wayne Bridge has been given permission to talk to them. 12 million, I've read. Shame. I preferred him to Ashley Cole.

I don't think thats a great buy for City to be honest. I think he's an average player.
Time will tell...

United just bought two Serbian midfielders.

Wenger, again, didn't see Eboue's second foul for his red card. Dispite the foul being near to the touchline. The guy makes me laugh with his silly denials.

I preferred to call it "a blooming obvious kick out at another player".

Excellent game, I don't watch much live fitba on the TV but I was in the pub and it was on.

Christiano Ronaldo to sign for Real Madrid (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/apr/03/cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid-transfer) in summer. For £75m.

At least, that's the rumour. Though the Real boss seems to think it's a done deal and Ferguson hasn't denied it, so it looks pretty legit.

I for one won't be sad to see the preening, pouting, tantrum prone boy-man go. But then, I'm a Liverpool fan, so anything that weakens the Scum is fine by me.

I'm so bored of this.
That rumour has been floating around with different price tags since last year.
It's being spread by Real and has been constantly done so in order to swing some favour with their very shit fans and hopefully make the poncy Portuguese dick think about it.

It's lame and was lame the first time they tried it.

New story please.

Erasmus Cunk
04-04-2009, 07:12 PM
Well, it's not really about tempting Ronaldo though. He himself has said that Real is the team he wants to play for. If he had his way he would have gone last year but United refused to let him go.

It seems pretty certain that Ronaldo wants to go, but Ferguson's feelings are another matter.

If we beat Partick Thistle on Saturday we go 2nd in the Irn Bru Scottish First Division.

Will be our highest placing in well over a decade.

After dropping from the 1st, to the 2nd then 3rd in 2 seasons - then coming back up to the 2nd for many years - and finally returning to the first (although staying in by a midgies baw hair last year) it is a nice feeling.

Should be a big crowd on Saturday - and by that I mean about 3500. But this is REAL fitba dammit! Standing up and everything!
