Ahem...sends a slow underhanded pitch down the middle of plate to RB... Kill Bill in 2 Parts (http://www.moviepoopshoot.com/news/july03/76.html)

Evidently, the finished cut had a running time of about 3 hours (well, duh...The screenplay was 200+ pages). Miramax felt that it was too long (apparently they subscribe to the Hitchcock theory; no longer than the average human can hold their bladder), but also felt that nothing could be eliminated without destroying the film. The new solution in play, is that they are going to split it into two parts and release them 2-6 months apart, the first part to be released on the original release date. Here's the Studio Briefing Item:

Two Movies for the Price of One
16 July 2003 (StudioBriefing)

Instead of releasing Quentin Tarantino's latest film Kill Bill, starring Uma Thurman, in its current three-hour-plus length or asking the director to cut it, Miramax is now planning to release it in two parts, published reports said today (Wednesday). The first part is due to be released on Oct. 10. Daily Variety commented: "Cutting Kill Bill into two seems to be an elegant solution since Tarantino gets to release all of his three-hour pic, while (Harvey) Weinstein gets a 90-minute movie (albeit two of them)." Today's New York Times pointed out that the story is told in chapters and therefore lends itself to a serial approach. "I've always designed the movie, thought about the film, as malleable in any number of versions," Tarantino told the newspaper in a statement. He suggested that there may be different versions for Asia and Europe.

Is the buzz about this movie really that good? I don't hear any of the other fat kids on my block talking about it. I was really hoping to see the WHOLE movie the first time.

I don't profess to have my finger on the pulse of the buzz (that reads funny, but c'est la vie) but from what I saw on the set, and depending on what one finds interesting, it's sort of an art house movie that's very, very bent. Think...chick with a MAJOR gripe over workplace violence is wounded, remains in coma for five years, only to wake up with the worst case of PMS/revenge-driven angst in history and bloodletting ensues...That type of flick.

Agreed on Omaru's point. It's silly that so many movies around this length have done well and yet they are splitting this up. I really can't help thinking the powers that be are pushing for this so they can get box office return out of two movies instead of one.

Sorry Karma, but that sounds a little far fetched. People in Hollywood don't do things for money, they are all about the art of filmmaking.
