Mefisto in Onyx by Harlan Ellison

http://img1.fantasticfiction.co.uk/images/c0/c2066.jpg

This was my first ever Ellison read. I figured after years of seeing him bitch on the Sci Fi Channel (anybody besides me remember that?), and his work with Babylon 5, I owed it to him and myself to read some of his stuff.

I found it was a pretty good story, if not a little predictable. I also find it a little uncomfortable when someone of one race tries to write from the perspective of another (white man writing from a black man's perspective). Other than that, I found it to be good enough to read more of his writing.

Just started Angry Candy today, and it seems to be pretty morose stuff so far, but he kind of warns you of that in the foreward (the main focus of the stories center around death).

Just finished this and I feel simultaneously miserable and uplifted. The feeling reminds me of a Darren Aronofsky film: After I experience it, I love it, but I never want to experience it again. Really, really good but, God, it'll leave you drained.

Not sure what to follow up this book with. Maybe I'll move on to The Master and Margarita.

The Strain is well worth the read. THIS is the way vampires are supposed to be portrayed, with imagination. Its actually the first vampire story in the past 5 years that I've probably enjoyed the most.

Also, Frankenstein is another book I've nearly finished. Slow in sections, but again an overall good read. Plus it was forced unto me to read it for school.

Just finished The Strain, and it is far and away the best vampire book that I've read in a very long time. Del Toro and Hogan try to approach it from a scientific perspective and do a damn good job. There are a few points where I didn't like the story but it was darn near perfect.

Maybe not as good as "Old Man's War", but still really well written and interesting.
OK, all the alien characters who have a personality are slightly too human, but then again it is written from a human point of view, so it can be expected that the narrator, even though omniscient, will consider noteworthy only the aspects that s/he can recognise... or am I reading too much in it?

Anansi Boys is just as tome-ish as American Gods and, as a sort of sequel, its better to read American Gods first.

As much as they are intended for children, Coraline and The Graveyard Book are both great reads.

Sandman is a masterpiece of storytelling. I can't recommend Good Omens enough, which seems right down your alley, Aaron.

I've read them both, and they're not even close. I can't remember the exact page count of my copies, but they are stated as 352 (http://www.amazon.com/Anansi-Boys-Novel-Neil-Gaiman/dp/006051518X) and 624 (http://www.amazon.com/American-Gods-Novel-Neil-Gaiman/dp/0060558121/ref=pd_sim_b_1) pages, respectively, on Amazon. I don't know if those pages are the same size in both editions, and I'm sure one could find ones with higher and lower numbers for both, but there is a sizable difference between the two. Also, they're not really sequels; the two stories have little or nothing to do with each other.

Hmm...my copies of both are about the same size. Only about 100 pages difference.

But even so, they both take place in the same universe. I read Anansi Boys first and found a bit of it easier to understand after I read American Gods. Maybe its just me.

It is OK. A bit messy, in the first half of the book there are too many characters thrown in pretty much art random, too many "side stories". In the last third of the novel she tries to bring all those subplots together, most of them successfully, in a satisfying tight rhythm.

...it is OK.

More serious brain-candy from the Wolfeman.

At first glance it's a sf book about clones, aborigines, and colonialism (where humanity is the lesser species). The trouble is you can go through an entire Wolfe book thinking one thing and realize that one single word in the entire paragraph you just read twists the whole thing on it's head.

One of his earlier novels starts out with typical swords and fantasy stuff, only for lasers and teleporters to appear and you realize the whole time they were in a spaceship. He just loves to have 'unreliable' narrators in his book.

So yeah tricky writer, but a good one.

Dunno what to say, it never really hit me. It'd been recommended by a few different people, including one person who told me, "You're so lucky, I wish I could read it for the first time all over again." High praise.

F*cking hell, what an extraordinary book.

The main character attempts to write an autiobiography, but decides the only truthful way to do it is through writing a fiction that mirrors his own life and taking the allusions to the real world as fact.

Obviously when he starts believing the fiction more than his own life, he starts to go a little bit mental.

On one hand it's about a man's descent into schizophrenia, but then again maybe we're reading the book within a book that he has written. So what's real and what isn't? Mindbending and brilliant.

I stalled in a big way. I'm still roughly a hundred pages from the end of Clash of Kings. it always happens when I read too much by the same author in one go. I shouldn't have jumped directly to it from Game of Thrones, but I thought the story would be strong enough to get past my weird mental block. I'm starting to get the bug again though, and I started dipping into it again last week.

I read this. It's a fun, short read. I'm a little bummed that the movie looks like it will play up the teen angsty twilight-style love triangle that was only a brief part of the book but I shouldn't be surprised. I'm sure it will down play the child slaughtering violence too. Ce'st la vie.

I finished World War Z last night. Great read. Probably the most realistic portrayal of how the entire world would react to a zombie outbreak. I can't wait for the movie.

I just finished reading Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It was great. Next I will have to watch the movie...though I am a little afraid that it will damage my previous conceptions of the various characters.

In the meantime, for all the other book worms out there, I highly suggest you check out this new site I found:http://frugaldad.com/barnes-and-noble/. After a while, reading a book/week/month can sometimes add up to a pricey hobby. With all of the great coupons and deals going on at Barnes and Noble, you can let your wallet rest at ease!

Enjoy!

I can kind of respect that sort of spamming though. They posted several legit posts over a couple of days and then sneak one in like that. You gotta appreciate that level of commitment.

I got sidetracked often, so it took me a while to finish it, but I got there eventually.

A fascinating look at one of the greatest business minds of the last hundred years. I have a whole new respect for him, warts and all.

My wife just called me from the book store. She was picking up books 2 and 3 of Hunger Games for my birthday. She couldn't find them. Then they pointed over to the "Teen Bestsellers" aisle. She called to tell me, laughing her ass offf. Then messaged me a pic. Dang. :o

The second in Scott Lynch's (so far) superb Gentlemen Bastard series. I was reluctant at first because I'm not too gone on naval/piracy books but it fairly zipped along in it's coarse, contemporary way.

However it was mired slightly by a bottom-of-the-deck noble sacrifice that has more than a hint of Darth Maul Syndrome about it. Things could get tedious fast if interesting characters are introduced and then ditched in every book, particularly since there's 7 books intended altogether. Still, I'll be reading the third.

So to cheer me up- nothing fits quite as comfy as a good Gemmell. Not too far in yet but it's one of his older ones so I'm expecting great things. They make nice commas inbetween other books.

Half way through The Hobbit. First time actually reading it. I figure if the movie is in two parts, I can stop here and pick it back up in a year or so. :D
