If HD-DVD/Blu Ray players will play DVDs, will you upgrade your whole collection our just the really good movies.
Like would you buy ANOTHER version of "Get Over It" but you would buy the best Version of Star Wars, right?

Most of the recent releases (last 2-3 years) have a good enough video quality that I probably won't replace them. I've replaced a few in my collection, and IMO on the newer discs the difference doesn't justify the cost. For example, going back and watching upscaled versions of Star Wars and Indiana Jones through my PS3 onto my 27" HDTV, I can see the pores in Harrison Ford's skin and can count the legs on the fly that crawls into Belloq's mouth. How much more detail do I want than that?

Maybe if I had a kick ass sound system I'd want the uncompressed audio, but I'm not going to be going out and spending $10,000 on a sound system anytime soon.

If available, I'm buying all my newer movies in Blu-ray format, though. The difference is worth the extra $5-10. I'll probably only upgrade older titles (more than 2-3 year old) if they're action/animation/CG intensive. Everything else can stay as it is.

I suppose it depends on the brand player you get, but I've been generally impressed with how effective upconverting DVD players are. At least on a 42" screen, an upconverted DVD has enough clarity to avoid looking like crummy stretched-out 480i. Now if you're using a well calibrated projector on a 100"+ screen, well then I might consider getting some of my favorites on HD. But on my budget, that ain't happening any time soon.

My question is...will the new HD players play stardard DVDs? I assume the Blue Ray players won't, but what about the HD DVD? Enter my ignorance.

Depends on the brand, but lots of Blu-ray and HD-DVD players I've seen are backwards compatible with standard DVD discs. If you want to go Blu-ray, though, just buy a PS3. It's actually cheaper than most stand-alone Blu-ray players, plus it plays normal DVDs, CDs, has a HDD, and is actually starting to get some good games on it. Conversely, HD-DVD has a cheaper entry point for players, although not as much disc capacity.

Both formats have huge backings, and I imagine the whole format war will go on for a long time, and maybe even never resolve. The market is probably big enough for both formats, which is a shame for consumers. This whole movie format exclusivity jazz is starting to piss me off.

Nah, the HD-Disc side is trying to make Blu-ray look like Betamax, but with Disney, Sony, Warner Brothers, Apple etc., all backing Blu-ray and Blu-ray outselling HD-Discs 9 to 1 in Asia, I don't think you'll see an end to the format war anytime soon.

When was Asia EVER right about anything? Cows should be eaten. Don't print money before you've won a war. And Communism is a great idea...on paper.
And I'm hardly going to base a large purchase on the dudes that penned Heat of the Moment.

Well, they got JIT manufacturing right and dusted the American automobile industry, so they got that going for them. I'm not too worried either way, though. I doubt either format will end up like laser discs. I'd just like to be able to buy whatever movie I want on whatever format I choose. The only thing both sides are doing is turning consumers against studios because of exclusivity.
