Star Trek XI
I know there’s a TV Trek thread, but lately I’ve been re-watching all the movies, and, well, I now we don’t know exactly what the new movie is about, but going back to the original series seems wrong. As if they’re playing safe and recycling characters we love, and in my opinion should be left alone.
Like Marksiwel touched upon in the TV thread - In a perfect world, regardless of past box office results, etc; would anyone else have preferred a new crew, further into the future? A cross-over pic, or even one last Next Gen adventure?
Anything else think bringing back - as it stands - the OS crew is a bad idea?

It could go either way. The movie is supposed to be an origin story for the original crew. Either its going to be a movie for fans only, full of references galore, or its going to be an all out attempt to attract new fans to the franchise, which may or may not adhere to cannon. Hopefully J.J. knows what he's doing.
On a side note, I finally watched Serenity the other day. They should just get Whedon to remake that movie with the Star Trek brand. Bam! Instant money and franchise revival guaranteed.

I think, from reading around, that's the fans no. 1 fear, but I'm sure it’s been stated by someone that it'll definitely adhere to Trek canon.

I know someone working on it. He won't tell me anything except there are only 4 copies of the script and they are locked in a vault. I am so not exaggerating either.
I know the researcher watched all of of the original series and specific episodes from the other series when a specific thing was referenced. That is as much as I know.

Maybe it's around the original captain?
You know, the guy before Kirk who had the black box with the blinking light (can't remember name and not bothered looking it up).
But yes, I don't want a re-hash.
Would MUCH preferred a whole new crew from JJ.
Maybe if he set it to run at the same time as the original S.T. like a rival ship, but I don't think they're doing that.

Yeah, AB's right, Commander Pike. Spock was his second, or maybe just his Science Officer. It could very well go back to that. I saw a Q and A on IFC from the San Diego Comic-Con that had the new Spock(Zachary Quinto):

and Mr. Nimoy, himself, discussing the role, but not much about storyline. Haven't heard much about that.

I wholeheartedly agree. The franchise needs revitalized. Voyager was drek, Enterprise was an honest attempt to tell a new type of Star Trek story, but then they had to sexy it up to attempt to force feed a younger "hipper" audience. The tried and formerly "true" formula of the Star Trek franchise will no longer work. The market has been overly saturated with Star Trek "product" since TNG gave way to DS9. We all have to remember that the main reason TNG worked was because it had been so long since the original series. Trekkies were hungry for more, and that was their buffet. Hurrah for mixed metaphors and all the quotations I used in this post!

Excellent.
I officially "like" you, in a hetero/manly way... like the way vikings bonded.
I rate you as 11 out of 12 monkeys.
P.S.
Scott Bakula should be given another chance with a better Trek story.
He was wasted in Enterprise.
Imagine how great he could have been in Rikers role on TNG. Or in place of the shit doctor on DS9!

And I thank you sir. It's not very often that a man scores a nonsexual mancrush. I find it to be the most flattering type of positive reinforcement. I am, of course, assuming that the vikings didn't bond via some sort of heterosexual butt sex. :)
I would agree on the Bakula statement. The guy has some serious chops, and I've been a casual fan ever since Quantum Leap. When I found out he would be the new Captain of the Enterprise my basic response was..."Ya. That makes perfect sense. I like it." - Not very telling or exciting of a statement, but the casting just seemed so appropriate.

I will probably get laughed at and called a traitor, but I actually kind of liked "Enterprise", but then, I also liked "Voyager". I will admit that they did violate some of the Trek tenet in some of their episodes, but overall, it was good. I didn't really care for the whole Xindi scenario at first; thought it lasted too long, but after checking it out again on Sci-Fi, it is growing on me. I just regret that the great writing of season 4 had no chance of saving the show.

I loved the first season of Enterprise. And then it began. The bouncing around on the schedule. The Starship Troopersesque addition of the marine squadron. So I lost interest. I loved the idea of the fledgling Federation of Planets stumbling along the way.
Why can't television stations just give a show time to develop? Especially one with such promise. OK. Now I am starting to sound like a drunk lamenting an ex-girlfriend who never really loved him.

I'm with you there. I'm slowly catching up on Voyager, and although it's not classic trek, I'm glad its there... if that makes sense?
I didn't see alot of Enterprise, but what I did see, I enjoyed - even the series finale - which, I think got alot of flak.
On the new movie; I'd like to see a new crew, too, with a few guest stars from the Next Gen era. Maybe a glimpse at the Titan?

I actually refused to watch Voyager when it first came out because I had heard that the storyline was that Janeway was the Captain and she got lost. I was like, wow, they finally make a woman a Captain and she gets the ship lost and the entire series is her trying to get back. Well, I finally watched an episode in the 4th season and really liked it, so I started checking out the earlier episodes and then found out how they got lost and was like...ah, so it wasn't really her fault (i.e. she wasn't a completely incompetent Captain).
ZBarclay
10-04-2007, 11:02 AM
I hated Voyager for the fact that about once a month, the crew would get a chance (via some alien race, temporal fold, or mystical organ grinder's monkey) to return to Earth, only for Janeway to come up with some obscure reason why they could not take advantage of the opportunity. At first they passed it off like Janeway was SUCH a good captain that she was taking not only the crew's best interest into account, but ultimately the universe(s) as a whole. Then it just became a trite plot device to make sure that the series and ultimate underlying theme continued on for another season. If you've been living in a cave and don't know how the series ended *SPOILER FOLLOWS*
AND THEN when the final episode finally aired and they returned home...talk about anticlimactic. This quote should sum it up. Me - "Wow. If I had been watching this show religiously, every week, for 7 years, I'd be pissed."
My buddy David - "Ya. I have. And I am."
Antonio_Bay
10-04-2007, 11:13 AM
I didn't mind the finale; As we sort of saw what they are were doing in the future at the start of the finale, I didn't mind seeing the ship get home and then having the credits roll - so we do get some closure for the crew.
What I have noticed about Voyager is 70% of the time, a concentrated tachyon burst will open, attack, close, rip and solve many of the problems they come up against. :D

I have the same complaint that I had with the movie Castaway.
I was interested to see the crew adjusting to being back. Seeing their interactions with family and friends, how the Federation handles their return. I guess quite a bit of that was negated by the sciencemagical...it's a new term...I like it...communication they were allowed back to Earth and the Federation (not sure what season that started).
These people were thrust thousands of light years from home, with basically no interaction with their families and loved ones for years (until said sciencemagical). I am sure many thought them dead and moved on with their lives. What a chance for depth and character discovery for the Star Trek franchise...but alas...business as usual. *Poof* they're home. Cut.

That's a fair statement. DS9 definately dealt with a lot heavier subject matter, in a more in your face way than any of the shinier happier Treks. Genocide and death were visited heavily in DS9 in a way that otherTreks usually just hinted at or glossed over.

Ds9 Took Space Drama to a new level. It was like Cheers Meets TNG
I always thought Voyager should have been like how BSG turned out to be. Low on SUpplies, Politcal Problems, but with Aliens trying to beat your ass everywhich way.
Instead it was the crew becoming best buddies, and dealing with Tits McBorg every other week.

I agree. Voyager was just too...pretty...well excluding the plot points, most of the dialogue and the rather pathetic conflicts and their "resolutions"...none of those were pretty at all.
And Seven of Nine was FAR too predominantly featured. I liked looking at her and all, but seriously, she had the personality of a toe nail.

Well that's some damn good news. Pegg has some real solid acting ability and should round out the cast well, mahaps providing some quality (hopefully a bit reserved) comedic relief.

The ship looks too high tech to fit into any sort of history, so why have Nimoy make an appearance. Second, I am only a casual Trek fan, I have never watched all the episodes of the first show and only seen the movies a few times. But even I know that if this involves the academy like they keep implying, Kirk went to the academy later than the others, so Pike should have the ship and Checkov should come along in about eight or nine years. Continuity is all fucked up.

I think they should have went somewhere between the Enterprise in the series "Enterprise" and the one from the original series.
Ugh, I type a whole diatrab that erased with a tap of the backspace buttone (damn laptop keyboard).
1. If Uhura's dialogue (thanks Antonio B.!) is any indication; we're screwed utterly with character. Simon Pegg is going to regret this if he's not fed decent dialogue. I hope someone lets him chime in on script.
2. The new ship............too new..........I smell Jar Jar and "look who made C3PO!"
This movie is going to have Trekkies/Trekkers both casual and diehard throwing their feces at the screen. My prediction is all diehard Trekkies will wear a gimp suit and ball gag to the movie theater just to prepare for the degradation of their cherished memories.

"Well James, you just drove a vintage sweet ass Vette' of a cliff for no reason........great job asshole. Someone will probably promote you for that type of jackass behavior."
They are making Kirk out to be James Dean or worse: Top Gun Maverick.
My guess; they are going to grudge fudge every one of these beloved old school Trek characters. And they'll pat themselves on the back for it.

When I saw that trailer the first thing I said was, "I'll probably have to see that movie. It looks cool despite the fact that it's Star Trek."

The trailer is now officially up (http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/startrek/) in all its HD glory.
At the moment I agree with Aaron and Dtcb. Best thing about the trailer is the use of the alert claxon...

Brand spanking trailer.

There's no denying it looks good, but... just, but.
Edit - does the score remind anyone of Batman Begins?

The more I see of Eric Bana's character...Xenu or whatever his name is, the less excited I am. I'm not sure exactly why. I'm also a little disappointed that Simon Pegg didn't get any lines for either trailer.
Edit: forgot about his "I like this ship.." line in the first trailer.

Very much so, but it's even more like The Dark Knight's evolution of that theme.

Well I'm actually really looking forward to this. Perhaps because I was never particularly into the original series, so I'm not bothered about it contradicting the timeline or whatever.
And I think the Enterprise should look as cool and futuristic as possible. They shouldn't be restricted to what looked futuristic on a limited budget in the 60s.

Anyone planning to see this?
Let me say something here about my affections for Star Trek:
I grew up watching the reruns of the original series. At some point, I'd seen them all. I loved them. I still do. They remind me of some happy times in my childhood.
Then The Next Generation came along. However, by this point, I was in high school. I was more interested in getting laid than I was in watching TV- I was a playa back in tha day. Besides, I was grounded most of the time. I couldn't watch TV most of the time hence I never really got into TNG, therefore, I just don't really care for it.
I've seen just about every episode of Voyager- it was in reruns when I was snowed in up in Wisconsin for days at a time. Besides, Seven of Nine was smoking hot. I think everyone would agree.
I've only seen the first four Star Trek movies- the first one was ok, The Wrath of Khan... I still remember going to see it in the theater with my dad and my sister and then waiting an hour for the waitress to bring us our food in Denny's. (They never did, we wound up leaving) The third, meh... and the fourth? Sorry, traveling back in time to save the whales to me was just as bad as jumping the shark. It was about then I just quit caring.
I'm not a Trekkie in any sense of the word, but this new movie has given me cause to be interested in the franchise for the first time in a long time. If that upsets the die hards, too bad.

My affections stemmed from coming home when in year 11 and 12 of school (that's how our senior school years were numbered here) throwing my school bag down by the stairs and laying on the sofa to watch the TNG run. Just a great show. I missed much of DS9's and the Voyager run, but have since pretty much caught up on DVD. Same with TOS (McCoy being my fav character in all of Trekdom.) I'm thankful for new Trek, but equally weary. New film looks good. I just don't want it meddling with continuity which overall has been pretty well protected throughout 40+ years.

You stopped at the whales!? You're missing the odd viewing delight!

I am a trekkie, albeit a lapsed one. I love the original series, TNG and Deep Space Nine. I was never a big fan of Voyager (apart from Ms. Jeri Ryan of course) or Enterprise, and in the last few years my interest has waned.
Until very recently I had little interest in the new film, but since the early reviews have come out I have started to get excited. Then a friend of mine went to the Irish premiere and came out foaming at the mouth he liked it so much, so now I'm pretty stoked. I would be going to a preview screening on Thursday except that I have a ticket to see Blade Runner that night (w00t!). My 10-year school reunion is on Friday so no dice that day either. I'm hoping to make it t the cinema by Saturday.

I'm definitely planning to see it.
I was never a huge fan of the original series, but I loved TNG and Voyager and enjoyed DS9. I viewed Enterprise as a bad version of Stargate: Atlantis, because thats what it felt like.
I'm probably gonna see it next monday because my brother-in-law is in Istanbul and he'll kill me if I see it before him.
EDIT: Also, much of my excitement over The Green Lantern movie that they might be working on is based on whether I like Chris Pine as Kirk.
... and a star to sail her by...
This movie was awesomesauce. From start to finish.
I will probably go see it again on Monday.

I saw it on Sunday. It really had no right to be as good as it was. Just a solidly fun, fresh, brisk 2 hours. I really hope that a) it makes enough money to spawn a sequel, and b) that the same creative team sticks around for the next two (at least).
I'm watching it again on Friday. Can't wait!

That was a great surprise to me as well. I didn't even want him in the film, because it made no sense. Chekov joined the crew second season. It really worked though. He was funny without being pure comic relief. In fact, I thought everyone was given their purpose really well.

Weirdly, the only minor weak link for me was Simon Pegg's Scotty. Nothing wrong with his performance, but it did feel like an afterthought.
Man, thinking back on it and talking about it here only makes me want to see it again right now! I haven't felt this excited to see a movie a second time since The Dark Knight.

To keep it spoiler free-I did not have that issue. They introduced Scotty in a way that made him important and kept the age difference in place. I thought it worked well.
I liked that Karl Urban seemed to be channeling DeForest Kelley, even his posture...
I hope no one thinks of that as a spoiler...

Personally, I am getting tired of all the "lens flare" talk. I am thinking that people who have no idea what they are talking about are complaining about something they read on the internet and are regurgitating to sound smart. All of the sudden everyone is a filmmaker? Tell me all of you budding cinematographers, how do you get a lens flare? How do you stop them? What do you do when your director adopts them as a stylistic choice?

I've never heard/read anyone complaining about the flares as a cinematic or stylistic device. However, I have read comments complaining about the flares being visually annoying. Personally, it bothered me how they kept obscuring the action; and when I saw the movie in Imax, I actually had to squint against the flare because they were so bright. I have no qualms against unique lighting choices for stylistic effect, but they shouldn't hurt your eyes when you see them.
I don't recall any excessive lens flare...

Well, they're not all actual lens flare. Some are just excessively bright lights. And I think it might also depend on how sensitive your eyes are to these kinds of things.

It's tiresome. You know a movie is good when the only thing people can think to complain about is the feckin' lens flare.
Really, I do not remember any lens flares, sun dogs, super bright lights, or anything close to seizure inducing photons...

Just in case anyone wanted to spot him.
R2-D2 location: **SPOILER **
During the Drill Machine sequence as the Enterprise comes out of its barrel role amidst destruction of the other Federation ships above Vulcan, we cut to an interior Enterprise bridge over the shoulder of Kirk that is looking out through the front viewscreen. In space, R2-D2 is floating in the debris from about the top middle of the screen to the bottom right.
