Anyone else dissapointed that Grindhouse is being sold as two individual movies? QT's Death Proof will go on sale Sept. 18th, and Planet Terror doesn't even have a release date yet! Plus, the missing reels from each flick will be added back into the film, which is fine for Death Proof, but the missing reel gag in Planet Terror had me laughing even long after the movie ended (won't spoil it for anyone who has yet to see it)! Its bad enough so few people actually turned out in theatres for what is one of the most memorable cinematic experiences I've ever had, but its worse to punish the few people who did support the film. I know Miramax is trying to cover their expenses, but did they ever stop to consider that Grindhouse's stronger market might have been on DVD? Sure, Planet Terror and Death Proof work as individual films, but they were clearly designed to be watched together.

Count me as one pissed off consumer who is still going to buy both films.

What do you expect from QT? It is all about the money and they probably figure they will make more this way.

well if its any condolence for you, I have heard that both movies are supposed to be released together later. I don't know if they will also include the missing reels but I heard that they may not have the trailers.....very depressing :(

I'd really like to believe that, but I haven't seen any news hinting at that possibility yet. I also waited quite awhile for the DVD release of the Kill Bill master cut that was supposed to come out years ago but was silently abandoned. Considering all the love that goes into Kevin Smith's DVD's, I wish Miramax would support their other director's visions just as much.

I agree with you on about everthing mentioned. It's a real kick to the groin for any fan who actually went to the theater to see it to have to pay for each film seperate. I can almost completely guarantee that I'll only buy Planet Terror now, also, since I didn't love Death Proof all that much the first time.

Keep in mind, Disney owns Miramax now. Kev's stuff was almost always with the Weinsteins, who used to own Miramax.

I too have read this somewhere. Still, it's a bit of a rip-off for those who payed for their cinema tickets only to then have to cough up for two DVD's depsite how much extra footage is squeezed in.

Like Bizzaro, I'll only be buying Planet Terror. I can wait for the tv premiere of Death Proof.

There was an interview with Quentin in this months issue of "Empire", a British made film magazine. In this interview he said that even before Grindhouse was released, it was understood that the films would be released separately at first on dvd for the fact that the Weinstein bros put so much faith into their project and they needed somewhere to make the extra money. So it's not like Quentin wanted the cash.

In regards people saying that the Kill Bill whole movie has been shelved... It hasn't. The last question in the interview was in regards the movie. He responded that it was all finished and ready to roll. That he was too busy with Grindhouse to do it quickly enough. Better late than never I say.

If you can't get your hands on a copy in the states, I assume a copy of it is available somewhere online.

In the long run it may end up costing them. The primary reason i haven't purchased a Kill Bill DVD is because i'm waiting for two disc set or whatever. Anymore I don't even purchase a DVD unless it claims to be the ultimate superior mega-edition with any conceivable extra included with the target bonus disk etc.... too many times I've purchased a DVD only to be disappointed to see that there's a better edition being released. Most notably Kingdom of Heaven. The director's cut of that is light years better than the theatrical cut.

I don't care that they split and expanded the films. That was expected. What pisses me off is that at least on Deathproof, they junked the fakes trailers. And they didn't even include the original Grindhouse trailers.

plus the weasels at Blockbuster are only renting a 1 DVD version.

They're 15 quid for the two in HMV, which is probably close to twenty of your american dollars. They are here anyway, I'm not sure if the same sale applies globally.

Terrible idea releasing Death Proof first. It's certainly the weaker of the two. For anyone who hasn't seen either of the films, Death Proof might put them off Planet Terror, which would be a crying shame. Then again, I've only seen the original cut of Death Proof. I didn't hate it at all. I found the last twenty minutes quite exhilarating.

You know, I am all for adding special features/featurettes on DVD releases, but taking shite out is inexcusable to me. When I purchase a DVD it's either because I really liked what I saw in the cinematic release, or heard from other people that the film was great, and missed it in the theatre.
I heard great things about Grindhouse and was looking forward to the purchase, but now, simply out of principle, I will not be wasting my money. I really wish I didn't have to get George Lucased EVERY time a new movie comes out. Christ.

Ok...that was how my post was before I went to Target.

Then I caved. God I am a sucker for marketing. I feel so ashamed.

....I liked Death Proof and made myself give in and buy.:o One: because I had friends that wanted to watch it and two: because it was my favorite of the two and I began to realize that it would be harder to recreate the entire cinematic experience that was GRINDHOUSE. And releasing the films this way makes te experience more accesable for the general public. However, releasing these films without the trailers is just inexcusable. So what if Death Proof has a Planet Terror trailer. I want Machete, Don't, Werewolf Women of the SS, and Thanksgiving!!!!

Exactly. I had heard that the experience of the faux trailers was really a neat deal and was looking forward to seeing them on DVD. But, I guess that is why I live in Waterloo, IA instead of making the big decisions as a studio executive.
I did watch Death Proof this morning and enjoyed it, a lot. I thought it was shot really well. The niche cinema market that Tarantino has cornered is really amazing. He really makes you feel like you're watching a 60's and 70's exploitation film, all the while juxtaposing modern language / pop culture with vintage vehicles and clothing. I love when someone does something original. I don't need to see another Hollywood Homicide, I Know What You Did Last Summer Catch, I Have a Grudge Against the Ring, or any of the 1800 femme hero Japan wire guided action fluff pieces that came out after Kill Bill.

I did a 2 week free trial of netflix (they actually extended it 2 more weeks to 4 weeks total when I tried cancelling the first time) and if you stream the grindhouse films you can see all of the trailers and commercials.

It's a tool computer users access for porn and watered down social interaction with other computer users.
