Thoughts ?
That they copied everything The Pixies did and were therefore not the godfathers of anything.
Nirvana was way different then The Pixies .
Kurt was completely original with his lyrics.

Prove me wrong, Mr. Mason.
Personally, I've directed two short films, produced another, and worked in assorted positions in half a dozen others.
As for Blake, he even puts me to shame.
Get back in your hole, newb!

Back on target, while I certainly don't consider them the "godfathers of grunge" Nirvana did nearly single handedly change the face of music in 1991. And then three years later, they were gone.
As far as the name dropping- I've found that most people who have to do it haven't got much else to offer beyond "I know so and so."
Well, they ended cause Kurt killed himself, why continue with the band ?

Kurt was planning on quiting before he was killed. Boy bands and hip hop were taking over the airwaves and country music was begining to see a resurgence. April 9th, 1994 was just the nail in the coffin that wound up sitting in the funeral home for way too long.
Also, I'm interested in your response to the second part of my previous statement...

Remember when Neil Young showed up on the MTV awards with Pearl Jam and he was dubbed "the Godfather of Grunge?"
Yeah, I don't either.
Stupid history with their events that already happened and their monikers that have already been taken.

Nirvana did open the world up to music but they were not the god fathers of grunge. And also damn those 90's boy bands damn them all to hell, they totally ruined radio music.

Remission with March of the Fire Ants got me hooked.

Wasn't Limp Bizkit and that ilk also coming to the forefront as well?
To me, just like every other musical variation before it, Grunge was nothing more than the "hot" flavor (or flava for you hip-hop lovers in the house) for a couple of years and certainly nothing that some sort of musical lineage could be built from.

I don't remember. I'm old. People shouldn't listen to me. ;)

So am I. Why do you think I'm askin'?
I think Limp Bisquick hit around '97? Korn starting hitting the airwaves around '95-'96. My memory is kinda hazy and some things are best forgotten.

The old man is right, Bizkit came after grunge had mostly died out.
And whilst I would agree that Grunge was just a phase and not exactly Beatle-esque in it's amazingness I would say that most rock bands since have been effected by it in one way or another.
It started a trend that is only starting to die now.
And a 15-20 year influence aint something to be sniffed at.
I wouldn't garnish that complement wholey with Nirvana though, acts like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam etc. shaped just as much, if not more, of what goes on today. Kurt was just the poster child.

I guess I can kinda see how today's format of alt-ish rock/metal sound might have a grunge influence to some degree but I'm wondering if it is a strong enough vibe to last a rebirth of it in the 2010s, when all of the nostalgia kicks in.

I think they could be lumped in with the whole "Boy Band" group. Hell, they sucked just as much as the boy bands.

Actually they were worse than boy bands. You see, the boy bands were quite shitty and so was Limp Biz... but there are 2 things that make me like the boy bands more (don't get me wrong both groups make me wanna puke). 1) The songs were cheesy, but they did have ok voices. 2) They decided to come out of the closet instead of hiding blatant homosexuality with homophobia.

Except that
1) Tell me Eddie Vedder's voice isn't sent from the Gods themselves and I'll gut you like a fish.
Grunge bands wrote, composed and often mixed all their own music. Fuck cheesosity show me talent.
2) Boy band members, such as the one you used as an example, mostly come out AFTER the band have gone their seperate ways. If they're untouchable to the teenage girls they're of no use to the marketing people.
I'm interested to know what type of music you're into if you claim to hate both rock and pop.
Is rap all that's left for you? Do you realise how they're all influenced by each other?

I love rock, hate Limp Bizkit. it's simple as that. Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Smashing Pumpkins, Frank Zappa, and the home state heroes Aerosmith are some good bands from the top of my head.As for rap, Dr. Dre is the only rapper i can think of who has any talent at all but Snoop Dogg's got some catchy tunes.
Oh and on the subject of bashing Pearl Jam... not me. Vs. is one of the coolest albums i've had the pleasure to hear.

Oh, that made me laugh.
As a producer Dr. Dre is talented enough, but he can't rap for shit. Listen to some Talib Kweli, Tribe Called Quest, Madvillain, Big L or J Dilla (to name but a few) before you flap your gums about whether or not MCs have talent.

Common, the Roots, and pretty much anything on the Stones Throw label, like Madlib or Quasimoto.
