for anyone who hasn't, watch 'the Devil's Backbone' and 'Pan's Labyrinth'. writer/director guillermo del toro has designed them as companion pieces with common threads in both the design and in literal themes. his symbolism and clever camerawork make them perfect for latenight screenings.
the dvd directors commentary is brilliant. it points out the many ways he uses shapes, light, and horizontal and vertical wipes to signal emotional and psycological character changes. if you don't like subtitles this isn't for you, though the visuals are more than enough to maintain interest.
though they focus on children, the films address adult problems that exist at the core of human experiance.

I really enjoyed Pan's Labyrinth. I had heard it was kinda gory but it did surprise me still. Some of the things that happened, I just didn't expect. One of the reasons why I wanted to see it was people kept comparing it to a horror film and I love that genre. I really liked the whole feel to it and especially the visuals. I adore Pan.
Haven't seen Devil's Backbone though. Should I pick it up?

My date when i saw Pans Labrynth was so pissed about the subtitles. I thought it was a pretty sweet flick tho. I thought the girl was pretty sweet, too. Then after that awesome date I found out one of my friends got this girl pregnant. I can't bring myself to watch that movie again.

First, congratulations to me. This is my first post on this bulletin board.
I loved both.
Each has a different feel, but play to a child's innocence in an adult world.

Pan's is a good movie. I expected a lot more from the story. But visually is amazing.

*SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN PAN’S LABYRINTH*
I’m curious how everyone interpreted the ending of Pan’s Labyrinth. I’ve seen the movie with about a dozen or so people, and it’s about a fifty-fifty split on how they interpreted the ending. Do you think the fairy-tale was real, or was the ending nothing more than Ofelia’s mind escaping the reality of her own death by fully submerging herself into her fantasy world? Is there any hardcore evidence in the movie you’d present to make your case?

Pan's Labyrinth was excellent .. visually stunning, and a great dark fairytale.
Haven't seen Devil's Backbone .. but if it's the companion for PL, I'll have to see it now.
