I've come to the conclusion that I do not like Golden Apple Comics.
- Every single one of the workers looked and treated at me with what I can only interpret as disdain. Every. Single. One.
- The patrons, though this is no fault of the establishment, were all pricks. Generally rude and had an air of pretentiousness.
- No bags or boards were provided upon checkout. A practice I have become used to from every other damn comic shop that I've been to.
- I just didn't like the layout of their comic rack.
I'll try Meltdown next week, see if I like that any better than my local shops.
Next time dude, try Comics Ink in Culver City. Best little comic shop on the West Coast.

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE! Marvel is being bought by Disney! (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/090831-disney-acquire-marvel.html)
Well, I suppose that's bad news really cos Disney would make Marvel into more of a whore than it already is. X-Men Musical, anyone? ~We're all mutants together!~
I'm so glad to be a DC fan right now :P
I highly doubt it'll go down like that. It'll probably me more like DC/Warner Bros. Warner has no say in the creative portion of DC, so I doubt Disney will be sticking their noses in the comics' business.

The thing I'm most worried about is if it will affect the movies at all. Being owned by Disney, they might have to make the movies more accessable to all ages instead of being adult-oriented the way that WB/DC is doing.

I am not worried at all, Disney likes money, marvel makes money, everyone stays happy.
I really don't think wolverine will be popping up in 'it's a small small world' or that namor and ariel will start playing water polo together...
If anything marvel gets a piece of the fat sin-filled Disney money-cake.
Also, what is universal going to do with the marvel island that that theme park? Is this just disney's way of invading?

Now there I can actually see why you'd be concerned. The big rumor going around is that Disney may try to tone down the movies, and there is speculation they may put the kibosh on Thor, Cap, and The Avengers flicks.

Yeah, I was wondering if Disney would try to monopolize the movies and remove Marvel Studios' independent movies from the roster. They saw how successful Iron Man was and they want to make sure that they get a piece.

review of Meltdown Comics in Hollywood:
Granted, this was not on a new comics day...I was impressed. It was a very open store, something that I'm not used to from a comic shop. Very neat layout, and I liked the fact that it was arranged by Publisher/Alphabetically instead of everything grouped together.
Their collection of back issues was fairly good, but not overly impressive, but the sheer amount of trades and graphic novels was astounding.
Another plus was the massive amounts of secondary merch that they had (not to mention all of the Tin Tin items which I wanted to empty my bank accounts for).
Again, like Golden Apple, no bags or boards were provided upon purchase, but I liked the place so much and the staff was nice enough for me to overlook the 15 cent per bag charge.
Hell of a drive to get there though.
I plan to go back on a Wednesday when there is new comics in the near future.

I've been reading a lot of Judge Dredd stories recently. I collected 2000AD for years, but gave up about four or five years ago when I realised I was buying it out of habit, rather than because I was actually enjoying it. Anyway, I read through a load of the old ones, and caught up with some of the storylines that there have been since I stopped getting it.
God damn. I forgot how much I love the fascist bastard.

So much so that I'm very tempted to start picking it up again, even though I can't afford it, and I have nowhere to store yet more comics.

Time for a weekly comic review by Michael:
Punisher - Noir #2:
So far, I'm liking this much more than the other Noir series, save maybe Spider-Man. Gritty and the time period really fits the Punisher as a character. Bit of a shocker for an ending though.
Blackest Night #3 of 8:
Finally...something about the Black Lanterns gets explained and some other surprises that make things make a lot more sense.
X-Men - Legacy Annual #1:
I really like where this is going. Cyclops turning into something amazing and with Asteroid M as their base, mutants have a good thing for the moment.
Secret Six #13:
Seriously, if you don't read this series, you need to pick it up. Great stories, great characters and the villains that Simone introduces are just lovely.
The Walking Dead #65:
Oh lord, how I love this series. All kinds of disgusting and all kinds of twisted. Its never been just about zombies, its about the monsters that humans become in desperate situations and this issue don't disappoint.
Batgirl #2:
Again, another series that I'm liking so far. Though, I am getting a little tired of there being about 43 different Bat-people acting as superheroes in Gotham.
Batman and Robin #4:
Grant Morrison's writing has always been hit or miss. This issue is a miss for me, and its hurt even more by the loss of Frank Quietly's beautiful artwork. We'll see where this goes.
Streets of Gotham #4:
First off...amazing cover, Zsasz in all his glory. The comic is just great, easily the best of the week. Bonus feature of Manhunter is quite wonderful as well. Paul Dini just gets better all the time.
Adventure Comics feat. Superboy #2:
I don't know how Geoff Johns finds the time...he's DC's Bendis or Millar. Another great comic, thought I'm not sure where it can go from here that isn't going to be just a repeat story.
Ultimate Avengers #2:
I'm so very glad that Millar is back on the Ultimates. So very glad.

I love the whole 2000AD universe. They did some fantastic stuff in the early days and recently re-released a whole bunch of old stories in the '2000AD Extreme' range, reprinting some epics like Meltdown Man in their entirety. They can be ordered online and are well worth a look.

I read from hell and even though it was a bit hard to get into at first, its a fantastic book. I wouldn't buy it without reading at least some of it though, you might just hate it and waste 25 bucks. Check and see if any local libraries have it or if they can request it from another close library before buying it.
I forgot to add to this week's comic list:
Daredevil - Dark Reign: The List #1
Ultimate Iron Man - Armor Wars (1 of 4)

Hector Plasm: Totentanz
http://media.mycomicshop.com/iss/300w/600/15766001/19577546_1.jpg
This is the followup to the fantastic first Hector Plasm one shot that came out a couple years ago.
The new volume is 48 pages, no ads, all good.
The title character is a Benandanti, a sort of globe trotting ghost buster, and the stories collected in the first and second volumes chronicle many different encounters he's had with the supernatural, and little glimpses into his past.
The art is amazing. Nate Bellegarde illustrates, Jacob Baake on colors. Here's a recent promo illustration they put out for "Hectorween".
http://www.mcfumunda.com/hectorween.jpg
Other work you may have seen by Nate and the writer Benito Cereno are the Invincible spin-offs about Atom Eve and now Rex Splode (both highly recommended). Nate also illustrated the last bunch of Brit from Image comics. He did some Hack/Slash, and Loaded Bible. If you dig his art, check out his LJ where he posts a lot of sketches and other shit. Benito wrote the fantastic "Tales from the Bully Pulpit" that came out from Image a few years ago.
http://fetorpse.livejournal.com/ He's also got an artblog: http://fetorpse.blogspot.com/
Highly recommended book and creators to keep an eye out for.

The Mighty #10
Dramatic turn in the series. Can't say I didn't see it coming though. Tomasi couldn't just make a Irredeemable clone, I guess.
Batman: The Widening Gyre (3 of 6)
Good, solid comic. I like where its going. Glad that this one didn't end on the same negative note that the first two did.
Black Widow: Deadly Origin #1
Easily my pick of the week. Great comic.
Haunt #2
Kirkman writing? MacFarlane finally doing some good inking? Possession and ultra-violence? Yes to all. Great comic.
Secret Six #15
No more Gail Simone. Still a good comic though. I was a little disappointed that the issue only focused on Deadshot and not the rest of the six, but it was a good story.
Captain America: Reborn (4 of 5...er...6)
Hmm...I hope this gets less crazy in the next issue. I've liked it so far and Ed Brubaker hasn't done me wrong, but I can see where this can get stupid very easily.
Star Wars: Invasion #5
A filler issue, just adding a small amount to the story, nothing really great here. I will continue to read only because I am a rabid fanboy.

Looks like Bruce Wayne is set to return already!
The World’s Greatest Detective is facing his toughest mystery.
Lost in the timestream, believed to be dead by his friends and enemies alike, Bruce Wayne must use every bit of intelligence, every ounce of strength and training he’s acquired over the years to find his way back to the city, and adopted family of vigilantes, he’d left behind.
Blasted by the mysterious and powerful Omega Effect in the pages of FINAL CRISIS during a deadly battle with the malevolent New God Darkseid, Bruce Wayne must battle back through the waves of time to reclaim what was his – his city, his life…his cowl?
From the kinetic and awe-inspiring imagination of writer Grant Morrison and an all-star cast of artists, including Chris Sprouse, who’ll handle art chores on the first issue, BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #1 (of 6) hits in April and will prove to be Bruce Wayne’s defining moment as a hero, and his toughest challenge yet.
There's even some concept art for the series, showing Brucie in two different costumes.

Its not that Im finding it confusing, its the fact that I cant get past the idea that its a comic style thing that is making it hard to get into. I just never liked comics, likewise cartoons and most animated stuff like the simpsons and king of the hill and also the manga stuff etc. I just have some kind of bizzarro anti comic/cartoon thing going on that I just find it difficult to get past regardless of the quality

It was the first comic I every really liked after years of trying to get into Spider-Man, X-Men and various other Marvel creations, and failing. Batman RIP.
I'm sorry.
This is just an awful mess of a story. An example of when Morrison tries far too hard to be edgy and creative with his storytelling and it just ends up being ridiculous and fairly annoying. To fully understand R.I.P. you have to have read Batman: The Black Glove and some of the stuff leading up to it from Batman & Son and The Return of Ra's Al Ghul
And the way he tied it into Final Crisis in what seemed like an afterthought was just lazy.

In all fairness to Morrison, I think that's what he intended but the powers that be told him to stick the death in Final Crisis as opposed to what he planned, hence a little one page cop-out explaination. While DC has the best characters, plots and talent, sometimes the editors are just dicks. :(

Well, just like Alan Moore's Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? (another good read) was basically a standalone story, I feel that Gaiman's was as well. It just happened to be released right after the R.I.P. event. The story's are not dependent on each other though. The Gaiman story is just based on how the main Batman characters would react to the death of Batman.

Recommendations for good Batman/Superman trades, plus some good starter stories for Green Lantern would be most welcome.
Batman:
The Long Halloween by Jeph Loep
Great crime story about the Falcone crime family (Tom Wilkinson played an approximation of him in The Dark Knight), Two-Face, and a kind of mysterious killer. The story is well worth the value as one of the biggest trades I've seen.
Batman: Year One by Frank Miller
Definitive Batman story, badass in training becoming more awesome as the story progresses. Runs parallel to a story about Jim Gordon that's equally good.
Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore
A bit nuts, and more about the Joker than Batman really, but its a very good, dark story.
Batman: Black & White, Vol. 1 by Various
Collection of short Noir type stories by some amazing writers. One of my favorites.
Batman: Cacophony by Kevin Smith (in b4 who's Kevin Smith?)
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this series. Entertaining and one hell of a villain.
Superman:
Superman: Red Son by Mark Millar
A Batman/Superman story about an alternate reality where Superman lands in the USSR in the early 1900s instead of in the USA.
All-Star Superman (Volumes 1 & 2) by Grant Morrison
I'm not a huge Morrison fan, but this and Arkham Asylum are just great.
Superman: Brainiac by Geoff Johns
A new (final?) confrontation between Superman and an old villain. Interesting concepts all around and sets up the New Krypton storyline thats been going on recently.
Superman: For All Seasons by Jeph Loeb
The best Superman origins story, a great, big read.
Green Lantern:
Green Lantern: Secret Origins by Geoff Johns
Re-boot of the series to update the "Emerald Dawn" story up to match with the current Blackest Night and to give Hal Jordan a more modern feel. Very good.
Death and Return of Superman/GL: Emerald Twilight/Zero Hour by Dan Jurgens, Ron Marz, and Dan Jurgens (respectively)
A bit more intensive than you're probably looking for, but if you wanna know a bit more about Hal Jordan and how this whole madness came about this will explain it.
TLDR (highlight): During the Return of Superman series, Coast City (Green Lantern's hometown) was destroyed, he got pissed, went on a killing spree, ended up absorbing the Green Lantern central power battery along with the evil entity Parallax. This drove him insane, he basically destroyed the universe (in Zero Hour) and after the intervention of Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner was eventually stopped. He "died", became the Spectre, and eventually came back in...
Green Lantern: Rebirth, Green Lantern Corps: Recharge, Green Lantern: Wanted Hal Jordan, and Green Lantern: Revenge of the Green Lanterns by Geoff Johns
Tells about how he came back from being "dead" and became Green Lantern again. The return of the Green Lantern corps to full strength. Also shows the distrust that everyone has for Hal after the events of Emerald Twilight/Zero Hour.
Pretty much all of the trades written by Geoff Johns are gonna be good, Sinestro Corps War is probably the most important for understanding whats going on now, but Rage of the Red Lanterns and Agent Orange all add their own little bits of info, but aren't necessary. You kinda figure it out along the way.
If you're really looking for extra reading, All of Peter Tomasi's Green Lantern Corps/Green Lantern work is pretty good as well, it'll help you know who some of the side characters are.

DC has the bigger names in Batman and Superman.
Marvel has Spider-Man and Wolverine as their biggest sellers and lately, their books have mostly sucked. In a world where Spider-Man had the worst etch-a-sketch storyline in recent history (Brand New Day) and Wolverine is in about 4 book weekly on average, they should be getting at least a bit of good content, but its just not happening. Sure, everyone knows Captain America, but its not one of their best selling books by far, even when he wasn't dead.
Marvel has much better teams though. X-Men, Avengers, Fantastic Four, Guradians of the Galaxy, Runaways, Young Avengers, Thunderbolts...
When you think of DC teams, you think Justice League, Teen Titans and maybe the GL Corps and...thats about it.
Sure there are other teams (Some are much better, such as the Secret Six) but nobody knows about them. JSA, Doom Patrol, Outsiders, R.E.B.E.L.S...All of those are side groups that hardly get any attention.
My favorite superhero has always been GL, but my favorite team has always been the X-Men. Each publisher has its merits.

Everything I've read of Superman is very 2D. I find little or no depth to the character. He's too flawless.
That's why characters like Peter Parker, Tony Stark, Matt Murdock, etc. will always appeal to me more. Flawed men = better reading.
This is why I would agree that Batman is a fantastic character. But I don't feel like DC has enough characters that interest me.

Superman, when he's written well as in All-Star Superman and Geoff John's new Secret Origins, can be a very complex character. I'm not his biggest fan, but I like a lot of the books about him. But I felt the same way about Captain America, he was always too perfect, I just liked reading him more than Superman because Superman was too powerful.

I hear the argument that Superman is too flawless all the time, and while I know he isn't the most internally complex character, it's not like you're incapable of telling a good story with him. And like you said Mike, you could also make the argument the Cap is too perfect as well, but in the end, I like both characters, and I feel that's exactly why they're the two greatest heroes in comics.

Easily the best comic of the year. It's Dave Mazzucchelli's masterpiece. It's too bad he doesn't regularly make comics.

Could anyone recommend a few good webcomics?
I'm looking for maybe a geeky comedy kind of thing.

It was a joke...:p
I thought it was well written and very beautifully drawn, but I'm not a fan of that kind of everyman comic. I would just rather read about superheroes and shit most of the time. That doesn't just apply to comics/graphic novels either. I don't like fiction that's about the mundane.

I don't know. I got Y: the last man as the trades, and now I wanna get the larger editions, but it just costs so damn much when they collect that much content. I luckily got the Kingdom Come absolute for about 1/2 price, but 50.00 is a hell of a lot of scratch.

A recent update for The Source over at DC gives us a little look at the fallout of Blackest Night and our first look at the White Lantern symbol.
Starting in April, Brightest Day will be a bi-weekly, 26 issue series kicking off with Brightest Day #0 with GL and GLC under the same banner. It will be written by Geoff Johns and Pete Tomasi. There is apparently numerous talented artists lined up to draw the book, only one of which is confirmed, Fernando Pasarin.
Apart from that, no clues as to what this series will be about but one would assume that it would be a home for the various other Corps this event has spawned. Anyway, here's the teaser image. Enjoy!

Follow the money. It ain't happening. IF Watchmen had made a killing at the box office then it might, but can you imagine going to the money men and persuading them that more money needs to be sunk into an unwanted and untested sequel. I just don't see it in todays entertainment market.
On the plus side, they would have to run it by Alan Moore first, as he has the first writer approval clause on his contract.:D

Rare Cuts is good because its just a bunch of short stories. Original Sin is good but I always found Jamie Delano's writing to be a bit intense and culture heavy, so it was harder for me, as an American, to relate. Dangerous Habits (Garth Ennis' first trade) is pretty incredible. I dug the hell out of Joyride (Andy Diggle) and Good Intentions (Brian Azzarello) too.

What are some of the best Hellblazer trades for someone new to the series?
Rare Cuts is good because its just a bunch of short stories. Original Sin is good but I always found Jamie Delano's writing to be a bit intense and culture heavy, so it was harder for me, as an American, to relate. Dangerous Habits (Garth Ennis' first trade) is pretty incredible. I dug the hell out of Joyride (Andy Diggle) and Good Intentions (Brian Azzarello) too.
I have a friend who is a major fan of Hellblazer and has been trying to get me to read it. I've actually read a few one offs, but never read the series in earnest. My local library has a shitload of the Ennis and Azzarello trades, but they don't have the first couple of the series. It's tough for me to get into something unless I start it from the beginning so I've been holding off for a chance to do it up right.
Plus there's the fact I still haven't finished Transmetropolitain. I really need to get on that. :o

I rarely view this thread because I had to quit reading comics years ago due to lack of income and never picked it back up. Makes me sad.
There are...other ways.

There are...other ways.
Yeah, I used to have a program that would let me read torrents of scanned comics, but I can't remember what it was. I find it tough to read comics on the comp though, it makes my eyes hurt after a while. God knows why, but it does.
If anyone has any good recommendations of "other ways" to get my funny book fix, I'm all ears (and quite a bit of ass, too). The library has a surprising collection of trades that run the gamut of your typical super hero drivel, which honestly, never was really interested in. I liked Batman, Daredevil, Starman and a few others, but mostly I dug Vertigo style stuff.

Then I'm all out of ideas.
I pretty much throw torrents at every one of life's problems. If only there were torrents for sandwiches........oh God, now I'm hungry!

My first suggestion would actually be the library. If you have more than one in the area, check those out because the selection generally varies depending on how knowledgeable the people are who work there. Sometimes they just order what is recommended by Scholastic or some shit and nobody wants that.
Another idea, if you really want to, ask the people at the library if they ever plan to get a certain book, or see if they have patron request forms. We do it all the time if we don't have a book that somebody wants, plus if it checks out and people actually like it, then they're likely to order more of the same type.

Duly noted. :) I'm definitely going to check out Garth Ennis' issues.
I think next month I'm going to drop $40 on this:

Where I live, the library doesn't order SHIT even when you give them a "pretty please" and a charming smile.

So, you're going to let me borrow that when you're done, right? I won't take 10 years to read it like I did Watchmen, and I won't leave it in my closet for all of eternity like I did Preacher Volume 1. :o

Finished reading The Walking Dead #70 and I agree with what Jaster said on one of his episodes. I'm so unsettled by the community they've found that I'm reading everything their group says with suspicion.
Can't pick up Blackest Night #7 for two weeks which sucks, so I have to encase myself in a little bubble to prevent spoilers. :(

I follow enough series to not run out very often, but I've gambled a few times. Either I've been very lucky so far or easy to please but I haven't been disappointed very often.
