Yes, and yes. I felt it was a mildly failed series. It has the grand nature of a Gaiman story, yet I feel he didn't really give a shit about the characters so he never committed to making the story as good as Romita Junior's art.

Too true! It seemed tha Gaiman is keeping up his hit and miss recent record of comics especially compared to RJ's art who pulled out all the stops. I don't think NG can cope with the monthly comic schedule any more. Thinking back on it it seems like the Eternals was an unfinished idea which still needed more work. His last Marvel outing 1602 was fantastic, but it was finished before the first issue was even released. I'll still read it again in a couple of months though.

Sing it ma man! As a movie, it's all right, but when compared to the comic it sucks big watermelon balls. I met David Lloyd on Sunday (co-creator and artist of V) he drew me an A4 size scetch in like 3 mins and it was perfect! Rock on the David Lloyd.

i just stumbled upon a website which had an article about a DC Marvel crossover Amalgamation. this was released in the 90s which were, shall we say, my "dark years" so i never even heard about it. it had characters that were literally amalgums between the 2 verses, like spider-boy a mix of spiderman and superboy, and a cross of batman and wolverine. Was this any good? i have to say I am intrigued!

One thing though, this has started to stick in my craw, because I am a fan of the medium of comics. A graphic novel is a story intended to be published in a single format. A collection of single issues is a trade paperback. I kinda hate the fact that non comic hipsters can read a trade of, say, Sandman and call it a graphic novel and still diss monthly issues. Sandman embraced the format and expanded what it could do, but it was still a monthly comic. A Contract with God is a graphic novel. Watchmen is a trade. Hollywood can say otherwise, but it is a trade. Same as Ultimate Spider-Man Volume 15.
Aaron

Very good point.
I think some people have started to use the Graphic Novel term because it seems to garner a little more respect. It sounds more grown up than talking about "comics".
It shouldn't though. I guess I shouldnt be ashamed of saying it.

The specific releases we were talking about are intended as a closed ended story and not a continuing title, so I would still call them a graphic novel. They're simply releasing them as individual issues to make more money.

If you buy Roots on DVD does that make it a movie? When Lost comes to an end (which has a vision and a date) and it is collected, it will still be a T.V. show. I just think that by dismissing the word comics, we continue to ghettoize (yes it's a word...now) a perfectly promulent source of entertainment.

I have a tendency to call collected limited series' graphic novels and collections of a few issues of an overall series a trade paperback for some reason.
Watchmen came in today and I'll probably reread that soon.

Just tweaking the discussion slightly; how many comic boxes, etc, does everyone have? And what comics mainly fill them?
I have four boxes. One full of 2000AD, the other three full of Dark Horse mini series, DC and Image titles. I don't have many Marvel titles in comparison.

I only allow myself one. When it starts to get full, I look through and see what needs keeping and what I can live without. This summer I sent about a hundred to two hundred books to Heroes for Heroes, a charity that sends comics to the soldiers overseas.
As I am a pretty voracious comics reader it has all sorts of stuff in it. The entire MAXX series, a full run of Buffy and the latest X-Factor, some Robert Crumb stuff, some Spider-Man. Issues of V for Vendetta (thank you garage sales) and other stuff.

Once you start, it's easy. The feeling you need to keep everything goes away, and at least I realized that if I haven't re-read it in like a year or so, I probably won't re-read it. Let's face it a lot of monthlies are disposable and some are outright shite.

I'm a keeper. I don't throw anything away.
I feel that. I have about 500-600 2000ADs, along with loads of specials and annuals and Judge Dredd Megazines, as well as several boxes of various American comics. Fecking boxloads, in short. And I can't bring myself to chuck them, despite knowing I'm never going to read them again. In fact I have, on multiple occasions, wanted to read an old 2000AD story and ended up buying the trade because I couldn't be bothered to search through the boxes till I found the right issues.
Anyway, I'm thinking about starting on Y The Last Man. Any good?

In terms of single issues I don't have many, as I am pretty useless about keeping them. I have like the latest crisis series', Buffy, Howard The Duck, a few one offs. I have a shit load of trades though, mainly from DC/Vertigo, and independents. Most of my collection is DC/Vertigo, but I have a few from all of the big houses, including some Wildstorm stuff before Jim Lee sold the rights to DC. But I'll probs get rid of a load of stuff soon along with a pile of books I don't think I'll read again as my current flat is tiny and I now have 3 big bookcases and no room for people to sit.

So, I'm about halfway through The Watchmen right now. I'm not sure if its because I don't normally read comic books, so I'm not used to the medium, but I'm just not invested at all in the story or the characters.
I know part of it is that there are so many characters I'm having trouble keeping up with who is who and how they are related, which characters were from the first group in the 40's and who's part of the newer group...
I don't know...just got done with the whole section on Dr. Manhattan, and I found that pretty interesting, especially the essay in there about his relationship to global politics, but so far that's the only part that's intrigued me.
Am I alone here?
I am hoping that I will receive a copy of The Watchmen for Christmas as I have never had the opportunity to read it. I want to be up to speed when the movie arrives in theaters.

I have been telling my friends that have not read it yet, to wait till after the flick. I think that the odds of a three hour movie living up to a twelve issue maxi-series is somewhere between slim and none. I think if I could I would watch the flick for what it is, then read the comic and realize what the story really is. A tale that was meant to be a good comic, not any other medium.
And that, good sir, is my two cents.

It was a good book dude, don't get me wrong. As you say Alan Moore being himsel, but it was a little forced i think. I don't get the feeling he really cared about the character to be honest. It feels a little forced, I don't know if this is just because it was his first American series or whatever, but it's a liitle half arsed know what I mean?
D'you know what was one of my biggest gripes with this book? The colouring! It wsa just awful! Too bright contrasted with too dark. I would love to see it with new colours!

YES! I finally got a hold of this (sold out for so fucking long) and finished it yesterday.
LOVE LOVE LOVE. But my only qualm was that in some places it lost the run of itself and so the coolest part of the story (the tournament) felt a little rushed.

I have been telling my friends that have not read it yet, to wait till after the flick. I think that the odds of a three hour movie living up to a twelve issue maxi-series is somewhere between slim and none.
I don't know, man. Although 300 was an excellent panel-for-panel re-creation, everyone who has read Watchmen I think will agree that it is indeed nigh-on impossible to harness most of whats in the comic.
I'd recommend reading it first, just so there's nothing else influencing your experience.
Still, postitively spooged myself when I saw the Watchmen trailer for the first time. Very excited.
Oh, Aaron, do you know where I can get Killing Joke in town? Chapters ain't got it, Sub City ain't got it, Forbidden Planet ain't got it, and the Comic Book shop in Temple Bar ain't got it.

They may be old revelations but I found the changes to certain characters refreshing. I knew nothing of Harveys surgery, or Luthor as President. I like the relationship with Selina, and the fact the Riddler now knows Batman's identity.
I also think Hush is a villain that would suit Nolan's grounded reality.

The relationship with Selina is over by the time the series is done, Harvey's surgery was undone almost immediately after and the Riddler thing was thrown out the window long ago.
But yes, the idea of "Hush" would be fairly grounded.

book |boŏk|
noun
1 a written or printed work consisting of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers : a book of selected poems | a book on cats | [as adj. ] a book report.
• a literary composition that is published or intended for publication as such a work : the book is set in the 1940s | I'm writing a book.
How does a work of sequential panels bound in the center not qualify. It fits the definition. So by not excepting this small fact, the dissenter comes of as an elitist prick.

Now you are just being mean.
Knowing the kind of person you are, I know you are just busting balls, but this sentiment is out there and it infuriates me. A lot of comic readers are massive readers,
I just like heroic fiction. In my mind there is no difference of validity to the existence of either Peter Parker or Holden Caulfield.

At least Marvel is taking risks. If Final Crisis is ret conned I will be happy because you know who deserves a better death. He's in 12 pages of the entire fucking run then they kill him in the last two pages after he hasn't appeared in the last three issues.
I loved Final Crisis, and I have to be honest, Marvel comics just don't do it for me. I'm not one of those 'I'm a DC' guys who hates everything Marvel. I read Marvel, but they only produce stuff I would actually buy myself like once a year. Risks don't always equal quality.
That said Final Crisis was a huge risk for DC, I mean how easy is it to just write it off as Another Crisis? Doing another was a risk, one which was like marmite to many readers ie, you either love it or hate it. Which is why its such a risk.

That's like the third time you two have started bickering after Aaron responds to me. Anyways, Marvel needs to put reins on some their writer's I agree. The ret con is getting fucking annoying. I know that I called for Final Crisis to be ret conned out of canon but that's because it was shit. From a business stand point, the big events have been a very good idea for Marvel. They're greatly outselling DC. Also, the stories are executed better with the story encompassing every single book instead of a just a run of 7 issues.

I am a bigger DC fan than Marvel. Overall I did like FC, I just don't like the death within it. I think that they also should of made it bigger than 7 issues. For how big of a deal it was I don't think they made it big enough.

FC WAS a lot bigger than 7 issues. The tie-in's to the arc add up to almost 30 comics, such as;
Batman #682-683[30]
"DC Universe" #0
"DC Universe: Last Will and Testament"[28]
Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds #1-5[13]
"Final Crisis: Rage of the Red Lanterns" (one-shot)[31][12]
"Final Crisis: Requiem" (one-shot)[10]
"Final Crisis: Resist" (one-shot)[11]
Final Crisis: Revelations #1-5[14]
Final Crisis: Rogues' Revenge #1-3[15]
"Final Crisis: Secret Files" (one-shot)
"Final Crisis: Sketchbook" (one-shot)
"Final Crisis: Submit" (one-shot)
Final Crisis: Superman Beyond #1-2
Justice League of America (vol. 2) #21
Many of these were intergral to the reading of FC, e.g. Revelations and Superman Beyond. And Grant Morrison wrote a fair few whilst supervising others to maintain continuity. FC is much bigger than it's core 7 issues. Read a few of them and it might sate your thirst for more.
I tell you what mate. Honestly I could talk about this storyline for years! :D

Can somebody tell me how many issues there are of The Crow? I have it on my hard drive (don't worry, I'll buy it if it's as good as everyone says) and it says there are ten. But then I looked at the writer and it said it was John J. Muth. I always thought James O'Barr did the art and story. The I looked it up on Wikipedia and I saw this.
In 1999, Image Comics released a new comic series of The Crow, based on the original comic book. It ran for ten issues, ending in November of that year.
I thinking that's the one I have but I don't know if it's just a reprint of the original series or a completely new story.

Loeb tried to make it somewhat of a mystery about who Hush truly was, kinda like with the Long Halloween, but they failed and left the reader (me, at least) just confused and disappointed. It was great art, but Jeph kinda let me down with the story.

Agreed. With mystery, often less is more. If you send people on too many side tracks, they often forget what they were trying to figure out in the first place. I had a hard time differentiating between the actual reveals that did take place and the wild goose chases.

I would have actually been much more satisfied with the idea that it was Jason Todd back from the dead in some way rather than the last minute addition of Clayface to the story.

Red Son is a fantastic comic, probably the best of the 'Elseworlds' series, although I do like the 'Gotham by Gaslight' where we have a Victorian Batman searching for Jack the Ripper. There was a sequel which had a more steampunk-feel where Batman fought the Jules Verne 'Master of the World' character.
I want a Victorian Batman/League of Extraordinary Gentlemen crossover where Batman fights Mr. Hyde... Of course, I also want a million pounds.

I was interested in that but is it super-laden with continuity? I don't want to have to read an encyclopedia of every thing that's been going on in the Marvel Universe just to enjoy one storyline.

Nah, its nothing like that. Just know a few things that have gone on recently like, for instance, Hulk is bad and some other things that people might not be sure about like only Thor and Beta Rey Bill can lift Thor's hammer. The story itself is brilliant and issue six has one of the greatest reveals that I've ever seen.

Question: Who would you cast as Yorick, Dr. Mann and 355?
My Picks:
Yorick: Zachary Levi or (strangely enough) Topher Grace
I think both of them could pull of the humor and vulnerablity that you need for Yorick, though Levi might be too tall at 6'3". Sadly I hear a lot of talk about Shia LeBouf (*shudder*) Topher might do well, but I hope he doesn't pull another venom.
355: Naomie Harris
She was my first thought, after 28 days later she could do a damn good job. I hear a lot of people saying Gina Torres, but she's might be a bit old to play 355. Other than her was that chick from Grindhouse...I don't know maybe.
Dr. Mann: Yunjin Kim.
I can't think of anyone else really. Sun is perfect.. Oddly enough, Ming Na might be good. Michelle Yeoh is perfect for her mom though...(Grace Park as Toyota = Kick Ass)
Alter: I actually see Eva Green pulling this one off, I might be way off base, but she can get that icy cold thing going.
Hero: I'm gonna go with general consensus that I've seen that Emily Blunt would do quite well.
And of course. Joss Whedon directing.
Aaron
03-23-2009, 05:18 PM
Topher would be a good pick for Yorrick actually.
According to IMDB Pro http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800273/ and Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y_The_Last_Man
DJ Caruso is directing which means Shite LeBeef could be playing the role... yikes.
