Let's face it. At some point in your high school career, someone has told you that you cannot do something because of your age. They use many excuses-- that fact that you are under eighteen, the fact that you are a student, that while at school, you give up your rights, primarily because it is a public institution. It has to me, recently, In fact. The High school I attend is not very lenient with these rules. While a public school, and our "privilege" to wear whatever we want (within reason).

Launching into my first point:
Wordplay is used to confuse the issue
I quote the following from the Student handbook (our rulebook essentially):
"Students of the [school name] Community Schools have the right to exercise their freedom of speech as protected by the First amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Recognizing this right, as well as the special characteristics of the school environment, the Board of Education adopts this policy to establish standards to regulate a student's distribution of outside material on school property. Permission does not imply approval of the material's content by the district or it's representetives.
Now, I would like to address several point in the above:
A)Special Characteristics of the School Environment: What is special about the school environment, especially that of a high school? While an opposing point may be that there are 3 or 4 (perhaps five in other areas) age groups involved, it may be--prudent--to conduct censorship, much like the movies require carding to watch R- rated movies. While a valid point, the fact that the school turns on CNN every day at lunch defeatt his point, due to some of the 'offensive' covering of certain stories, like Sadaam's hanging.

B)Regulation of a student's distribution of outside material: The first amendment states:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
We pay taxes to use public schools. Hence, they are making a law against such right

C)Permission does not imply approval
How so? What constitutes the lack of permission to distribute such material? I quote:
Students seeking to distribute outside material on district property shall submit a copy of the material to the principal for review and written approval before distribution, together with a completed review from which require the following information
a. Name(s) of person(s) responsible for the distribution of the material
b. Name(s) of person(s) or group(s) (whose membership is recognized by the school) publishing the material
c. Brief description of the material
Now, why does it say that we must submit a copy of said material to the principal in order to obtain his approval, which they stated was not necessarily required. It is because students have no rights. I could argue that we do not have the right to life, simply because we do not have the right to the freedom of speech.

Expect more to come.

Expect those who will speak.

Those who will stand.

Those who will fight.

We pay taxes to use public schools. Really? How much in taxes have you paid since your first year in high school . I've got no problem with you being pissed off. I went to a school that had a hair and dress code. No piercings(girls ears, okay). Guys couldn't have facial hair. Hair could not touch the ears, eyebrows, or the collar of your shirt. Belts were mandatory, no shorts, flip-flops, sandals, tank tops, and shirts had to be tucked in unless they were T-shirts(and no questionable shit on the shirt, ie., most of today's concert shirts would get you sent home). But, guess what? If it's a public school, they have the right to run it however the hell they deem fit. As long as the school board isn't fucking up any "major" laws, they can do whatever the fuck they please. I haven't cut more than an inch or two off the length of my hair since I graduated. And don't get me started on belts. And getting to your point, one kid that tried to fight the dress code(got a lawyer) got suspended, and finally expelled. So, here's the deal, as long as your going to "their school", the only rights you have are the one's they say you can have. :(

Good luck fighting "City Hall". ;)

Keep fighting the good fight man. Any more, if I think about high school the first thing that comes to mind is a conversation from Dazed and Confused.

PINK: Well, look. All I'm saying is that if I ever start referring to these as the best years of my life, remind me to kill myself.

DON: Well all I'm saying is that I want to look back and say that I did it the best I could while I was stuck in this place. Had as much fun as I could when I was stuck in this place. Played as hard as I could when I was stuck in this place. Dogged as many chicks as I could when I was stuck in this place.

I felt the same as Pink but Don's outlook is the way I now wish I had approached high school.

The more I watch, the more I love Linklater.

Now I know I have not payed taxes (not eighteen yet), However, the fact that it is a public school is what makes this an injustice. If it was private, where my family would pay 10-15 grand a year for me to attend, then this is to be expected. The First amendment and constitution is what we base our "Major laws" off of buddy.

...public schools...

First off, your parents should be bitch-slapped for that.

And second, I agree with By-Tor... How much have you paid in school taxes?

Another question, what are you trying to say that the school won't allow you to? How are they violating your "freedom of speech"?

School dress codes and restrictions on flyers and posters and pamphlets are there to minimize distractions because school is a place where you're supposed to be learning the basic curriculum to get by in the world, not protesting war or global warming, or participating in the systematic defloration of virgins, or dressing like a hipster-doofus wannabe or a whore. (Of course, you're going to to a public school, so even then, if you focused completely on the curriculum, you'd still be lacking said skills upon graduation.) There'll be enough time for protests, dry humping your girl/boyfriend and wearing hoochie-mama clothes and playing cool pimp when you get out on your own. 'Til then you're a child, a minor. Do what your elders say.

(By the way, before anyone goes apeshit, I attended public school myself. Just look how I turned out... )

My friend, monkey man, My generation is going to inherit the world. My generation is going to be the ones to clean up the mess left by those before us, and if no one is going to start discussing the things that matter, then no on eiwll. You see, the mere fact that we cannot utilize the rights that we are guarenteed is wholly evil. Simply because we are minors is no reason to infinge upon our rights.

How old are you, dude?

You still didn't answer my question- what set you off on this crusade for the rights of minors? What did you get busted for at school?

As to your generation "inheriting" the world- that makes me very afraid. You're having a hard time with grammar now, how do you expect to run the world? Just make sure when you guys are taking care of everything, you remember to wipe my old ass.

You have to Fight, For your Right, To Party. Kick it.

One day, you will be driving by the High School, and you will see some kids, and you will get angry for no reason, and thats when you will know that ANYONE 18 and Under is most likely a fool.

One day I am going to be driving around, see someone who is between 20-25 and think "What Fucking Moron"

How do you think 100 year old people feel. Everyones a Moron to them, expect that 112 year old guy, but fuck him, he doesnt even know his own name and can only eat pudding.

Also High School Career? Come on. You go for 4 years, you stay awake, and hopefully you turn enough in that you graduate.

I enjoy jumping on a bandwagon from time to time to support a cause and getting off soon afterward, but if you had ANY idea how difficult it is to accomplish ANYTHING in school as a teacher, you would have never logged on to Movie Poop Shoot for the first time, or taken your head out of your books. We TRY to tell you that you are being stupid talking like you do, and that it won't fly in the real world, and you come back with the same old arguments. Yesterday a Hungarian kid tried to tell me in broken English that a dog ate his homework. Dude, you negated yourself by coming here. You are a walking cliche'. "Minors are the new homosexuals". Pssh. Go do your homework. And no, I didn't mean that in a "come back here and comment kind of way, because we're actually encouraging your deep thought processes and desire to read more of what you have to say" kind of way. Really, GO DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

The fact is that most kids your age have no idea how to be responsible.....is why you are being forced to. The fact is that kids are coming to school armed....is why they need to see your waist line. You should read the constitution a bit more my young friend, the government has the "right" to censor anything that could be offensive to other people and to ensure the safety and security of it's citizens, when in a public institution or on public airways. You see, the problem with having rights, is that other people have them too. Like the safety and security of you and your classmates is more important to us than whether or not you like what you have to wear to school. And the right for a parent to send their child to a school where kids are not wearing shirts with obscene lyrics or photos on it, is more important than your right to wear that shirt.

Do I believe that they take it too far, sure I do. But like Mark said, Learn while you are in school, learn a lot, become a lawyer, a doctor, or get on a school board. Be responsible for other peoples lives for a while, and then see if you sing the same tune. And if you do? Then do something about it.

Oh, and if you are not 18 you have no rights. Which is why, unless you kill someone or do something incredibly stupid, you don't get treated like an adult under the law. I am not trying to talk to like you are stupid, but you have a lot to learn yet. Which is why you are in school, stop worry about the stupid things. This is one of those stupid things. You seem like a smart young person, go and become smarter.

By the way, with the nasty mouths, shit work ethic, and horrible attitude's that the people of your generation have. I think the youth of today are not nearly censored enough.

I didn't like the way my high school was ran either, but did I complain? Yes...everyday, and frequently to teachers (because they didn't like how it was run either), but I just did my homework, got good grades, graduated 6th in my class with a 3.5 GPA. Don't worry about high school, it's just 4 years of your life spent following the rules of others until you get to college, then you can do whatever the fuck you want. Of course if you're paying 13 thousand or more a year to go there, what you want to do will probably be homework....and strangers....and abuse substances of many varieties. Plus, there are all kinds of groups you can join in college full of people that share the same ideas and values as you do. Now, excuse me, I'm late for the anime club meeting (haha just kidding, I'm not THAT much of a nerd...I do like anime though).

the ironic thing is: I don't really watch anime.

The first school, I was there as the "techie" who hooked the computer up to the tv and unplugged the computer from the internet and pushed the input button and did other EXTREMELY DANGEROUS PROFESSIONAL WORK. Everyone loved me, because I have an enormous penis! That's right! My penis is at least 12 times bigger than all of yours'...COMBINED. Like seriously, if the enormousness of my penis was the brightness of every star in the sky, you would all go blind from all the light. I DO NOT LIE

anyway...
This time I'm going because my friends go. I usually just sit at a desk and draw shit. However, if it's Princess Mononoke [however the hell it's spelled] or Spirited Away, I pay full attention to the movie, because if you don't want to watch any of Miyazaki's movies, you deserve to be shanked in the neck.

Ahhh Hahahahahahahahhahahahahahaha! Thanks friend Utemetsu, that was the best laugh i've had in a long long while. Heeheehee *snort* hahahahaha.

Just graduated from high school (albeit, barely)-- So, being out for only a couple of months, I'm obviously not much more mature than I was in June. But, I like to think that I've learned a few things about the fabled "real world" since then. (...Real World my ass, I'm currently going to school, living in an apartment on my parents dime-- I clearly don't know shit yet.)

Anyway, all through out school I was "fighting the good fight". You know the deal, "omigod, blocks on the school computers are oppressing our rights!", and all that garbage. And now that I'm out? I couldn't give any less of a shit. Why? Because it's just four fucking years... and your guidance counselor is right, it does go by pretty fucking fast. So, blow off your homework, drive around all hours of the night with your friends, and annoy the fuck out of your teachers-- Quit worrying about liberating your peers from the facist learning facility that is public high school.

It's like a rite of passage-- You don't want to break a billion years of tradition, centered around mind-blowing torture, and not getting laid, do you? Do you?

Samuel Clements once said it is better to be a quiet fool than to open your mouth and show everyone. I suggest you bide your time until you learn something, than parading around about how much of a dildo you are.

I am afraid this thread is going to start an exodus here again of high school idiots. They are attracted to stupid threads like this. I don't know how, but they are.

As a teacher, I hate blocks on the computers for simple things, but love them because retards like you are trying to get out of school as fast as you can so you can head on over to Jiffy Lube. Yep, you get to "fight the good fight" now by joining the J-Team. Cheers, ya douche. Now, rotate my tires already.

I love giving forebodings that I know will go unheeded. Just wait, dude. Don't reply--give it 6 months and a few kicks in the pants from your parents before they FINALLY cut you off. It's coming!!!

This whole thing reminds me of the quote from Swimming with Sharks: "I mean, if you're not a rebel by 21, you've got no heart, and if you haven't gone establishment by 30, you've got not brain."

Also, this reminds me "TIRED OF BEING HARASSED BY YOUR PARENTS? Act now! Move out, get a job, pay your own bills! Do it while you still know everything!"

Once you get out of high school and get some distance, you'll realize how little this matters in the long run.

Hey, we're both wrong. It's Clemens!

Also, phit and indigo, in a small way indigo agrees with me, but in a larger way (let me quote):

And now that I'm out? I couldn't give any less of a shit......So, blow off your homework, drive around all hours of the night with your friends, and annoy the fuck out of your teachers............the facist learning facility that is public high school.

I think you're just being a douche. All these kids who think public schools are "the Man" and you shouldn't participate, "just screw all those Nazi pigs", well I think you're a punk. I went to a private school that was like that. I enjoyed some things about it, but I would have been really happy to have had the chance to do things and join clubs and go on trips like you did. And now as a teacher, I don't see the connection you're making either. I just TOTALLY disagree about schools being that way. There are a LOT of people who shouldn't be educating kids, but what about all the cool people in school that made a difference for you?

I can't stand it when people deny that others are trying to make something good for kids and all they can do is whine how it's not better. Excuse me, dude, but even though you're out now (as you said, on your parents' dime), you sound spoiled. I don't think it's your fault in a way, but ultimately it is, and you're the only one who really has to learn that it is so.

Furthermore, I'm here now in a town where 10 year olds can get a pack of smokes and walk right up to school with one in their mouths, and NOBODY CARES. To the idiot who started the thread, that kind of freedom is really just the end result of having a pub on every street corner, and nobody caring whether you live or die. So, torch a flag and stop on your lil Freedom Fighter Constitution, because you can move here and find all that freedom you are being deprived of. Or, you can figure some stuff out. Realize people and rules are there for your safety and wellbeing.

...about the bullshit the kid was ranting about. In a nutshell, that says that I agree with everything you had just said. I'm sorry that slipped your grasp, sir.

And, wow, bro. There's this new thing-a-mah-jig out on the market now-- I think the kids are calling it sarcasm, or something like that. You should check it out, it's pretty nifty.

Hence, using this magical new wonder product, I referred to high school as the "fascist learning facility". See? Took a retarded statement, and attempted to make it funny. You know, 'haha'? Something that doesn't involve swinging your little judgmental cannon at anything that doesn't seem completely kosher?

And as for: "So, blow off your homework, drive around all hours of the night with your friends, and annoy the fuck out of your teachers............the facist learning facility that is public high school." -- Come on, man. Your profile says that your twenty-six. Don't tell me you've already forgotten what high school was all about.

Do you seriously mean to tell me that you loved every teacher? Obediently did every piece of homework assigned? Never broke a curfew with your friends? Jesus Christ, dude. No, I'm not saying that you should be raise hell-- I'm just stating what teenagers do.

Have you gone your entire life, thinking they referred to high school as the "best years of your life" because of classes? Of course not. It's called such, because of the friends that you make, the things you learn about yourself, and discovering who you (at least think you) really are.

Nowhere, in any of my posts, am I seriously stating that high school is "the man", or that it's a terrible institution. Because I loved high school, and I look back at the whole experience with rose colored glasses.

--But come on. If you don't hate it while you're in it, you've got something wrong with you. It's school, for Christ's sake.

...This is really just an overcomplicated way of stating: "I was being sarcastic, dude. Re-read my post with THAT in mind."

...And lighten the fuck up.

And as a P.S-- About the whole "living on my parents dime", and being spoiled bit. Yeah, I've been privileged. But dude. I'm going to school full-time in Vancouver (..I actually LIVE in Connecticut)... Are you telling me that you payed for college, full blown, straight up, by yourself? I'm sorry, I couldn't do that. It's taken a student loan, all the money I saved from working, and yeah, some help from my parents. So sue me. I just turned eighteen, damn it.

But, dude: Don't reply--give it 6 months and a few kicks in the pants from your friends before you FINALLY get a sense of humor.

...And lighten the fuck up.

Pardon me, if I don't know you that well after 20 posts. There are people that come here to spam us and wait to spam us after they have posted 20 times, so excuse me for THAT. I'll read what you say with your personality in mind after I have seen more of what you say. In the meantime, I take WHAT you say at face value. Also, And, wow, bro. There's this new thing-a-mah-jig out on the market now-- I think the kids are calling it sarcasm, or something like that. You should check it out, it's pretty nifty. If you're going to insult me, make it more witty than that. I concede a little, if I don't begin to think of you as a moron first. Forgive my doing so, but I read some of your blog before I read anything else you had to say, and it all seemed to flow in the same vein. You write it, we've never met, assumptions happen. Don't blame me you come off that way, or that I have my experiences to share. I just so happen to think you are fine thinking that way, but you are going to change a lot how you feel, as well as this other guy will. I think both of you are smart, but you shoot off before you realize what you said isn't that insightful.

Also, everything I say about school is with shit-colored glasses. Don't tell me all this stuff like I don't know. And just so ya know, I think TK said it too, I NEVER looked back or thought at the time I would look back on those days as the "best". Never will. They were hellish, but some people made it worth the while, and I like to dwell on that.

If you mix sarcasm with real commentary, saying "What teens do" and then saying "go do ___" in a fit of terribly funny sarcasm, it just might confuse people, especially folks who don't know you.

Don't blow it out of proportion. I will summarize now for you: "You have some things to learn too, so be quiet and think about what you're saying."

I'm not saying that as someone who is 26, or someone who forgot what it's like. I chose to be a teacher [this may seem corny] after I thought a lot. I was inspired by kids and movies like The Breakfast Club. I'm all about my kids being real with me. BUT, there's a bigass difference between kids being punks and kids being real. And how do your parents and your dime all tie in? Well, as you said,
Yeah, I've been privileged.
It's not so strange for people from some walks of life to pay the whole way. YES, it HAPPENS! And when most people take out a loan, it's in the plural. If you are privileged, don't play it down like you're from the wrong side of the tracks. If you are rich, say so. If you haven't been changed by that, say so. DON'T point your fingers at me though. I don't think you have earned the right to give me a laundry list of reality checks just yet.

You know what I've learned from being in really poor schools for a while? It's that the lot of kids who mouth off all the time don't have the biggest problems. It's hardest getting kids who have SHIT to ask for help. Excuse me if I don't shed a tear for ALL you've been through.

I guess my overall summary is this: "I don't like loudmouth malcontented kids with silver spoons in their asses." I do like your ability to summarize. I think I will assimilate it into my posting style.

But, dude: Don't reply--give it 6 months and a few kicks in the pants from your friends before you FINALLY get a sense of humor.

FINALLY, again, I'd recommend you stick around for a while before you go mouthing off. AGAIN. If I take this seriously, that's my damn business. It shows your level of maturity that you think it's nothing AND it shouldn't be anything to anyone else. That thinking will get you EVERYWHERE in life. Keep it up!

But sadly I was/am a slacker.

I procrastinated my way through high school, and I was damn good at it. Graduated with a 3.5 GPA got a 26 on ACT (I just made the minimum requirements to be an honors student in college, bitchin'!) I once told my d-bag world geography teacher that I took his class because it was an easy A. He spent the rest of the year trying to get me to do poorly, but I'm too awesome. Just to make him more angry I told him I never read the chapters, which was true. He nearly had a stroke. He didn't teach at all, he just spent whole class hours complaining about how disrespectful and lazy students are and how they all think they deserve better grades than they were getting. So, instead of being my normal self, I just acted like a disrespectful lazy asshole because he treated every student as such anyway, might as well take advantage of it. I got an A in the class anyway.

That's not really a bad repressed memory so much as a "God I hated that awful d-bag"

I have also sliced my thumb with a macheti (sp?), accidentally stabbed my hand with a pair of scissors, slipped on a garbage bag and had to get stitches in my knee, burned my hand taking a pizza out of the oven, gotten a toothpick jammed into my toe, dislocated a toe by accidentally kicking a folding chair (this one was the day before golf regionals...that was not pleasant), and my personal favorite, worn the skin off the palm of my hand while trying to beat the tug of war mini game in Mario Party, then kept playing after putting on some gauze and a glove.

That is the best photo to post of yourself.

I want a photo like that, or one where I am riding a Robot, shirtless, holding a weapon, and with a Woman holding onto my waste.

Did I mention it needs to be foggy?

HAHAHA!! Oh god, I read this at work, and nearly died. I don't want to have another outburst of laughter like I did last week when I heard the radio in the next office say "if we really try, we can make 40 thousand people come." Or like when I was not doing my work and watching some canadian educational children's show called TumbleTown Tales...which may be the funniest show ever.
