I just wonder how long it will be before Kennedy, Kerry, Clinton (either one), or Gore ask for a National Day of Mourning for the loss of one of their most revered people?
When I left work last night- right about the time Saddam was shaking hands with the Devil, some jackass was rather loudly wondering when Bush and Cheney were going to be hanged as they "killed seven million people." He went on and on and proclaimed Rumsfeld to be even worse...
I wanted to punch him in the throat.

Seven million? Just where are all of these people supposed to be? He is probably the only non-employee of Air America Radio that actually listens to it.

Hitler only killed 6 million people, for Pete's sake and those were special made camps of death.
This was the same cat who told me that we aren't taxed enough and that no one is entitled to a paycheck- that anything we "earn" (he actually used finger-quotes when telling me this) should be put into one big account and redistributed according to our needs...
In other words, he's a communist.
I still want to punch him in the throat.
But as to the big news of the day, I'm already seeing reports on how this was a bad thing, the execution. The Vatican has condemmed it (of course) and the media is going on and on already how this will only serve to divide the Iraqis furthur and we should have had compassion and we had no right and blah blah blah...
But like ratm said... good riddance! He was tried in an Iraqi court, found guilty by Iraqi citizens, and then executed by the Iraqi people. This is what the Iraqis wanted.

I'm already seeing reports on how this was a bad thing, the execution. As a general rule I don't dig capital punishment here in the states in part because of our obvious inability to mete it out fairly and with a sufficient certainty that the executed was actually guilty.
In this case though, I have no problem with it. The guy was certainly guilty. It goes a long way towards some semblance of stability in Iraq. As long as he was alive there was a chance that he would someday regain power. With him positively out of the way, a lot of people who were afraid or who harbored hopes of returning to their former status under him are now rethinking their position in the new Iraq.

Just a quick question, and not meant to offend, but are you not against the war?

I won't speak for Ratm but I think you can be against the war and still not sad to see Sadaam dead as the proverbial doornail. I know I am.

I wholeheartedly agree with Afghanistan as that was a clear cut case. I do not completely agree with the reasons for going into Iraq, but I will support it, because we are in it. I think that if we just wanted to create a regime change, we could have just sent some snipers into Iraq and let them take care of Saddam and his cronies.
However, I am a full supporter of the Death Penalty, especially when it comes to executing one of the world's biggest butchers; ranked right up there with Hitler and Stalin.

Great. We all know where this leads. First, he and Satan will try and rule the world and then he'll be building WMD's in heaven.

I think there is an episode of South Park that fits into just about any life situation.
Maybe we should contract Iraq out to the Ethiopian military. They seem to have the balls to actually fight the enemy as opposed to worshipping at the altar of Political Correctness.

Is it just me or does the fact that they hung (hanged?) him seem odd. I was talking it over with some friends and we were all baffeled that there was not some high-tech way to dispose of a human. I mean, how much did we spend on the war? How much did that length of rope cost? Did you see some of the cost estimates for the polonium 210 used to kill that double agent? Just wondering if anyone else found that odd.

I thought they give the condemned a choice of a few things and they choose.

...The Vatican has condemmed it (of course) ...I think they have figured out it's a good idea to condemm most everything since they took a lot of flack for forgetting to condemm some other things in their past...ahem...the Nazis...ahem...

He was executed in Iraq, not the US. They do things differently.
Plus, hanging is a very quick death.

Heeeeyyoooooo!!
Seriously, yeah. What's interesting is how the Islamic world is trying to equate the Pope with W. I think that's comical. In my opinion, anyone who has ever stood for Israel will forever be hated by most of the Muslim world, period, and it seems like they don't really distinguish between us. I think that's what makes them hate us all, Spain, England, any Western power really. We all have a pro-Israel stance.
I will admit I am baffled by how they are so antagonistic toward each other though [and spare me the Catholic-Protestant paradigm, please]. I mean, taunting the dude as he dies and videotaping it on your cell? Jimminy Jillikers. Of course we Christians have our tainted records, but I never could get how they did the stuff they did. Probably because I'm a Baptist and we were the ones who got burned all the time.
Anyway... to keep with the theme of the thread, to quote the Joker from the first Batman [Michael Keaton Batman], "Frankly, I'm glad you're dead." I wish I could say it to him, and I think he deserved to suffer more.
I will say I'm proud of America for being above board about everything. Iraqi soldiers decided to smuggle a phone in, their business. I am with some of you about the how and why and disapproving to a degree about the war in Iraq, but we're there now, and I support our men and women, and I'm glad when things are done the right freaking way, instead of making a mess for the world to talk about.
Also, this may be turning into a rant of sorts, but after living over here for a short while, I have come to the conclusion that a lot of Europeans are pussies. I'm tired of hearing people talking bad about America, people who live right on the cusp of the Islamic world, where remnants of castles sacked time and again by Muslim invaders still stand as testament to their ancestors' devotion to Christianity. I don't know how you all have decided, but I believe this is a global religious war, and it won't end until Israel is gone. Muslims don't care about Christians as long as they don't defend Israel. This is NOT going to end, and people in Europe are pansies.
When it comes time to defend their asses, "who they gonna call"?
And an even better question, when it comes time to defend our asses, who are we gonna call? God knows, I am praying for another Ron Reagan to lead us. America needs some boldness. I'm praying we don't get a pansy in office in '08. We can't turn a blind eye. We can't be cowards and turn away from the difficulties that face us.
Finally, has it ever occurred to you all [this is my theory], that when Japan "woke the sleeping giant" by bombing us, we have not been able to turn our backs on the world. I for one don't trust anyone except England to help our asses in a pinch, and I fully expect most of our allies to eventually cave. I wish we could go back to isolationism though. I wish we could just be happy America, living and working and doing well, and nobody bothering us, and we not having to police the globe because it's no longer safe. I know that's pie in the sky dreaming though, as I said.
I still believe the world must be safe for democracy, and America, I'm glad to say, doesn't puss out when the going gets tough. I just hope we vote that way in '08.

On a lighter note....
It appears that Natural Selection has once again prevented yet another drain on society from making it to an age where he/she will actually become a drain on society.
It appears a 10y/o kid in Houston, TX watched a news cast with his uncle about Saddam's execution. When the news was over, he asked his uncle why Saddam was hung. His uncle told him it was because he was a bad mad.
What did the boy do? He went into his room to research how the hanging took place. Yeah, you guessed it....he actually hung himself from his bunk bed.
Okay, not really a lighter note, but the gene pool just got a bit stronger.
HEY! I ADMIT OPENLY THAT I AM AN ASSHOLE.
