Since this is the DVD section, and not all movies we rent are worth their own thread...here's a spot to look at what we are all watching at home right now and comment on them. Yay or nay. Damn that sucked. I wanted to take it to prom it was so good. You get the picture. Comment on what everybody else thinks too. We might get come good recommendations from each other. I will go by my NetFlix rating system which is this...

1 star - Hated It!
2 star - Didn't Like It
3 star - Liked It
4 star - Really Liked It
5 star - Loved It!

I will begin.

Here is what I have at home now:
1) The Matador
2) The Notorious Bettie Page
3) A Good Woman
4) The Benchwarmers

My last set of movies was:
1) The Sentinal - (3 star) Better than I expected. I only rolled my eyes because Eva Longoria has no plot purpose in this movie and she works secret service detail in stillettos. Everything else was good.

2) Lucky # Slevin - (4 star) Great dialogue, exciting plot turns and twists, wonderful set decoration. Usually John Harnett makes me want to nod off, but he was good here. There was not as much involvement of Bruce Willis than you are led to believe in the marketing.

3) Posideon - (2 stars) It would get one star except Josh Lucas was running around in a 1.5 hour wet tuxedo shirt contest that I approved of. Other than that this was an implasible, boring waste of time and energy. It's hard to make an action movie boring, but they did it.

4) Syriana - (4 stars) I was not a fan of Traffic. In fact, it bored the crap out of me. I found this movie to be much more interesting, thought provoking, worth the watch. The acting was great.

No. I blame the fact that I watched it so late. It was SO overhyped by the time I saw it that it could never live up to what I had heard. Basically it wasn't the second coming of jesus via film.

That is why I try to see some big movies right away now, so I can get my own impression without hearing everybody else overdo it.

The Bette Paige movie is fantastic. It's really, really good. And Gretchen Mol looks a lot like Paige.

The movies I have on my Q to ship to The Smurf household is:

1. Kinky Boots
2. The Not. Better Paige
3. Thank You For Smoking (which was awesome and deserves many, many viewings)

Zens, want a new Netflix buddy!? :D

I changed my Q and put Kinky Boots way down the list, since Kathy didn't enjoy it and I really wanted to watch the Better Paige and Thank You For Smoking films sooner than I thought.

Next on my list is 'The Office' seasons 1 and 2 and 'Project Runway' seasons 1 and 2.

1. The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things - This is based on that book by JT Leroy (aka the original James Frey) and the guy that is rumored to have stalked Armistad Maupin enough to have him write The Night Listener.

2. A Prairie Home Companion - Another good book from way back and I love Robert Altman so I have hopes for it.

The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things: 3 stars - Liked It. You can't imagine that the woman who is directing and starring in this movie is the same girl from XxX. It does a very good job with the matieral, which in this case is extremely difficult. It's disturbing and sad and well done.

Thank You For Smoking - 4 A lot of fun and a way to root for the cigarette companies

Uncensored Roast of Denis Leary - 3 moderately funny, but I expected more

I had a hard time separating the movie from Sophia's life in that and just found it unseemly. However, I liked Broken Flowers quite a bit so it's not Murray being serious that bothered me.

Shop Girl was far too slow and I really didn't care for any of the characters. I wanted to shut it off after 45 mins, but toughed it out.

Brick - 3 stars (Liked It) If you are into Film Noir and want to see a pretty decent job of teens handling that style of dialogue this is a good movie. It occasionally plays with it's own absurdity [look for the scene filmed in an Astrovan with a working lamp], but doesn't deviate often it's serious nature. Much like all film noir it requires VERY close attention to follow the plot, and even then the twists and turns can get muddled together.

Wow - got some stinkers and some decent ones:

Lady in the Water - 2 stars (Didn't Like It)
I am not sure what this movie is about, but I think it has something to do with fish, global warming, and the kind of wierd dudes who run apartment complexes.

Little Miss Sunshine - 5 stars (Loved It)
Hilarious, heart-warming, and sums up every fear I have about putting children in beauty pagents.

Wicker Man - 1 star (Hated It)
How can the first one be so scary and this one be so boring? I actually fell asleep for 30 min. of the middle and didn't miss a thing. Even Nic Cage's acting was bad...I think he should stick to wanting to be The Green Lantern or something.

IceAge (The Meltdown) - 3 stars (Liked It)
I didn't enjoy the first Ice Age as much as other people, but I did enjoy this one.

Scoop - 1 star (Hated It)
Woody Allen needs to get his head in the game. He is destroying all credibility. Even worse he made Scarlett Johansen look like a dork which is tough to do. After Matchpoint (which was FANTASTIC), this was the kind of movie a kid would make with his friends in the garage.

Watched Broken Hearts Club and Solaris (Clooney version).

Broken Hearts Club was meh at best. I expected more from the cast. It also had one of my pet peeves which is movies about the gay community having a scene talking about the lack of movies about the gay community. There was one good quote that sums up my dating experience in LA. "It's a bunch of 10s looking for an 11 and on my best day I'm a 6."

You know how Soderberg is hit or miss? Yea, Solaris is a big giant miss. LAME. LAME. LAME. So didn't care. Took forever to get going and even then it didn't go very far. Also, wasn't this movie The Sphere?

Best in Show has been taken off my queue since my roommate owns it. I'll watch it next time I'm in between movies.

Next up: Adaptation, The Omen and Rocketeer. Yes, I know my selection are extremely random.

Back when I was maybe 15-16, myself and a friend got really drunk on my parents' liqour when they were out for the night. This came on the TV at some ungodly hour and completely transfixed the two of us through a mixture of it's wretchedness and our intoxication.

I am with FanGirl and Jason of the 6-hour Firth-a-thon known as Pride and Predjudice the BBC version. I have seen it more times than I can count and I am not sick of it.

We watched a very interesting indie called "Loving Annabelle" last night. It's basically a story about a female teacher getting seduced by one of her female students.

I tried to make it thorough "Coversations with Other Women" because I love Aaron Eckhart and Helena Bonham Carter. This is one of those movies that requires a lot of attention because it's shot in double screen and is essentially ALL dialouge. It wasn't condusive to the atmoshphere at the time because we had a group watching it. I can't really judge either way.

I saw Idiocracy last week. I was a tad bit underwhelmed only because watching other people's blatent stupidity does get on my nerves in the real world...let alone on the screen.

When I got done watching it I thought it also quite scary because there is a real possibility that this movie could turn out to be accurate. It's The Bell Curve fast forwarded a few hundred years. The effects of a culture of reality TV, media control, ebonics, redneck slang, the rate of reproduction in the uneducated vs. educated, and our shambles of a school system are all prefect precursors to wrestling presidency. If you are movie buffs (like most of us on the boards are), it's worth renting "This Movie Is Not Yet Rated" and not just because Kevin has a speaking part in it. I had read a bit about the MPAA before, but this documentary exposes a lot about what the organization really does in the community and how their power is essentially unchecked.

Very cool stuff.

I always wondered why horror movies can get away with the most disgusting things and get an R but showing a woman having a realistic orgasm is NC17. Guess it's ok to rape and torture a woman but don't show her having a good time.

Blurb:
Kirby Dick's provocative documentary investigates the secretive and inconsistent process by which the Motion Picture Association of America rates films. Dick questions whether certain studios get preferential treatment, exposes the discrepancies in how the MPAA views sex and violence, and reveals the association's efforts to control culture. Interviewees include John Waters, Darren Aronofsky, Maria Bello, Atom Egoyan, Kevin Smith and more.

I think you're confusing us again because a) I just watched Idiocracy and This Film is Not Yet Rated. b) that's exactly what I said about Idiocracy.

As far as This Film is Not Yet Rated, it's just an okay documentary. One of the best pieces is actually a deleted scene with a ton of Kevin and Matt Stone talking about the more comedic moments with the MPAA.

Rocketeer - I loved this movie. 5 stars. This is a whole lot of fun to watch. Nothing terribly complicated in the plot, but the whole cast seems to have fun with a fun concept. Even though the movie was done in 1991, nothing seems dated except the actors looking awfully young. I highly recommend for kids of all ages.

Evening Star - You know what Randy says in Scream 2 about the rules of sequels about the higher body count? Apparently, it applies to dramas as well. I expected more since Terms of Endearment is such a good movie, but the character development just wasn't there. The plot seemed to be missing as well. All in all is was pretty crappy. DVD - [also will be copied in I just say...thread]
Marie Antoinette - Beautifully filmed, 3/4 of it awesome. 1/4 dragged with a bit too many long, silent montages where nothing happens...a Sofia Coppola trademark that she needs to get rid of. I usually despise watching Kirsten Dunst but not this time. She and Jason Swartzman were able to convey the strange affection that Marie and Louis had for each other in spite of their tragic circumstances and youthful mistakes. *Kind of a spolier* I thought it was interesting that the film ends right when they are exiled instead of taking you through the years before they were put to death (seperately).

Marie Antoinette was one of the most misunderstood characters in history, but her story is still relavant and a cautionary tale for what power propaganda and celebrity really have.

Running With Sissors- I have long been a fan of Augusten Burroughs and his memoirs. Starting with this book it makes it pretty obvious to anyone how he could end up in the emotional place he was in by the time "Dry" was written. I was suprised when I finally saw this movie because the trailer made it look like a comedy and it is most certainly NOT that. Granted, as all Borrough's works are, there are moments that are hilarious but it is a drama not a comedy.

They did the book justice. The acting is incredible, the characters are so well developed, and the matieral sticks to the original story. His life is one that is so unbelieveable that it had to be true.

An Unfinished Life - I can't stand Jennifer Lopez and I still liked this movie. That pretty much sums it up!

I haven't posted my netflix in here in a while so here's what I've been watching in the last few weeks:

Inside Man - While at least slightly more accurate to a hostage situation (not by much, but they had the negotiators actually be police and had them not running into the situation), it was still a pretty lame movie. Willem Dafoe was completely misused. The bad guys were lacking. Not very tense and if you actually watch the movie, you know how its going to all turn out and its not really that tense or interesting. I'm not a Spike Lee fan at all, but thought I'd give him a chance as this didn't seem like his usual preachy movies.

Jet Li's Fearless - Jet Li wanted to end his movie career on a good movie and I think this was a good choice. You really got to see all that he is capable of and then some. However, the movie itself was kind of poorly put together needed just a bit more of a kick in the plot line. It's definitely worth seeing for all the Jet Li goodness.

Backbeat - It was an okay movie. I learned a little bit more about the Beatles, but all in all it dragged quite a bit and I really didn't care much about any of the characters. There were tons of nods to the audience with references to future Beatle songs and albums not to mention the 30 seconds of Ringo we get to see. It's definitely not worth seeking out to watch.

Lovely & Amazing - It was neither. It was just a jumbled mess of characters in search of a plot. Sadly, they never found one nor were they interesting enough for us to even care. None of them go through any changes. All in all the movie was a complete waste of time and there is no reason to watch it. The performances were just okay. Catherine Keener is always good, but that isn't enough reason to sit through this mess of a movie.

Lady in the Water - This movie caught a lot of hell in the press when it came out. I will agree that it is a short story that has been stretched, but it's still a good story. I liked the movie well enough. I wouldn't rank it one of his best, but it was better than Signs. The characters were all great as was the acting. It is definitely a bedtime story. There was one joke a reviewer made which I admit is pretty funny: “M. Night Shyamalan casts the movie with his favorite actor – M. Night Shyamalan!”

My Super Ex-Girlfriend - Sure the movie had a lot of faults and was completely cheesy, but I still liked it more than I thought. Unlike other movies about a break-up, you actually see the entire relationship. It's formulaic, but still a lot of fun to watch.

Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein: The Legacy Collection - “My grandpappy used to work for your grandpappy. Of course, you know the rates have gone up.” It has been a very long time since I've seen either of these movies, but watching them just give me a greater appreciation for “Young Frankenstein.” Mel Brooks did an amazing job duplicating them. These movies were a lot of fun to watch, but sadly no where near as good as the original book. I still highly recommend watching these two and then “Young Frankenstein” as a mini-marathon.

Land of the Dead - Meh. I was expecting a little bit more. The gore was a bit much, but the plot line connecting the gore was pretty weak. I have high expectations for zombie survival movies having read “World War Z.” They did have a couple of interesting ideas, but all in all it was just mediocre. Nothing noteworthy about it.

The Island - I like action movies as much as the next person, but this was just too much action for me. It's a combination of “Logan's Run” and “Paycheck.” Both movies were better than this one. I think if it was done by another director, it might have been at least decent.

Prime - I don't think anyone told the movie that it was supposed to be a comedy as well as romantic. I watched the making of and the director said he really wanted to make it feel real. He did a good job at that which pretty much sucked all the movie comedy antics right out of it. I was expecting something a bit funnier and found myself quite bored and not really caring about any of the characters. The director also directed “Boiler Room” which was equally mediocre.

Rumor Has It - This is based on the idea that “The Graduate” was based on a real family in Pasadena and what would it be like if the adult children figured out that it was based on their family. Rob Reiner did a decent job and it definitely has its moments. Not something I ever need to watch again, but an okay way to spend the afternoon. Reiner did a good job incorporating a lot of the elements of “The Graduate” into the movie. It just needed to be taken a bit further than it was.

Funniest Moments of the Century - This is actually a 6-disc, 6-hour special. I've only watched the first hour. As a documentary goes, it's pretty lame. The material, however, totally makes up for it. It's fun to watch some of those classic routines not to mention some scenes I've never seen like Sammy Davis, Jr. on “All in the Family.” So funny.

Can you tell I've been home all week recouping on the couch from kidney stones?

Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein: The Legacy Collection

I've been trying to hunt down Son of Frankenstein for ages. Last time I checked I couldn’t find it anywhere. Saw it once in a box set, but, alas, I think that set was recalled/cancelled.

There is no way in hell that the steaming pile known as Paycheck is better than The Island.

Any Voyager fans out there? I have questions.

How did the Doctor end up with a 29th century holo emitter?

And where'd Kes go?

I could be wrong, cos it's been years since I saw it, but I think he got it during that (two-part?) episode with Ed Begly Jr. and Sarah Silverman in it.
The Voyager crew travelled back in time to modern day Earth. Begley played a Bill Gates-like character who somehow had access to 29th Century technology and was using it to create more powerful computers, making him rich. The doctor acquired the holo-emitter some time during this whole brew-ha-ha.

And where'd Kes go?
Voyager finally arrived in Borg space in the final episode of Season 3; "Scorpion Part 1" and the first episode of Season 4; "Scorpion Part 2". In these two episodes, the Borg were battling a speices called 8472 and were getting their asses kicked. Capt Janeway and the Voyager crew had a way of killing species 8472, so she made adeal with the Borg; they escort Voyager across Borg space and she will give them the technology. Anyways, Murphey's Law happened, things got screwed up, and a small contingent of Borg ended up on Voyager. One of them was 7 of 9. She ended up being separated from the collective and reverted back to mostly human form. Kes left the ship in the next episode; I guess you can't have two characters like 7 and Kes to compete for attention.

No, it's not. It's possibly the worst film I saw last year. Like Dawson's Creek with drug deals.
