I believe the whole Craig Charles fiasco happened after series 6 (ish) The reason for no movie is, although the script has been completed for a few years now, Naylor can't get the appropriate funding. If all else fails, he wants to film a one-off special to conclude the cliff hanger of series 8.

Yeh there was a fiasco after series 6. But in the summer of last year he got arrested for doing crack in the back of a car while his friend was taking pictures of him doing it. Anyway later on they was caught speeding and the police found the crack and the photo's and arrested him. He's now in jail for intent to supply. Well thats what it said on the news.

Can you be arrested for having a PHOTO of you smoking crack? That seems alittle iffy.

I don't remember what the story was, but didn't the season 8 finale end in a cliff hanger?

They should resolve it for total closure of the entire run. A one-off special perhaps, as the film doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

....and bring back Dwayne Dibley. Again.

A fairly excellent cliffhanger too. Even if that season was weaker than the very, very first.

I hoenstly thought season 8 was superb, 7 was the weaker one. Season 8 went back to te style of the first two, more about the being marooned somewhere (in the prison rather than just on the ship) and had some absolutely superb moments. The whole one with Rimmer thinking they were getting an appeal for their conviction where it turns out Lister is getting guitar strings is classic.

I must admit I haven't watched series 7 or 8 since they were originally on tv. So perhaps I should give them another chance.

I remember series 7 as the one where Rimmer went and was replaced by some bint as Konchanski (rather than Clare Grogan, who was HOT). And then series 8 was the one where 'nanobots' 'reconstitute' Red Dwarf, or something. I dunno, I don't think I even watched all of that one; I'd given up by that point. I seem to remember an episode where they have to play basketball or something against some other people, so they give them something to give them all a constant boner. LOL.

Bah. I've convinced myself the new one will be shit.

Nothing special in the first three minute. There was no explanation at the start. I agree the laugh track was missed too for me. There was also a bit of dodgy effects. That was better than I expected. I laughed a couple of times. And I agree that a laughter track was needed. It was also strange seeing them all looking older (Kryten excepted). Chris Barrie looked like he was wearing a corset under his Rimmer suit.

Had to avoid this like the plague as I was out on Friday night.

Legally acquired the first 2 eps and watched now. I'm actually really digging the way they are going about it. It feels the same as the TV show did but with a different twist on it that I think has been done quite well.

I'm indifferent to the laugh track not being there, but for some reason I reckon the DVD may have a laugh track option...just think it would be something they would do.

I thought it was a weekly thing, didn't realise it aired the next two nights, thankfully dave are re-showing all three in succession tomo-err tonight, which is just as well as I no longer seem to get the DL speeds I once had.

The last ep was brilliant. And I reckon viewing it all in one sitting on a DVD - as I'm sure they would cut it on DVD in that version, perhaps even extending it further - would make for extremely satisfying viewing.

The end was really good and does pave the way for new series.

Wiki says:

Doug Naylor has stated in an interview with Dave that he would like to make another series, but that "we would have to wait and see" how good or bad the reaction to "Back to Earth" was. He also stated that he would "never make a series 9," but he does want to make a series 10. He then went on to say that "that will make a lot more sense in future". The specials establish that two series occured after series eight that focused on the events that lead up to the mini-series. [57]

The viewing figures have been considered really successful for Dave so I don't see it being out of the realms of possibility for them to maybe bring it back. Maybe the BBC would jump on board to to help fund with a view to air also.

Which would be interesting I think.

Rob Grant wasnt involved in these episode. I was very underwhelmed.
Rob Grant > Doug Naylor.

I'm with Cooke; loved it.

There was a settling-in period, same with series 7 when you were getting used to everyone looking older and the ship changing in appearance. But once we reached episode two it got moving. Really it felt like one long episode...

**spoilers sort of**
I kind of guessed the second twist and did love the references to 'that' film. It made a nice little puzzle because the first twist would have just been a shocking cop-out, so I was quite pleased that they've left room to explore the 'missed out' seasons, and the SPLAT was exceptional. Arnie's rock n' roll moment.

Would like to find out someday how Rimmer escapes his cliffhanger in series 8 though.

Pronounce it Cuc, or they won't understand you. ;)

Of season one, or of the new three parter?

If its season one, then you have six seasons of gold ahead of you.

I'm still of the opinion season 8 is very underrated by many people! There's some classic moments in it!

I ended up watching the other two after all followed by the making of, thought they were great but then I havent watched any of the series since season eight aired and I couldn't remember any of it, I am going to get back around to it eventually. Defintitely was a slow starter with the first ep but I love it when characters 'break into reality' its worked wonders for Freddy Kruger, spider-man and the league of gentlemen.

Loved the little Rimmer minions from the Rimmer memorial tour too.

I watched all of season one and I feel better for it. Very awesome. Norman Lovett is great. Is it bad that when I saw him I thought, " Hey, that's the guy from Asylum"?
