The critics lied or were watching a different movie, because that movie was damn good. From start to finish, I was fully engaged. There is no get to know the characters first act- you the viewer are dropped in the action so jarringly that you might think the projectionist fucked up and started with the wrong reel. This movie builds and builds with a steady determiniation to the final climax which looked and sounded so convincingly real it got my blood pumping the way it did when I used to be a cop.
Some might say that this movie is too slow and drags on and on. I say those people went in to the theater expecting a two-hour version of the TV show. This is NOT the TV show. There is a Crocket and a Tubbs, and they do work undercover on the vice squad in Miami, but any other similarity I didn't see. (Of course it's been well over ten years since I've watched an episode) The film itself is dark and moody. The unbilled appearance by Katrina sucked me right back down into Florida: the four o'clock thunderstorms, the lightning. For a moment, I thought I could smell the rain-soaked air and the crisp ozone on the breeze. I believe D.K. Holm said in his review this was almot a silent movie- he was right. This movie would have played as well and probably more intensely if it only had a music track and sound effects. The characters moved with deliberation and purpose- almost nothing was wasted on the screen.
I highly recommend this film.

Absofuckinlutely loved it. As I mentioned in my response, in another thread, it is ADULT drama mixed with action... at the end. This is the way Rated-R movies should be made, none of this crappy a-tad-above-PG-13 junk we usually get.

This is how they used to make movies, before Hollywood execs caught wind that kids and stupid people were the target audience.

I will buy the DVD the second it becomes available.

I can't FUGGIN' wait for this movie. Michael Mann is, well...The Man, and he has never disappointed.
I rewatched Collateral two nights ago. It's a masterpiece!

"For all its big hair, dizzying pastels and unbuttoned, hairy chests, the TV show had joy and humor to it. All this movie has in common with its ancestor are speedboats, shotguns and drug-dealing Colombians."
-Scott Bowles, USA Today
I still can't believe that there are some critics who were dissapointed that the movie was not in the spirit of the show. How stupid are these people and how do they still have jobs? Did they really think Michael Mann's vision was to revisit and replicate a show that he worked on 20 years ago? It's Michael F'n Mann!!!

Anyways, I can't wait to catch this one in theatres sometime this week.

So, let me just say that Colin and Jamie are super sexy and I had many great dreams that night.

Aside that, I didn't think it was that great of a film. I was lost. There are lots of questions that weren't answered and the whole trailer park scene was laughable. (I could explain, but I don't want to put spoilers on it.) But yeah, it was very nice, dark and stylish and the camera angels were awesome. But, I didn't enjoy it. I might check it out again... who knows.

This film was an absolute doozie! One of Michael Mann's best.
I saw it on a fuggin' HUGE screen, and I was shocked at how good it looked, considering it was shot on DV. Before I saw it I was anxious about Colin Farrell. He hasn't done anything decent since Phone Booth, but Mann definitely knows just how to get the exact performance from his actors.. The gunfights were just too good...

I haven't seen it but I think John Holloway should have been Sonny since he looks better and he's Southern.

I would put this firmly into the "ordinary" category. Most of the time I wished they used subtitles for everyone, as I had massive problems understanding/hearing what they were saying a lot of the time. The plot was extremely thin and confusing. A couple of things that stuck out: (Possible Spoilers ahead) Weren't they supposed to be finding the mole within the FBI or whatever agency? Did that happen? Did I fall asleep and miss it? Also there was a scene at the end of cops storming a house which is empty. Whose house is it? And Colin's pornstar 'stache and hair? No idea what they were thinking on that one.

On the good side, the visual style of it was typically Mann and still effective.

It's been a week or two since I saw it, so I might be rusty, but I think it's the abandoned house of the main drug dealer - the one Crockett and Tubbs meet in the limo.
The actor's name is Luís Tosar

I'm not insane.
Shitest is not a word.
And Vanilla Sky was pretty good if you paid attention.
Judging from your grammar & profile, one could assume that the kind of entertainment you primarily enjoy is rather... simple. You prefer spectacular fight sequences, flashy effects, and grand fanfares over substance, subtlety, deeply involved story lines, and multi-dimensional characters. You prefer to make bold statements without much in the way of justification- 'My opinion is right because I say so.' Why did you not like Miami Vice? What made it the "shitest" movie ever? I might accept your disdain for it if you provided some reason for that disdain. If you can't back up your opinions with any fact or reason, you'll go through life regarded as an inconsequential blow-hard.

The only reason I could find to dislike Vanilla Sky was that Abres Los Ojos was better.

I hated Vanilla Sky with a fiery passion. So much so that I've repressed the vast majority of it and can't even explain why (Sorry JK). So I'm going to have to go with "'My opinion is right because I say so".

Not good enough. Go watch it again and get back to me. (Bet you didn't think you'd still be getting homework)

I was just talking about this last night. I didn't like Vanilla Sky either. I've blocked most of it as well. I remember not liking the point that everything ravelled at, but that's all I really remember.

Your right! Absolutly rigtht! Im new to this and am just giving my opinion with shity grammer!........Other than that i will give u the evidence "jkhulon73", any way the movie was literaly 2hrs and 30min of drug talk which was boring and 15min of action that WAS interesting. That is my opinion and i was not trying to judge your comments even though i did say "ARE YOU ALL INSANE!!!". Sorry about that mistake in my words and i have learnt to back up my opinion with evidence. Any way now to a end in my opinion it was one of the worst movies ever. By the way has anyone watched "Silent Hill", I thought it was to much like "The Ring".

What the hell are you implying by putting my name in quotes? It's my name- and it's been my name since 1973. JK Hulon. Recognize.

And no, you didn't say "ARE YOU ALL INSANE!!!" Here's your quote...

ARE YOU INSANE!!!!

When you respond directly to a post with that language, one will assume you're speaking directly to them.

And to address the use of "evidence"- That would imply that you are proving a fact wherein you are only attempting to strengthen your opinion and sway others to agree with said opinion. You should be dealing with reasons. And your reason actually proved my point from my earlier response to you.

I think that you've been conditioned by the studios as to what to expect out of a big Hollywood production. This movie, Miami Vice, was an R rated drama, made for adults. To quote Razorback- "This is the way Rated-R movies should be made, none of this crappy a-tad-above-PG-13 junk we usually get." You were probably expecting lots of loud explosions, a hip soundtrack featuring the bands of the weekend, and non-stop adrenaline. I don't know. You were rather vague with your "evidence"

Very rarely do I outright hate an art film, but Vanilla Sky was pretty meh. Yeah, I understood it, but nothing really shook me or suprised me. I think Eternal Sunshine was a way better look at how we dream and the value of our memories.

Anyways, I got off topic, actually I came here to ask if anyone had an idea on how Miami Vice cost $250 million to make. Because it took in around $60 mil and now there's a lot of pissed off execs. My only theory is that the movie has been in production limbo for years... the same way Superman Returns had already blown through $30 mil before Singer was even attatched. Any ideas?

Ok jkhulon73, I don’t know if you’re blind or have eyesight problems but i said “I’m new to this and am just giving my opinion with shity grammar". I was only giving my opinion and if you can’t except that bad luck, DONT READ IT!! Everyone is entitled to there own opinion; you had yours now it’s my turn. Also I apologized if i offended you but its not right for you to lash back at me for something that was un-meaningful, and was NOT directed at you as a attack.

I'm not lashing back because you hated the movie. I just want an honest reason why you think the film sucked. It pisses me off to no end when people say "it blows" and then when asked why they just say "because it blows." I don't care that you think it sucked- more power to ya. I just think people need to be held accountable for their opinions if they expect to get people on board with them.

Fine then I will put more detail in my writing to tell people why i thought the movie sucked. The movie had Colin Farrell, a well known actor who made a disgraceful movie (Alexander) and has now made another disappointing movie. He is a good actor with great talents but is just taking all the wrong scripts! Jamie Foxx is another awesome actor, he was a cast member in Stealth and Jarhead; Jarhead being a personal favorite of my own. In my opinion he stuffed up by acting in a movie which has 2hours and 20minutes of drug talk, 10 minutes of sex scenes and 15 minutes of action. I have seen shows of the old Miami Vice and they were hundred of times better than the new movie. Also the new Miami Vice had HEAPS of nice cars and boats, obviously costing millions of dollars to buy the toys and they didn’t even include one good chase scene on the boat. The only chase seen in the movie was situated on a highway and that was a really short scene. This movie was supposed to be entertaining and i did not fid it entertaining.

I don't agree with your assesment, but at least you gave a reason. That didn't hurt, did it? ;)
