Apparently JJ has studied the writing credits of Michael Bolton and dating history of Linda Ronstadt a little more closely than others of us...

32 which as a none appreciator of music has somewhat shocked me that I did remotely well. (sure I relied on several guesses but I knew at least 3 actual answers)

Define "rock" there, handlebar. . .I'm interested to see how Newsweek and their legion of writers is not as qualified to define the term as a former record store employee. . .

How ironic that Mister Opinion-presented-as-Fact is requesting justification for someone's flippant message board comment.
While I was merely referencing one of the questions as to not reveal an answer, and trying to amuse only myself, it seems the Sucka MC has asked me to "Bring it." So, I shall oblige with a thorough serving.
The answer is in an Elton John lyric: "I remember when rock was youg/Me and Suzie had so much fun."
Cut to roughly twenty years later, Elton John is gay, and presumably there was no Suzie. It was all empty words.
Nevermind that this quiz, and Newsweek or whomever are totally ignoring the origins of Rock and Roll. There are four questions referring to black musicians, and none of them are about Chuck Berry, Ike Turner, or Robert Johnson.
What they are celebrating is the time in the 60's when Rock and Roll was not only a musical style, but a pollitical movement. A generation of kids who grew out their hair to show commitment to their causes, who said "forget our parents, we're going to do as many drugs as we can, have sex with the first hole we can find, burn our bras and our draft cards, we don't need no education, don't trust anyone over 30, it's only teenage wasteland, and we're being accompanied by the Who, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Bob Dylan."
Neil Diamond had nothing to do with that. Neil Diamond was suburban status quo. He was safe. He was the rock and roll suburbanite kids were allowed to listen to. He was a part of no revolutions. He made his bones writing songs for a fake group. Neil Diamond was the establishment everyone else was railing against.
But cut to 40 years later, and the long-haired, bra-burning, drugged-out generation started a war on the very substance that supposedly expanded their minds. The generation that paid $25 for a Woodstock ticket would jack up the price to $250 for it's 1994 and 1999 bastardizations. And more atrociously, they put warning labels on Rock and Roll records, deeming what was safe and what wasn't.
So, sure Neil Diamond can be lumped into that Rock and Roll era that they're celebrating, but only because by their own hand, "the rock just died."
But Suzie didn't go off with any foriegn guy, because there is no Suzie.

But Suzie didn't go off with any foriegn guy, because there is no Suzie.Nice essay Robbo. But I think Bernie Taupin wrote those lyrics or at least helped write them and I'm not so sure he's gay. But at least for Sir Elton there was no Suzie.
The whole thing reminds me of the Lester Bangs lines from Almost Famous about the battle (for rock) being over and "they" won.

That's more of the point I was going for. When you hear "Crocodile Rock" or "Tiny Dancer" you're not thinking Bernie Taupin. Those are Elton John songs.

Wow. . .that was the largest, steaming pile of rambling, incoherent bullshit that I've ever seen/read. And the best part? You didn't even address the original comment. I asked HOW you were more qualified to define "rock," based off of your original statement, than the writers of a major (and respected), national publication.
Your answer should have been: "But I worked in a record store. . ."
Seriously, due to your musical omnipotency, gained at said "record store," I'm surprised that Newsweek didn't consult with you prior to releasing this quiz.
Maybe next time, huh?

Hey! M.C.!
Considering your ittle-bittle bruised ego is the real reason this argument has startd...my bad -- you STARTED this argument--, I propose you define what's "creative," before anyone has to explain anything to you.
Isn't that where the grudge started? You laid down big ol' statement about what is "creative," and you got called on your shit?
Are you really just trying to sucker-punch everyone who disagrees with you to make yourself feel better?

Let me do what Robbo couldn't and answer your question directly. Everyone? No.
See how easy that is?

I guess subtlety isn't your strong suit. What I should've said was:
Neil Diamond fans are stupid. I hate them. Stupid Neil Diamond fans. I give his entire catalogue a 1.5 for being a bastard.

We're having some good fun now. I am torn though. I hate Neil Diamond but I also hate the vast majority of record store employees because they act as if the mere fact that they work there means their taste in music is better than mine. I just get tired of their sneering/mocking faces as I try to order an out of print Spice Girls import. Can't a guy just buy a Dokken record in peace? Elitist jerkoffs with their "Radioheads" and their "Death Cars for Cutie".

I got a 28%. Not bad, considering I don't listen to any of these bands besides Kiss. After all, I'm only 17. I mainly listen to AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Black Label Society (Zakk Wylde is a guitar god), Guns N' Roses, Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Zombie, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Oh well, I can live with a 28%.

Hehehehe... Last week we were in Fremantle (which means nothing to any of you I know) on a Tuesday night and there was a massive line outside a nightclub. We were thinking what the hell are all these kids clubbing on a Tuesday for? So I approached one of the bogans (most of them were all dressed in black, makeup, freaks) and asked what they were waiting for. He mumbled something like "Death to unis". We were like "Right ON!". Then debated all the way home trying to work out what he had said. I ended up having to look up the club on the internet when I got home and found out some band called "Death Cab for Cutie" had sold out. None of us have ever heard of them!

Just for the record, that was the dumbest Rock Quiz I have ever taken, just to count questions involving:
Dating: 1
Politics: 2
Non-rock music (Cher, Linda Ronstadt, Luther Vandross, Disco, Whitney Houston and Dolly Parton, etc.): 10
College scholarships for fencing: 1
Videos involving dancing with a star of 'Friends': 1
Funk: 1 (2 if you include how the Woodstock bouncer probably smelled)
Give me a fucking break, if you are going to ask me rock questions, especially classic rock questions, they better be good.
How is Death Cab for Cutie considered Goth? Do they just go by the band name now? Kids these days, sheesh...

I don't know that they are, like I said, I've never heard of them. But the kids lining up for the show weren't your normal jean's & t-shirts kids.
