This is the TV section, and there should be a forum dedicated to Star Trek. It doesn't matter which series we are talking about. All of them (except in my opinion DS9) were huge achievements in Television. Original Trek, TNG, DS9, Eneterprise and whatever other Star Trek Related things that y'all can think of is what i would like to discuss in this forum.
... i'd like to start with my favorite Trek debate: who was a better Captain? Picard or Kirk?

Boy, you gotta be fuckin' kidding me. There will never be a better captain than James Tiberius Kirk.

They both had their good and bad points, but I would say Kirk was better. He was more of the gung ho type that would rush into danger at the drop of a hat, and then need to come up with some amazing plan to get out of it.

I think Picard was too timid when it came to getting into the thick of the battle. He would rather try to talk his way out of a situation and then fight as a last resort.

Now, Janeway was also a pretty good Captain. She was actually kind of a mixture of both Kirk and Picard, which could actually make her better than both. She almost always tried diplomacy first, but didn't hesitate to use force when the situation warranted it.

Kirk. Like Jay, he was all about the ladies. In fact, there should be a remake of Star Trek in a Clerks-style setting with Kirk as Jay and Spock as Silent Bob. That was a joke, but seriously, Kirk is the most kickass Starfleet captain ever.

Aaron
07-25-2006, 07:28 PM
Oh please!
Picard kicks Kirks ass hands down
1- Played by a better actor
2- Had the better storylines
3- Could hold authority better as not only did he have an age advantage but he was generally presented as a thinking man, someone who knew when to fight and when to manouvre, compared to Kirk who's main thoughts were "do I fuck it or kill it?"

the list goes much further but its late and this discussion shouldnt even be taking place
for shame on you for doubting the dome

Now, one thing that should be mentioned
You think enterprise was good?!?!
...Leave town

Picard was hands down a better captain for the simple fact that he was a whiz at being a captain. In every episode he thought through every action that he was going to take and if there was no good solution he would take the one that seemed most likely to work.
Kirk, amazing as he was, was a little too crazy to be running a ship. That's why he frequently was in trouble with his superiors. He would cross boundaries which he wasn't supposed to and while there would try to fight or do something else to put his crew in danger. Kirk was a good captain because he had God on his side... that's the only explanation i can think of for such bitchin' luck.

If Picard or Kirk had been the captain on Voyager, the show wouldnt have been a show, but 3 episode story arc...because they would've found a way home, and maybe even brought some whales. I liked Sisco too. Ds9 was way better than Voyager.

I always find myself at loss for an answer to the whole Kirk vs. Picard. It just depends on which one I have seen most recently, so at the moment it's Jean Luc.

I was a huge Star Trek fan until Voyager came along, then I handed in my uniform. That show bores me to tears, it's like watching Star Trek: Paint By Numbers. All of the characters got on way too well, and the cast was terrible. Robert Beltran, Tim Russ, Robert Macneil, Garrett Wang et al can't act for shit.

Oh yeah, and Voyager itself looked like a thumbnail with warp nacelles.

Picard was obviously the best captain due to the writers making him and the entire main crew flawless characters.

Now, I am no way a trekkie, but I come from a house of trekkies. In order I like Next Gen., DS9, and the first couple seasons Voyager. I could never get into the original because Shatner annoys me, and I never even bothered to watch Enterprise.

I have to agree with the comments that the first season or so of Enterprise were good. Unfortunately, they changed writers after that and the whole thing went to shit. It is too bad they waited too long to get rid of them, as the last season was really good too. Of course, it was too little too late, as I think most of the fans that were watching it for the first season refused to come back for the last even though the writers were replaced.

As far as all of the bad comments about Voyager go, I guess we all have our own opinions. I liked Voyager the best of them all. I did get tired easily of the whole mightier than thou 7 of 9 though. Not the looking at her part, just the character itself. The only other bad part was that numerous episodes did kind of mirror episodes from other Trek series'.

Not quite that intense, but Captin Picard is better than Kirk. He was more of a thinkers captin. The kind with a more layerd personlity and you could actually learn more about him. For example, a while after he is asimalated he goes home to his brother's winery and you learn about him before he became a captin. And he has that breakdown moment about not being able to stop himself and fight the borg. He was and always will be the best.

EDIT:
Found this little quote for the second episode
"Down in the tunnels, Geordi can't see anything, even with his funky banana clip, Tasha fights off a rape gang flashback, and Troi opens up her mind to find . . . . pain. Lots and lots of pain. Boy, there sure is a lot of pain. Riker and Data beam into the tunnels, and she tells them that there's also unhappiness, and terrible despair, from some sort of lifeform that isn't anything like them. (Trekkies again? Oh I didn't! Yeah, I did.) Geordi's magic banana clip springs to life, and he reveals that he sees some zany building material that he doesn't recognize at all. Yes, it's all very spooky and mysterious. We get it. Hey, as long as you're taking your time and not moving the story forward at all, why not have a pod race?"

That's it, from now when I see a spelling error like this, I'm just going to bold it, possibly correct it (when I feel like it and it's not completely obvious like this one), and give my personal stamp of grammar efficiency (be aware the stamp could vary depending on the situation). I don't intend to check the boards for mistakes constantly, but bad grammar, especially on these boards, annoys the hell out of me. And the stamp for this mistake is...

I quite like 14:
14. To capture Picard, you need a real trap. To capture Kirk, you say: "Hey, Captain, here's a pit" and push him in.

I love Star Trek, but I just can't get interested in this movie. I find the idea of a young Kirk and Spock adventure - if that is what it really will be about - pointless.

Plus, I've heard the term 'reboot' being used, and Trek has always (tried) to keep continuity throughout all the shows and movies. I hope the history isn't messed with at all.

Although, Sylar does resemble Spock.

There will be a big announcement in the next few days on this. They have been keeping when it takes place underwraps. All the things you have heard a rumors and from the same people who kept cloverfield so well hidden until they revealed it. It's partially cast and the script is pretty locked. They are keeping the casting so tight people in the office don't even know who has been cast. They start shooting in the fall. My source could tell me know more. He's evil like that.

I really want to know what the sets will look like. Is it going to be that wacky 60's TV Show looking stuff? Is it going to be the cold military feel on the Enterprise Show? The 80's Hotel Room that was the Star Trek TNG, the Boring Voyager, the Alien Looking DS9 (though the defiant did look like a kickass super turtle)

Or are they going to say that First Contact exposed the past to a glmipse of the future so things will look diffrent?

Really when I think Star Trek, I think the Movies, like Trek 2-5

Anyways, say JJ does a good job, would you want him to bring back TNG cast for 1 last hurrah?

Or would you like to see a NEW Moive, with NEW PEOPLE setting thier own Journey (like the First Star Trek Film(minus the NEW Cast)

Definitely. I'm hoping some of the cast will secretly be in this movie. Nemesis was good fun, but a let down in terms of closure for TNG crew.

I found this site (http://www.firsttvdrama.com/enterprise/) which basically breaks down every Enterprise episode and exposes all the errors and major continuity errors the show seems to have become somewhat famous for. Its all written quite amusingly, with a few laugh out loud moments.

The Borg (Regeneration) and Ferengi (Acquisitions) episodes are interesting reads.

The episode guide is on the left hand side.

ZBarclay

I read all the way through the "Regeneration" page to get to a fabulous quote, "Let's not forget that Seven was a virgin." I guess that could explain all of her teen style angst.

THE PREMISE: I don't care any more.

I've been saying for a long time that the Trek franchise is so watered down, that it's time for another 20 year hiatus. But, I'm sure no one will listen. Prepare for the flogging of the dead horse.

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry passed away today (http://trekmovie.com/2008/12/18/majel-barrett-roddenberry-passes-away/). Leukemia.

She played Nurse Chapel, Lwaxana Troi, and voiced the Enterprise computer in three series, 4 TNG films, and had just finished work reprising her role as the voice of the Enterprise for Abrams Trek.

Reasons Why Captain Picard is Better

Has a bigger spaceship, which can separate into two also-bigger spaceships.
Kirk has technobabble. Picard has technology.
Quotes Shakespeare all the time. Hell, even the ability to speak without pausing every two to three seconds puts him above Kirk
Not only the president of the Enterprise, but also a client.
Was turned into a Borg. Borg are cool. Vote Locutus.
Picard goes undercover.
Remained in command of his Enterprise for well over seven years. Kirk didn't even finish his first five-year mission.
Can say "Make it so" in 43 different inflections in over six million forms of communication. (Including Ainu)
Picard actually worked with David Tennant. He is 92% sexier than Kirk just because of this association.
Picard knows how to make a starship last. He only lost one, and that was when he wasn’t aboard (the Stargazer doesn't count). Kirk has gone through 3.
He actually knows how to use a comma.
Anything Picard says sounds meaningful and profound. This is the exact opposite on Kirk's effect on words.
Isn't a walking sexual harassment suit. Hiring Picard instead of a skirt-chaser like Kirk is estimated to have saved the Federation 23 billion credits worth of legal fees and hush money paid to the mothers of illegitimate children spread out across hundreds of star systems.
Has an annoying techno song composed totally of his lines. Then someone took the time to make a music video by finding the scenes the lines were from, and editing them to fit the song. Crazy. (Although, he IS Locutus of Borg, and you will respond to his questions)
Wasn't made an admiral. Kirk told him not to let Starfleet promote him, and he didn't. Therefore Picard is better.
Wore a red shirt and stayed alive through every episode Except for Tapestry, but he was judged badass enough by a demigod to be resurrected, only after experiencing a custom-constructed version of reality.
Speaking of the demigod, Picard kept Q from eradicating humanity in the pilot episodes.
Picard's doctor is someone you would actually want to get a prostate exam from.
He had a ship's counselor who was nude in several movies before joining his ship.
Picard has an awesome English accent, even though he's French.
