I am currently listening to the 'Purple Rain' album, and I think it is great! This might be Bloody Marys at midnight, but I put this album (yes vynil) on the player, and it's musically grand! I put aside the clique and how the fag looks, and just listened to the musical ability. WOW

What other albums and/or cds are musically pleasing to you that the general public does not appreciae?

Skid Row- Slave to the Grind

Everyone's like "Skid Row?!?! What are you, gay? (Not that there's anything wrong with that)"
And I'm like "Cheesy-assed power ballads aside, it's a heavy fuckin' album. Piss off before I put my size 13E Doc Martin through your shin."
And they're like "Go ahead and try it, ya pussy."
And I'm like "I've kicked more ass and nailed more pussy in more countries than you can count to on all your fingers and toes."
And they're like "At least we can count."
And I'm like "And you can count on me kicking your dumb ass from here to Kingdom Come." At which point I head-butt them and break their nose. While they're bent over, trying to stop the flow of blood and snot from their olfactory oriface, I give them an atomic wedgie. But what I failed to notice was the giant girlfriend lurking in the shadows. She whips out a bag of Ho-Ho's and commences to pelting me in the face. Temporarily blinded by chocolate, I slip in a puddle of blood and wrench my back out of whack- again. So I'm lying on the floor, practically paralyzed by the pain. They can taste their underwear, which is really bad because they can only breathe through their mouth. And Rotunda the Hutt is licking Ho-Ho's off her fingers...

You should never be ashamed for listening to Purple Rain or anything Prince for that matter. That soundtrack is amazing, and even the songs that he wrote for the other bands in the movie that aren't on the soundtrack are gold. Besides, the soundtrack has "I Would Die 4 U" which is the best Prince song.

Prince's biggest problem is that he is too talented. Composing, playing, writing, etc, he's just too good to be commercial at times. In those early label days, when he had someone telling him, "NO!" and he had to back off a little bit, he was sonically superior pop (at that time the two biggest pop stars were Michael Jackson and Prince). The only bad Prince songs are when he was phoning it in for the label.

Unfortunately now, he's a little too isolated and he has no one telling him to back off. Now his new album is cool, but it feels like he's just rehashing his old work.

You'd be hard pressed to find anyone, especially any fans of just freakin' good music that didn't like Prince or the Purple Rain soundtrack.

I could play music snob and say just about all of my collection, but I get what you're saying so I'll provide a real answer.

Oasis. They have some great albums and songs. Their attitudes, their fake feuds, them cancelling their '96 US tour midway across the Atlantic on the flight over here hasn't really endeared them to American fans. I put them up there with the Faces. Just good base pop songs about drinkin' and fuckin', and sometimes that's all you need.

Kind of along the line of Prince, but His song When Doves Cry is my favorite song of his. The guy may look strange, but he's actually very talented.

Oasis.
Agreed, This is another one of the type of groups where people ask "WTF" and I pull the musicall card to which they usuall reply RULES. as in 'Ozzie' from the 70s-80s, Danzig of the 90s, and now Marilyn Manson.

but His song [i]When Doves Cry is my favorite song of his. The guy may look strange, but he's actually very talented.

This is also one of my favorites, but I have to ctake sides with Robbo, "I Would Die For You" is the best song Prince wrote.

I've been a big fan of Brendan Benson for a few years
Very Beatles-y and never took itself too seriously
Now however, since joining forces with Jack White and creating The Raconteurs he might start building up a fanbase for his old work
Metarie = great song

On the Prince front
Always cool but I still love "Cream" or "Get off" as my fave Prince hits

Shame on you Matthew for even thinking there would be something wrong with loving a Prince album. Prince is one of the greatest musicians of all time. Despite his weirdness, he is a extremely talented musician. Also, I forget the exact number, but I believe he can play over 25 different instruments. (Not all at once that would require extra limbs and mouths, and would look really really strange, but not as strange as Micheal Jackson.)

Peach is a good song, I forget which album it's from. He does some pretty neat sounds with the guitar in that one.
Also as mentioned above Cream & Get off are a couple of my favorite songs by him as well.
Anything from the Purple Rain or Parade albums are great.
I could go on and on, but I'll stop before I get into trouble here at work.
