You were caught in the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!

That song came on the college station that we listen to at work this morning. I didn't know that it was about Syd until my boss told me while the song was on. He asked, "I wonder if he died," as the station never plays Pink Floyd. A little bit of looking gave me the answer. It also learned me that while visiting his old band, coincidentally during the recording of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," a bald Syd attempted to brush his teeth by holding his toothbrush still while he jumped.

It's amazing what drugs can do to a "right" mind. But throw some in on a mind askew. Double jeopardy. I can say that if Syd had not freaked out, we might not of had the chance to enjoy that which is Gilmour.

Actually in one of the Pink Floyd dvds, one of the members adress this idea. They actually DIDN'T do too many drugs.

I guess people are allowed to contradict themselves.
Gilmour would later say: "Syd didn't need encouraging. If drugs were going, he'd take them by the shovelful."

"He thought his happiness was complete when, as he meandered aimlessly along, suddenly he stood by the edge of a full-fed river. Never in his life had he seen a river before--this sleek, sinuous, full-bodied animal, chasing and chuckling, gripping things with a gurgle and leaving them with a laugh, to fling itself on fresh playmates that shook themselves free, and were caught and held again. All was a-shake and a-shiver--glints and gleams and sparkles, rustle and swirl, chatter and bubble. The Mole was bewitched, entranced, fascinated. By the side of the river he trotted as one trots, when very small, by the side of a man who holds one spell-bound by exciting stories; and when tired at last, he sat on the bank, while the river still chattered on to him, a babbling procession of the best stories in the world, sent from the heart of the earth to be told at last to the insatiable sea." -The Wind in the Willows
Hope the water is warm, mate.

In variety, no. In quantity.......different story.
**Edit: I have to add that I just bought "The Wall" on DVD with a Best Buy gift card. I haven't watched it in years. Since my girlfriend needs to be in a certain mood to watch it, I've been catching it in bits and pieces when I have the TV to myself. To have Syd die in the middle of watching that movie is eerily surreal.
The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think. Oh by the way,
Which ones pink?
Don't think he ever really wanted to ride the Gravy Train.
Think I'll have a cigar in his honor.

Rather than start a new thread I'll just hijack this one. I went and saw the local planetarium's latest incarnation of 'Laser Floyd' which happened to be lasers set to the entire album "Dark Side of the Moon". I'll spare the details suffice to say I was accompanied by my wife's extended family including her septagenarian grandmother and we made quite the group crowded in with acid-trippers and a bunch of people that reminded me of psychofiend for some reason. Anyway, to the point, while watching and listening it occurred to me that I have no idea what Dark Side of the Moon is really about aside from some vague idea that it is a comment on human existence. So, since everyone here is an expert, please share your take, what the hell is this album actually about?

It's a soundtrack to "The Wizard Of Oz."

I wouldn't call myself an expert, though knowing that music is a form of art, then I'm going to go ahead and guess that it's about whatever the person listening to it thinks it's about.

Syd is missed. I actually bought The Madcap Laughs and Barrett not too long before his death. :(
