I figured out Italy won when I was driving home today and saw an old italian guy (had to be in his 60's/70's) hanging out of the sunroof of a car waving a giant Italian flag while speeding down a major highway. It was quite a sight.

It took me forever to figure out what you were talking about. I'm thinking to myself, "what the hell is he yanking on?" I guess as an American I'm too self-centered to remember that there are people in the world who refer to us as something other than 'Americans'.
That said, I am totally soccer (or football) ignorant so feel free to a'splain why my statement of something that seems obvious to me elicits a sigh. :)

Well, Zinedine Zidane was one of the greatest players of the game ever.
He's up there with Pele and Maradona, and for you to call him a jackass due to an admittedly stupid slip in his last game....well, hence the sigh.
It was a sad night for football.

I'd agree with all of that. But I still think he's a jackass for sticking that unforgettable blemish at the end of his career. Just like Madonna is a jackass for doing 'Swept Away'. Ohhhh, you said "Maradona", not Madonna. I'm not sure why he's a jackass but he probably is. ;)
I blame American sports announcers for my lack of soccer knowledge. It does seem like Italy was totally outplayed, at least in the second half and overtime. Is there some better way to finish these games rather than the anticlimactic penalty kicks?

I hated seeing that, because after France got to the Round of 16, Zidane played lights-out soccer and he made his teammates better. And announcing his retirement whenever France should stop playing only added to the drama of the aged veteran trying to live one last moment of glory. It was such a great story. Then he landed terribly on his shoulder and was calling for a sub, and then came back and provided even more great imagery.
And then the stupidest thing I have ever seen in sports. In overtime, in the chamionship game, the best athlete on the pitch, the man that carried his team to the finals made the worst of mental errors.
And the guy still won the MVP for the tournament.
But congrats to Italy. My next door neighbor is from Sardinia, and while he said he isn't that into soccer anymore, I bet he's still happy as whatever apt Italian proverb.

That was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen on live TV. Right up there with Todd Bertuzzi sucker-punching Steve Moore. Just incredible.
Sad, though. Going in, I had planned on rooting for Italy, partially because one of my friend's dads is from Italy, partially because of the way they gutted out the game against Germany to score twice in the last two minutes of the game. But they were completely outplayed by the French. The French won me over by being so dominant. Then they lose Henry and Zidane 15 minutes before PK time...sucks.

You nor I are professional athletes, and I bet our jobs aren't under near as much scrutiny as playing in the World Cup Championship. And not to justify his actions, but I bet if I came to your job I could figure out something to make you forget where you were and come at me fists a-flyin'. And you might be totally justified in coming at me, but you still get fired for inappropriate conduct.
And everyone is like that. I'm a pretty stoic guy in most cases, but I have my buttons just as everyone else. I'm guessing dude just said the one thing that could get to him.
But he must be scum, according to you because being from Florida, I'm sure you've been watching those Real Madrid games pretty closely for the last five years.
Now, what's interesting is over his career he has 14 ejections over the course of his career. Now if this were baseball or gridiron football, that would be massive. Because of multiple yellow cards, it's easier to get thrown out of a soccer game, especially with all the diva diving.
I think the biggest testament has to be from all of the commentators and analysts that have followed his career who were also heartbroken to see Zidane lose his cool. As opposed to when Rooney got the boot for stepping on a guy's balls, and Rooney was referred to by everyone as a young thuggish dirty punk that needed to grow up.
But again, you being from Florida, and that much closer to Europe than I, well I can see why you're the authority on the character and motivations of a French athlete. I mean it's practically your back yard.
Now it seems that Zidane is the son of Arab immigrants to France, and given French attitudes towards its Arab population (culminating in riots of Watts-like proportions), if that terrorist comment is what was said then I shall defer to Rock on this one: I'm not saying he should have done it, but I understand.

oh hey look condescending prig alert.
he has a record of violence at games. it was very unsportsmanlike for him to do that. if mata was saying what was claimed to be said he did exactly what the person wanted..got himself ejected from the game because he overreacted. thus not having him there for penalty kicks (which hey he's known for) lowering the morale of his team (b/c hey he's el capitan ) thus having them fuck up a penalty kick and losing the game
i never said he was scum, did i? i said he was a jackass. theres a difference. don't put words in my mouth please.
no not everyone is like that. no matter what is said to me i will not resort to brutish violence. i'd rather walk away a bigger person then stoop to there level or even lower. so i'd take your bet and win.
ps oh and i know all about playing soccer and what it's like. i used to play it in high school. i know theres a lot of shit talking. most people don't jump and attack the other person they just brush it off. i'm not saying it doesn't happen. i'm just saying there is a better way it could have been handled

You know, the way Zidane was walking away and just stopped and turned and made a bee-line right towards the guy, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that were true. He had to have said something bad...like beyond "Yo Momma." When it first happened, the wife and I guessed that he had said that we was going to kidnap his children and eat his wife. Zidane's wife was involved according to this story (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=373706&cc=5901):Materazzi, 32, told Gazetta dello Sport: 'I held his shirt for a few seconds only, then he turned to me and talked to me, jeering.
'He looked at me with a huge arrogance and said, 'If you really want my shirt I'll give it to you afterwards'. I replied with an insult, that's true.'
Materazzi has not elaborated on what he did say, but one report suggested he responded with: 'I'd rather take the shirt off your wife'.
Pretty funny in my opinion. It seems like it would only elicit a head butt if Zidane's wife happened to be dead.

Materazzi is probably a jackass too. Perhaps the best way to get back at people who say things like that is to outplay them. Win the game first and then headbutt 'em in the parking lot afterwards.

I may be too old-school on this matter, but no chance in hell I'd ever go after somebody that talked shit to me on the field. I'd get his ass during play(hopefully without getting caught), but nothing as blatant as that ignorant head-butt. I've got a temper that comes from some of my descendants from your home country, but I'll be damned if somebody's smart-ass mouth is going to be enough to jeopardize a game I'm playing. Now, talk shit about me, or mine, off the field, and the story might change.

Zidane actually explained (http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/sports/soccer/news/20060713p2a00m0sp009000c.html) why he did it on French TV today, and I don't know if I would have reacted differently in that situation.

If that makes me a lesser individual, so be it.That's just it, brother. As an individual, you're fine for going off. It only affects you. But, when your on a team, you've got to look towards the greater good. I totally agree that most everyone has a breaking point, but you've got to see from you opponents view. If there's anything they can say to get one of the best players in the world off the field with some bull-shit trash talk, that very few will ever hear, it's just a damn good strategy. That being said, if any of the boys I coached every talked trash, and I heard it, they were picking splinters outta their ass for part of the game.
