View Full Version : X3

Just got back from a midnight showing...

All I can say is don't believe the internet reviews... X3 isn't a full blown failure, its simply a peg below the others. The storyline is the best of the three in my opinion, its just a shame that the whole flick was a rushed production. Had the same script remained with one director for the whole time, this could have been the best of the trilogy.

Instead, we get a bunch of interesting scenarios and twists that have a ton of potential, but end up as missed opportunities. As for the Phoenix saga... well that was probably the biggest let down, her story never really develops and Jean stays on the sidelines for most of the film. The Phoenix saga really needed to be its own movie, tying it into this mutant war plot was just too much for one film, and as such Phoenix does not get justice.

But as far a popcorn entertainment goes, I was satisfied. The film is just oozing with fanboy action, seeing a crowd of mutants fight looks exactly like you'd imagine... crazy and varied powers everywhere. As for that "special something" after the credits... it was worth sticking around for.

Well, that's about all I can offer without getting into spoilers... What did everyone else think?

I just checked it out yesterday and I loved, loved, LOVED it!
It's so much better than X2, which bored me to horrible tears. I don't pretend to be a expert on the the comic's storylines, but I was glued to the screen the whole time. Only one thing annoyed me:

***SPOLIER ALERT***

In the very first scene, Magneto and Xavier are shown 20 years earlier, and the CGI "Botox" is one of the creepiest effects I've ever seen.

Shite. There was something at the end of the credits? Bugger, I was busting for the loo!

Yeah, my best friend saw this special on tv to stay for something special at the end credits and everyone in the theatre, but like 15 and my "homies," left. And, I was doing my "pee pee dance" the whole time! My god, it was a brilliant ending. So unexpected.

But, as far as the movie goes I liked it. But, I think that was mostly because Hugh Jackman was in a wife beater the whole time. Oh, yeah! ;)

That was a really cool effect. I probably wouldn't have known it was done by computers if I hadn't read about it earlier. It looked much more seamless than I expected, and leaps and bounds better than the usual make-up deaging process, which never looks like anything besides a pound of make-up on an older person. The idea of doing a Magneto movie using that technology now sounds much more interesting. And given that I saw the Da Vinci Code last night (terrible, in my opinion), i'm now on an Ian McKellan high. That guy could give a speech about corn flakes and you'd still be moved by his performance. He's just that damn good.

Do any of the people who liked the movie - read the comics?

I'm seeing it in 2 hours.

I haven't seen it yet. I'm really glad to hear it's not terrible. I think I'll be happy if it just doesn't ruin the series. It's weird how expectations can change.

I saw a small clip from this last night just before I went to bed... I wasn't able to sleep because the clip involved something I've wanted to see since the first film was barely more than a rumour.

Well, there's a slight problem. By now, you have to accept that the X-men movies are basically an alternate universe of the comics. All the new characters introduced for this movie... don't expect anything close to the character's comic origin stories or how they end up meeting/siding with the X-men or Brotherhood.

Probably the best comparison I can make is the difference between the Hitchhiker's Guide book and movie... its the same characters in familiar yet different situations.

On the plus side, there's a few comic book catch phrases thrown in the movie that got some chuckles from the well informed members of the audience.

I liked it but it was nowhere near as good as X2. I found some of the dialogue laughable, and not in a good way. It was like they tried so hard for the one-liner that the whole movie was a bunch of one liners. I also thought the transitions were odd - like the story didn't flow as well. Even the performances weren't as good as X2. Case in point: Ms H. Berry - she was cringeworthy at times. Of course Hugh Jackman is bloody gorgeous even with excessive facial hair.

Smurfy - PM me the extra scene will ya?

" I`m the Juggernaut, Bitch"

GOt a huge reaction in my screening. As did the preview for SNAKES ON A PLANCE and Clerks 2 (which looks damn good, I WANT to see it)

As I thought, I didn't like it. It's like people who know their history watching something like Elizabeth or the Kevin Costner version of Robin Hood. It just causes physical pain to see it.

The previews we got were: My super ex-girlfriend (which looks awesome), Fast and Furious 3 and some horror movie that takes place in a cave

After talking to you yesterday, I didn't think you would. Sorry you didn't enjoy it, but did you at least enjoy the shirtless Hugh Jackman? :D

And, the previews we got were: 'My Super Ex-Girlfriend,' 'Snakes (On a Mother Fuckin') Plane,' 'Pirates 2' (which better be good), 'Nacho Libre' (which looks fantastic!) and some other film I can't remember.

You can tell there was a changing of the guard, and not just with the Director
There was too much setting up for the next in the franchise
And I too left before the end of the credits
Is it worth going to see it again for it?

I left the theater with a completely different impression of this film from any of you guys. Guess I'm just not a fanboy geek purist, but as far as the universe created by the first two films, I was quite pleased. I didn't really notice any contrived efforts at one liners- the dialogue seemed to fit the scenes rather well. This isn't really the kind of movie one would expect serious monlogues and in depth discussions to take place in anyway. In so far as this being one big set up for a sequal- I don't see it at all. There were a few instances where one might believe that, but I didn't see it that way- if those instance had been left out, then the whole point of the movie- hope for the future- would have been completely lost- I would have left the theater feeling more than a little bleak and depressed about the characters I've had strong feelings towards for a long time. (If I'm too vague, it's on purpose. I know some people still haven't seen it yet.)

Really, really disappointing. A jumbled mess. Man, I'm bummed. And no Superman Returns trailer, either. Blah. :(

Can somebody describe the secret scene after the credits? PM me if you don't want to post spoilers. Thanks.

EDIT: I just found a description of the after credits scene. What a crock of #$%^.

My X3 story goes like this , I finally got the new wingchick to allow me to pick what movie we were going to see and when we get there, there's a hyuuuge line and so I asked the box office dude " What's this line for ? " and he says "X-Men 3. " And I said "Two for Davinci Code, please. "

Actually, X3 is so much better than the first that the reviews seem like (something I predicted last year) just a wave in the negativity ocean that will be this summers slamfest by the critics.

Last year was too much positivity for the critics... they liked way too many summer action flicks. So, this year is the shitfest. These things always work in cycles.

By the way, as a fan of the comics, I find it total bullshit when people knock X3 for not sticking to those stories... when these same people pretend like X1 and X2 were different.

I got to see it last weekend at the drive-ins. Over the Hedge was playing with it. I liked them both.

X-men was really good. Where did NightCrawler go? I don't think I saw him at all.
I did spot Stan Lee though.

I dont think alan cumming was contracted for a sequel
It's a shame because his entrance in X2 was really impressive but they seem to lose interest with him even half way through that film
Maybe he'll be back for the (possible) fourth

Finally someone I agree with. Didn't like this at all. Not just the Ratner thing either. The film actually looked pretty good and the direction was decent. My main problem is the introduction of so many awesome characters that they just didn't use well. I mean, come on, Angel was cast perfectly yet was only used when convenient, like most characters in this movie. Overall, I was really disappointed, but it could've been worse. How, you ask? Chris Tucker could've been cast as Gambit. That would have been scary.

I think that X- Men 3 was the best of the trilogy although I wish it had the same director as the other 2. But that maybe that's because Beast is my favourite X-Man. When I heard that Kelsey Grammer from Fraisier was going to be Beast I thought it was a bad coice but he did suprisingly good. I liked a lot of the the new characters but it should of had Nightcrawler return and Gambit in it. And I think you couldn't have X-Men 3 without Phoenix because Jean Grey is dead. Also i've heard that they're making another trilogy if they do I hope Apocalypse is in it.
