View Full Version : Miyazaki's Spirited Away
You know me. You know how I earn my livin'...
So. this evening, while capturing and encoding various programs, I decided to check out this film...
This is the absolute, most beautiful animated film I have ever seen. Of course, we don't have the 42" widescreen plasma monitor set up in the VOD space yet, but I was impressed nonetheless. We aired it about a month or so ago on TCM and then the next week on Cartoon... I'm heading down to the local video store tomorrow and picking up a copy. This is the first Miyazaki film I've ever seen- with a career going back well into the 60's, there is a lot for me to check out.

yeah it is a great film along the lines of alice in wonderland or wizard of oz only more surreal. I haven't seen any of his other films either ex ept princess mononoke which I thought was okay but kiki's delivery service is meant to be good. I'm slowly edging toward anime again now with films of this calibur and cowboy bebop.

I'm not a big fan of this, or any other of Miyazaki's films. They just don't "click" with me or something. I was bored to tears when I saw Spirited Away in the cinema, and I went with two people who loved it and didn't shut up about it all the way home on the bus, which probably didn't help.

Spirited Away is actually the only Miyazaki film that really did click with me. I thinks it's nothing short of amazing.

I love "Spirited Away", but "Princess Mononoke" is probably my favorite anime film of all time. I've probably seen 5 of his films, and they were all good to great, even the early "Castle of Caligari" which was his take on the popular "Lupin III" character.

I'm a big fan of Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind; more of the manga than the movie since the movie tried to truncate about 4 books into a two-hour film. But both are real good.

I've Just been on something of an anime craze, picking up Millenium Actress and Laputa: Castle in the sky. The latter I remember seeing footage of in some music video and it looked beatiful back then, I'm glad it's available now.
I've also picked up the fist season of GHost in the shell which I heard good things about, I'll buy the second movie eventually but not yet. And FFVII: advent children is out next month in it's dubbed glory, I hope they include the subs and original sound as well though, but no longer will I feel guilty about having my illegal divx copy.
I've only seen a few of Miyazaki's films. Though the ones I've seen I've really liked. Spirited Away is one of my favorites.
I don't think I've seen Castle in the Sky. I'm going to have to watch it, along with some others I've missed.
I bought Spirited Away on Monday, but I haven't had the time to sit down and watch it yet. I'll have to watch again at work. I almost bought Howl's Moving Castle as well, I may do that in a few weeks.
I've been looking around for the original Ghost in the Shell movie, but I haven't seen it in any stores lately. I can't really get into the SAC shows for some reason...

"Ghost in the Shell" is beautifully animated and has a solid William Gibson-y story. That said, I've never really flipped for it, the way many anime fans have. I even re-watched it recently, after having originally seen it in its theatrical release, and had the same reaction. I suggest a rental. I haven't seen the sequel or the tv show.

Spirited Away might be the best Miyazaki film so it could be all downhill from where you started. I like Laputa and Nausicaa ok.
Totoro is a bit childish but it's ok. I haven't heard anything about a Spirited Away spinoff.
I like Ghost In The Shell a fairly good amount. I liked it more and more after each viewing. But it usually appeals to a different audience than the Miyazaki stuff.
The Miyazaki stuff is very Americanized. So is Bebop. So they're usually liked by the same sorts. Ghost in the Shell is a bit more Japanese.
And now for some self promotion -- Movies I've reviewed in International Intrigue: Millenium Actress (and all Kon's films), Howl's Moving Castle, Ghost In The Shell:Innocense and Final Fantasy 7:Advent Children. So you can check out the archives if you want more info.
I recommend Akira and Steamboy. But to each their own...
I saw Howl's Moving Castle last night. For any of you who haven't seen it, it is definately worth checking out. Well, I liked it anyway. I guess that doesn't really mean any of you will, but I just thought I'd let you all know that I think it is good. :)
