I've watched the first three episodes and it's exactly what I remember it being as a kid. Campy Fun with an awesome main title music. So far I like the end of the world episode. Something about referring to Britney Spear's "Toxic" and Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" as ancient classical music just maskes me smile.

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The wife and I initially bonded over our shared love of Doctor Who. I was extraordinarily happy to see that the new series didn't, well, you know, suck. :)
I've seen 2 of the 3 episodes, and liked them myself. Unlike JB, my wife doesn't cotton to the good Dr. (and his hotty companion Rose), so i have to watch the 11 pm re-run on Thurdays.

Billie Piper.
She was something of a celeb in this part of the world a few years back.
She had a short-lived career as a pop starlet.
Dr. Who was considering her comeback of sorts.

She was actually around before Britney.
She was on the same label as Spice Girls (Virgin, I think), and they thought they could do the same with a solo popster as they did with them.
Needless to say, they couldn't.

I have seen the Dalek Episode written by The League of Gentlemen's Mark Gatiss which was fun. I also saw about 10 minutes of the christmas special but I will watch them all soon.
It gets a thumbs up from me, it's fun and camp but not in an outdated way, some of the effects are cheesy but modern cheey so it's all good.

One wonders why she needed to tattoo her own name on her belly like that. That's unfortunate. I had a good laugh at the show this past weekend (Charles Dickens and the Bleak House), when the Doctor said something about Rose being 19, because i don't know much about time travel, but it sure must age you pretty good, i'd have pegged her at mid-20s not late teens...

So yeah, Captian Jack is pretty cool. I missed the second half of the 2 parter that introduced him (with the kid in the Gas mask) and the very beginning of the one where they capture the Baby-faced Alien who was going to Time Surf off of earth. In the original the original series he was supposed to have only been able to reincarnate himself several times but I think they never got around to his 7th form. HE always came back with a new personality because it would be pointless trying to get multiple actors to play the same role rather than wing it and bring something new.
In this case Christopher Eccleston simply wanted out after the first series, and David Tennan has filled his shoes, I dont think the new series has a restriction on the number of times the doc can change though.

coming to the Sci-Fi Channel! It looks as if it is going to be a pretty good show. Anyone from England familiar with it? Is it worth watching?
Hey all. Season 2 of Doctor Who just finished in England (although I don’t know why it’s referred to as season 2 because the shows been going for 40 odd years!). Anyhow, without giving away anything, episode 4, in my view, is the best episode of the current season. Nicely written. Watch out for it.
Also, and I'm convinced this isn't a spoiler, but an enticing hint; just like last season featured the words 'Bad Wolf', this season 'Torchwood' is mentioned in some form in every episode so keep a keen eye out! Torchwood, I'm sure you all know, is an anagram of Doctor Who.
I'm not sure if the Doctor can re-generate 11 or 12 times, but I'm sure they are still sticking to that in this present re-incarnation. I'm not sure if the English/American Doctor Who movie a few years back featuring Paul McGann counts in the regeneration process though.

Last night's episode about the warewolf was very good.
SPOILER FOLLOWS? Just highlight the text to read it.
I liked how they tied in the origins of Torchwood that was in the previous episode that blew up the aliens' ship. I do find it odd that they didn't recognize the name of the estate when the Queen mentioned it. Especially, when the Doctor was so upset that the aliens were blown up needlessly after they agreed to leave. You would think the name "Torchwood" would be engrained in his memory.

Maybe. Maybe not. The series is to be shown on the CBBC channel, which is squarely aimed at young children so I doubt it will be up to the standard of Doctor Who, or the more adult themed, Torchwood.
Anyone think they're spreading the Doctor Who brand too quickly, what with the main programme and now two spin-offs. If the proposed one-off special, Rose Tyler: Earth Defence actually went ahead, that would have made it three spin-offs in less then two years of the good doctor returning to our screens.

Okay dokes; the first two episodes of Torchwood aired this evening on BBC3. I was going to start a Torchwood thread but I’m not sure when most of you will get to see it - probably next year sometime? Anyhow, I thought I'd do a bit of teasing and hopefully make you more excited about this show...
Certainly no spoilers, but this show is very adult fare. It has bad language, blood and believe me; episode two has a great deal of language of a provocative nature, and some scenes of a sexual nature. Oh, and an alien who feeds off orgasms! Definitely something you won’t see in Doctor Who.
Captain Jack's character works very well. His team seem interesting enough along with all the alien gadgets they incorporate. Some cool (a strange medieval glove which can bring bodies back from the dead for 2 minutes) and some funny (an aftershave which, when sprayed, makes women and men go sex-crazed!)
Overall, a better start then the first episode of C. Eccelston's doctor. A spin-off worth watching.

Dude, are you like living in 1980? Are you thinking of the original series? You must be as the current Battlestar Galactica is one of the best shows on TV right now and they just announced in March that it was picked up for a full 4th season; 22 brand new episodes to include a 2 hour special.

no offence to all you who-heads are whatever your special fan name is, but the last episode of Dr. Who i caught looked like it had been shot on a camcorder, edited in iMovie and employed the same special effects and makeup people who worked on Interview With a Vampire (the cinematic epic, with such well-written dialogue as 'view the world with your vampire eyes'). if I was in fact watching 'Dr. Noo' or some other show that was recorded on a camcorder in the directors basement I apologize, but if it is the real Dr. Who, I gotta admit, it looks pretty crappy. :)
i don't know what you were watching, but it wasn't Dr. Who i don't think, for the most part, the NuWho has been very well directed, shot and edited.

For sure, Doctor Who does not have the budget of some US shows, and yes, the effects from time to time look 'amateurish' but some of the stories this season really have raised the Who bar.
I was never a big fan of the show; I always found the concept more interesting then the show I was watching, but the latter half of this season has really won me over.

I thought "The Shakespeare Code" was excellent. I wonder if they cast the actor playing Shakespeare for his Kenneth Branagh-ish-ness?
FanGirl
07-14-2007, 02:38 PM
I had that very same thought. I also loved the Harry Potter references.
There was one line that I didn't get the reference. Shakespeare and Jones were flirting. The Doctor said there will be time for that later. Shakespeare said something I hope so or promise and then the Doctor said "56 professors are punching the air right now." I didn't get it.
Antonio_Bay

From Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shakespeare_Code):
'At one point, Shakespeare flirts with the Doctor as well, to which the Doctor replies, "Fifty-seven academics just punched the air." Most of Shakespeare's sonnets, including Sonnet 18, are believed by Shakespearean academics to be addressed to a man, and there is a sizable body of scholarship on Shakespeare's sexuality.'

Saturdays ep was 'ok'. Russel Davis sure writes some crappy stories. Nice surprise towards the end though. Very nice surprise...
There i fixed that for you.
I liked it actually. The main story was pretty weak, but most of the season openers have been that way when you think about them. At least this one didn't take place in some sort of hospital.
SPOILERS DO FOLLOW:
What I particularly liked was the mate/mate thing at the end that will hopefully put an end to this companion mooning after her doctor. Donna's got spunk and i like that. I liked the smug look on her face as she showed the Doctor that she has a second gold pill thingy. I liked her heart to heart with her Grandfather. I thought the talking thru the windows thing was pretty amusing as was the Foster Mother's reaction.
2 small quibbles; if Donna was going to have the Doctor drop by the top of the hill so she could wave at Grampa why leave the carkeys in a trashbin in the alley. (persumably because we needed a reason to see the surprise guest)
The whole diet thing. Lets face it, if someone was to present this diet solution to the hordes of fat people out there, people would pay to do it. Not changes in diet, no exercise. Just take a pill and "give birth" to a fat baby in the middle of the night. Why try to hide it, when you could have people lining up to use your product. In a world where the something weird happens every Xmas eve, I think you could get away with that type of marketing.

Ah, never seen the 5 doctors. But the Key To Time I'll track down.
My memory can do funny things to those episodes (Er, i could have saved myself time and typed nostalgia) for instance when I was a kid Sylvester McCoy was the shit, but now. :( He's absolutely rubbish. I must be the only person in the world who liked Colin Baker.
Those two I mentioned I saw recently and still stood up. The Green Death and Silurians are also pretty solid.
I've actually already seen Inferno, and you are right, it's quite good. It may be blasphemious to say, but i think Pertwee may be my favorite doctor (or it may be that i've only seen good episodes from his run). I've just downloaded the entire 5th Doctor run, and will be slowly working my way thru it in the next few months. It includes the "5 Doctors" so i look forward to seeing that one.
As far as the Baker, Tom episodes go, i really like "City of Death" and "Hand of Fear". I've heard good things about "Genesis" (and sort of remember seeing it way back in the day) but have watched it yet.
I've seen only one Colin Baker episode - Vengence of Varos which wasn't all that bad, and have yet to watch any of McCoy's Doctor...

Not at all. Pertwee's run is fantastic. It's really where the show takes off, for me. The Jon Pertwee/Tom Baker/Peter Davison run (1970-1984) is where it's at, as far as the old series goes. Consistently enjoyable. Highly recommended.

Indeed it would be a brave move. Then again did you watch the "special" afterwards? It could be just a further cover. I obviously don't want to go into too many details for anyone who hasn't watched it yet but...

Tennant is signed on to do some specials next year. It could be some big finale sort of thing, I don't know too much. They didn't show the next "doctor" (my knowledge on the process is low but my flatmate does talk about it alot), so they could just change it around in the finale. They may find some way to change it around by saving him in the Tardis. He may also regenerate as the same physical being.

Tennant is signed on to do some specials next year.
I think we're in major spoiler territory here, so highlight to read further:
Yes, and it's been reported he has already filmed this Years Xmas special. This could have been one of the best mis-directions of all time by the producers to hide his shock departure. Again, I doubt it, but if he is gone...WOW, what a great way to go, you'll never watch the show again thinking everyone will always survive!

I've gone back and done the same with my last post just to be sure.
****Spoilers again****
It would be a nice idea alright. Especially since Tennant said he'd be doing at least another series. It was a good episode too. (Not that I'd have anything to compare it to) Everything seemed to be coming together. I'm going to have to go back now and watch them. Think I'll be able to do the 4 seasons in a week?

Yesterdays ep had some rubbish in it. Russel Davis writes some naff stuff (the Sarah Jane involvement, etc - pointless) although the last three episodes have been his work and they've really been quite awesome indeed.
If you can, watch season 3. The best so far.

Well, I decided to start on season one. I'm four episodes in and I'm hooked. It's very funny. The second episode was very good. Brilliant idea to kick start after the pilot.

****MAJOR SPOILERS*****
Again, I'm playing safe. Highlight to read at your peril... :p
Heard a rumor today; he may not regenerate, but as he was only wounded, would go into an unstable de-generation - like a prolonged regeneration, or something. I'm not too sure what they were on about...
Anywho, he'll slowly die throughout next years 3 specials. Sounds neat.

I know there's not many here who can participate yet because you've yet to see this season, but here are my thoughts on the final episode. Not really any spoilers, just opinion. Highlight to read:
Cop-out beginning.
Poorly written and executed.
Bringing Rose back was pointless. Anti climax.
Sarah Jane and Torchwood did sod all.
The last in every series always ends with something happening to lead into the Xmas special. Not this time. Awesomesuck.

Great I'm all set to watch the last episode tomorrow night and already I have low expectations.

So, I just watched the season finale last night and I didn't think it was as awesomesuck as everyone else. At first I thought it was a grandiose mess. The writers seemed to be adding a lot of importance to events that weren't really that important.
However I thought it ended good and gives way for a nice long break to hopefully come up with some new stories.
Finally, as a kid I loved the Dalek episodes, but 17 years later I'm kind of sick of the Daleks and I wish they go away.

I am going to assume most of you posting this are brits, cause here in america, the episode your mentioning just ended, last friday and I enjoyed it immensely but your right some of it was fairly unnecessary, but I particularly like the end speech by the grandfather to the Doctor was particularly touching and all the rest was gobeldy gook, but yes it was cool, and kinda unimportant, and anticlimatic but nonetheless better than most american television, and now that Im on the subject Im royally pissed that they are remaking life on mars for american tv, the original version is so good why fuck with it, unless they make it a shot for shot, which they wont do, why not just the air the bloody episodes over here, and not have to spend a fortune you horrible tv execs, if I could I would poison you slowly with vinegar in a iv tube and slowly let it drip into your veins, till your writhing in pain and misery

Well, with a long hiatus between obtaining season one and season two. I'm finally up to date. There were some absolutely brilliant episodes.
Spoilers.
Unfortunately the box set I was given for season 3 had major spoilers for someone who hadn't seen it yet. It wasn't like I leafed through the leaflet but it's hard to ignore the front cover. Saxon was the dogs bollox though. Really loved the performance. The only time over the four seasons that I kinda questioned the plot was however in the season 3 finale. I thought it was actually despairing and I was desperately trying to think of how they could pull it back from being so far gone. The whole world thinking "doctor"? I didn't fully buy it but the episode saved itself with Saxon's death.Brilliant.
The stand alone episodes (by which I mean didn't affect major plot) like Blink, The impossible Planet and Silence in the Library were fantastic.
I loved Eccleston, really funny and a hard ass to boot, but Tenant did so much more. He's a very impressive actor.
"Are you my mummy?"
Roll on Christmas.

So simply executed and yet so effective. The lack of movement makes it so much scarier... and on that note, I never thought Doctor Who could be scary, but bloody hell, I was proven wrong.
The whole experience was brilliant. Loved it. One of my top ones for all time.

Very true. It would just go against what they spent so long building up. It's just for a one off though, so it could be a "parallel world" jobbie.

They do need to move on though with new plots. Personally I don't see why they had to get rid of Piper in the first place. I assume it was conflicting schedules but she was great. I'd like some good stand alone episodes for this next rake we'll be getting. Also, I would have preferred for them not to have the tag on at the end of the last episode of season 4. I normally skip the "next time on" bits but I didn't expect the one recently so I didn't have time to stop it. They're way to spoiler happy. Leave some things unknown.

Oh, I liked her. I just think what they did with her should be kept that way. No coming back. I think Pipers comeback cemented that for me - it was unspectacular, and I felt they brought her back for no real purpose other than the fact it would be 'cool'.

Indeed it was. If they had kept the second to last episode the same but had her come back for good, maybe even to *spoiler highlight* learn to love a new doctor, if they had gone ahead with the second to last episode set-up. That would have been cool. On the note of the highlights part. I think it was a bit of a cop out, but I just love him too much in the role for it to change.....yet.
Antonio_Bay
09-09-2008, 07:47 PM
Yes, that cop-out was a major let down, but I'm being contradictive because I didn't want him to leave the role either.
May he play the role for many years until they replace him with John Simms, Patrick Stewart...or Timmy Mallet.

Bah, our ratings are just fine. We don't need Riddick just yet. Nothing Hollywood is required. Unless we can rope in Arnie as an aged Doctor. That would be brilliant.

O.k. so I know I am a Yank. I also know that I have only seen about five episodes of the Christopher Eccleston episodes. Even then only because of a very kind gift from Ireland. (by the way I am totally addicted now and am watching an episode every day after work now)
But.....

Not knowing who he is, my first thought was...Meh.
I was looking forward to the hints that it might be a woman or a black guy. My hetero man crush on Chiwitel Ejiofor just adds to this disappointment I know. But it just seems like another white guy. I thought they wanted to shake things up. Yes he's younger but that's not very different.

I don't know about the choice for the new Doctor. I thought it was strange to announce it so early. It would have been nice to have it as a surprise when the eventual came around.
Just watched the Christmas episode and it was a lot of fun.
