My recent rant about Spielberg's latest effort makes me feel the need to redress the balance somewhat, as I love the man and think he has made some fantastic movies. So what do you all think is his best? I'm an old-school fan, in that my favourite of his movies of his are Duel, E.T., Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, and my all-time fav Spielberg flick: Jaws. What's everyone else's favourite from The Master?

PS. If only he had directed ROTJ....what a movie it could have been (although it still rules!!!!)

Jaws was great, right up there at the top. But as far as the best, I would have to go with Raiders of the Lost Ark... hands down. It's got everything- action, romance, comedy, and Harrison Ford kicking ass and not even bothering with the names- true to the core, 1930's Saturday afternoon fare. Everything a movie is supposed to be. And personally, I have very fond memories of going to see it- Halloween of 1981, just me and my dad...

The last movie of his that I enjoyed through and through and the only one of his I own is "Jurasic Park." One of my favorite scores too.

Prior to that I think I'd have to go with "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" tied with "Raiders of the Lost Arc."

You just reminded me a funny thing my friend did at new year's (although it probably doesn't translate well to print).

We rented a house in the country for a week for New Year's Eve.
When we drove down to the town it was supposed to be in, it took us HOURS to find the place. It was totally secluded. We started going potty, and got the "cabin fever giggles" from being in the car too long. When we finally pulled up to it at 2:00am, it was pitch black and surrounde by a cool mist. We got out of the car and started toward the house, and we were all so relieved to finally be there that one of my friends commented that it was one of those "movie moments". At that point, my freind Paul started humming the Jurassic Park theme, which sent us into hyterics for 10 straight minutes, and we found it impossible to look at each other or say anything for the next hour without breaking down into fits again....

Good times.:D

Raiders is my favorite, then Private Ryan, then Close Encounters. ET dropped after the whole walkie talkie affair.

My recent rant about Spielberg's latest effort

Just curious. Which film are you referring to?

My favourite is Jurassic Park. My first cinema experience, too. Only film I don't like too much of his is Hook, although I always liked the moment Tootles found 'his marbles'.

Glen Close, dressed as a man and stuffed inside the boo box? What's not to like? ;)

Moments, huh. Yeah, I guess you are right. Mine was when the credits started. Then I knew it was over.

Don't kill me, but I think Munich is one of Spielberg's best films. It comes as close as I think he can get to a perfect movie.

But my favorite of his film would probably have to be Raiders of the Lost Ark, for all the same reasons everyone else has mentioned. Second place goes to Close Encounters.

Err... Schindler's List.. and The Color Purple.

I LOVE Catch Me if You Can. And Saving Private Ryan, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Last Crusade, Close Encounters, Jaws, Jurassic Park.

I don't watch Always because I don't like bawling at the television for an hour and a half but it is a great movie.. there's few others that have that effect.

So basically, I love Spielburg. Shit happens. I don't even hate War of the Worlds.

Of all those I've only seen The Twilight Zone Movie... and I can't watch that without thinking of Vic Morrow and those two kids.

I've have a 'sequel ideas rummaged from Spielbergs production bin' column stuck to the side of my monitor. They include his comments. Spelling deliberate. They include:

E.T Vs Jaws - and some Nazis!

Duel 2 - what if the lorry was driven by a dinosore?

The Colour Purpler - This is my best idea ever!

(And Always is a great film.)

I pretty much love everything he's directed except for Hook.

Nonetheless, I AM upset that he and Will Smith are making an American version of Oldboy. Even if they are going back to the source material.
