I just wanted to start a thread about places where you can legally download (or pay to download) songs/albums
now i know the big one is Itunes which costs something like 99 cents a song, but i've found a place that averages about $1.50 for an album www.allofmp3.com it's technically a russian site i believe, but they have a good catalog and you can choose the bitrate/format you want the music in. plus if you fill your account using xfost (the one way you can currently use paypal on it) after you spend x amount you get a bonus. i think after $50 you get 1% bonus of what you put on your account $100 2% etc. i like the site but i was wondering if anyone else knew of other legal mp3 sites.

Do people still pay for their music? ;)
I'm an iTunes whore since they packaged QuickTime and iTunes together and started to offer free tunes and videos.
I've heard of Rhapsody (http://www.real.com/Rhapsody) which uses RealPlayer, Napster (http://www.napster.com) which has its own proprietary software, the same goes for Yahoo (http://music.yahoo.com/) and Sony Connect (http://www.connect.com/). But I dislike RealPlayer. And I don't want to install another component to get music. So, I'm lazy and usually use iTunes.

Do people still pay for their music? .Ahem!!
I know businesses like mine are obsolete, but you don't have to rub my face in it.

Robbo,
I've already told you that I was jealous of your CD-spinning, "High Fidelity" job. And if I lived in your area, I would be at your store every Tuesday.
But, yes, I like getting music digitally. And even if I wasn't using iTunes to get music, I get all of CDs from that Big Yellow Ticket superstore since I'm a Reward Zone member. Sorry, man.
I have the oppurtunity to buy an established used cd store. Though unless the internet dies, I'm not sure I'd make enough money to keep it open.
Soon the only way to sell music will be by song on the internet. That's depressing. I miss going into the music shop and talking to the knowledgable and helpful store clerk about the different types of music. Or singing a song I heard just so he could tell me who sings it, so I can find the album. Why'd they have to get rid of the cool music store?
Someday it'll come back. They'll say it's nostalgic. And people from all over will come, just to see what it was like back in the olden days.
Sorry Robbo. Need a tissue?

You mean, just like in "Field of Dreams"?

Terence Mann: "Ray, people will come Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

In the RollingStone that I got yesterday, there was an article about eMusic (http://www.emusic.com/). I can't go there from work, but according to the article (http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/9404195/emusic_claims_niche_as_indie_itunes), it is iTunes for the indy music fan. $10 per month for 40 downloads that don't disappear if you disenroll like Napster or Yahoo!!

Yeah, sort of. Well, kind of. Actually I was thinking more along the lines of reality. I mean that could never really happen. Well, it could, but you'd have to have a pretty big store to fit a baseball field in it. And protecting all the cd's from the fly balls... You're talking really expensive. But yeah, I guess people would come to see that.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about eMusic. Their download application is not too intrusive and every once and awhile, they'll offer a 100 free downloads for new customers. And it does have a good selection of indie stuff. They even had the New Pornographers latest CD on the site back when I was a member. But, even with my varied tastes, I had a hard time finding music that I really wanted to download.

I know that I'd drive to Iowa for that experience. That or to relive the White Sox Disco Demolition! :D

I download all my music illegally, but it doesn't affect the amount of CD's I buy. If anything, I end up buying more.
I download an album to see if I like it and if I do, I buy it.
Nothing beats owning a hard copy of the album you love.

I mostly use iTunes for podcasts. I still purchase music from stores. Mostly out here it's Ameba (sp?) and I buy records. If I do buy a music, it's a song here and there and I wouldn't have purchased a CD for it.
Someday when I can come visit I will buy some music from you. Do you have any Be Good Tanyas? I heard them at a friends house and really dug them.

I went to both the Berkeley and the San Francisco locations and greatly expanded my vinyl collection. All my souvenir, food, emergency money went out the window while I was in that store.
Do you have any Be Good Tanyas? I heard them at a friends house and really dug them. Not on hand, because we're a second hand store, and the Tanyas really haven't found mainstream success, though I can get things that are in print pretty easily.

Sorry Robbo. Need a tissue?Well, I wouldn't disregard the idea. As long as you have a business plan that covers Plan B you can give it a whirl...especially if you do more than have just used music that brings in people who want to do more than just look at the discs. Have a cool little music shop that has coffee and maybe a open mic night or two during the week. Also, you can still specialize in local bands that want to promo their work but would be lost in the web onslaught. A few comfy thrift store chairs, a used couch, and a staff that enjoys their job and it just might work. Have some used books laying around...stuff that encourages people to congrate with friends and shoot the shit.
I am not sure how saturated the market is where you live. If you were in San Francisco there are probably a 100 places like it. Where you are it could be an untapped market.
