The name says enough, these guys are so amazing. They're all about things that contradict in their 1st album, which is self titled. The only acoustic punk band that is actually cool. Gordon Gano's lyrics and the band's playing is astounding. This album has been out for 23 years and the words of the Violent Femmes are still so true, because the music is timeless.

Ahhhh the Femmes. Brings me back to 1991, when it was the soundtrack to my high school camp. I had a copy of the album on cassette tape (which had been copied about 20 times before) for years. I still crank out the CD every now and then, I still love it. My cousin got to meet them in Sydney last year when they toured. When I asked him what they were like, he said "The music's cool but those guys are really old".
My fave song is still Kiss off:
"I'll take one, one one cause you left me
and two two two for my family
and three three three for my heartache
and four four four for my headaches
and five five five for my lonely
and six six six for my sorrow
and seven seven for n-no tomorrow
and eight eight I forget what eight was for
and nine nine nine for a lost god
ten ten ten ten FOR EVERYTHING EVERYTHING EVERYTHING EVERYTHING"
Hmmmm good times :)

How old are you, like 15 ? I only ask because anyone who was alive in the 80's/90's knows about the "violent femmes". I mean they had the title track for one of the coolest movies of the decade IMO.
Gross Point Blank? ( in case you have not seen it )
Anyway, forget the Femmes and go get Lateralus, then get really baked (because it is so obvious you are a stoner), and listen to the whole album.
*Bam brings out stoner voice*
It will change your life, man. I mean, yeah.

I didn't discover Femmes until Gross Pointe Blank. Of course, I managed to not hear Stairway to Heaven until college. Still not sure quite how that happened.

I actually found out about them last year (when i was 17). Me and a few guys from the local coffee shop went for a ride to smoke, and one of the fellows i was with want to listen to them. Any music's good when you're high, so we let him pop it in and we all loved it instantly.

That movie did a terrible job of portraying Grosse Pointe.

Do you like American Music?
When I was in college I skipped spring break with my sorority sisters in Cancun to go on spring break with my guy friends to Rolla, MO. As odd as that sounds it was one of the best vacations I have ever had, and also very alchohol laden. The Violent Femmes played one of the last nights we were there and it was one bad ass show. So bad ass, in fact, that I passed out during Add It Up and the guys carried me out of the hall as the show got out over their heads like a funeral procession. The pictures are funnier than hell, but will never reach the light of day here.
Such a great band, that no one has been able to replicate.
If also reminds me of being in a car with FanGirl and Karma in Malibu Canyon. :)

Huh. I always associate the Femmes with Reality Bites.

It really reminds people of Reality Bites? I think of My Sharona instead.

Yeah in the first instance of Reality Bites I think of My Sharona.... but if I hear Add it up I still think of Reality Bites.

I started listening to the Femmes in the early nineties. My sister would listen to them and I've loved them since then... same with Nirvana. Loved my sisters music.... hated her.

Ummm. . .I respectfully disagree. As much as I love the Violent Femmes, Ween handles the whole "disjointed teen angst" angle better than the Femmes ever did. Ween is also more bizarre. . .and cool. So there.

Respectfully disagree on what? Ween, who I do enjoy, sounds nothing like the Femmes and I would not consider them a replication in any way. There are a standalone unit.
Or are you disagreeing with me passing out.
Or are you disagreeing with me being in a car with FanGirl.
Or did you not really read the post.
Or did you read somebody else's post and reply to mine.
Or did you read the post and find yourself wishing I had said "The Violent Femmes were the greatest band ever to tackle the "disjointed teen angst" angle." so you would have someting to argue about.
So there. Now go put some coke on my dick and see what happens.
