In light of my new job, I'm curious as to how many of you guys use video on demand (via your cable provider) and what you think of it.

If you are referring to my cable system offering videos on demand, then yes I use it. I freaking LOVE it. The one thing we do not have in the downtown area where I live is a rental place. When the boyunit and I want to watch a movie we use this option a lot. It's so cool to just scan through the old and new ones.

I've heard of it, but never used it nor knows how it works.

I use it quite a lot, I like how they put some offbeat things in there. We tend to buy a movie a week using it. I have the HD-DVR, my biggest complaints about it are:

- The controls are different from the DVR (i.e. no 4x FF or RW probably due to transfer rate). You think they could skip every so many frames or something. I accidentally dropped a 3 hour movie the other night and it took like 15 min to get back to the part I wanted to watch.

- There is no way to save something On Demand, so if I found my favorite movie and wanted it saved on my DVR, no luck.

Other grips about my Comcast use:

- There is no way to use the DVR hard drive externally on my computer. I have to use it like a VCR, playback and capture for recording a show to DVD.

- There is no Jump 10 sec. FF button like I have seen on TIVO.
[/griping]

Man, I watch too much TV.

Craig pretty much watches HD On Demand stuff exclusively. He has the cheapest HD package that he can get just so that he can watch the free On Demand stuff.

We don't have Tivo brand DVR, but we do have the Jump 10 sec. FF button...bitch!

Pffffft,

I think that commercials are going to have to get more creative, I heard that a KFC commercial would 'show a secret message' when played backwards, this was to try to grab viewers attention. Sometimes when 4xFF through a bunch of commercials I will stop if something looks cool.

JJ - On Demand stuff is almost all free, but a Pay Per View section has the new releases, that is the stuff I buy. I could probably wait a month and see it on TMC, HBO, or Encore but I am an instant gratification type of guy and can't help it.

Oh and Jk - another gripe, sell a bigger server. I need more entertainment! 25,000 hrs On Demand, 900 channels, 40 hrs on the DVR, and nothing on.

Did I mention I watch to much TV?

I can't help you there- all I do is capture and encode media and send it to aggregate servers- from there it goes to the cable heads... from there to your house. Once it leaves here, I don't really have anything to with it. Sorry.

Do you also write the short synopsis on the show when pushing the info button?

I used it to placate the boy when he wants to watch Jack's Big Music Show or Oobi. Yes, I am the model parent.

I don't write it, but I do proof-read it- every single one of them... Log management actually writes it.

Can you edit the info for being misleading? I watched the movie 'Run' the other night because it sounded interesting. It had early Patrick Dempsey and a great info line. I watched it and want my 91 minutes back.

Your job sounds cool. Sneak in a Movie Poop Shoot reference for us when you have to edit the Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back synopsis.

I doubt that TBS would ever get the rights to air JSBSB...

Maybe twenty years from now it may air on TCM...

God, can you imagine what those kids would be like logging in here? Their parents probably aren't even born yet...

BTW, this was my 2,222 post.

On Demand in my area is only available with digital cable... as of yet I still can't justify paying the extra for 400 more channels, which are simply rehashes of existing channels. Perhaps one day I'll give in to the premium channels, but that's what friends and bars are for.

I can't really say much yet, but eventually... broadband.

I haven't seen anything yet. We're almost done with June programming... still waiting for July.
