So I have just completed a small project of songs for two seperate compliation CD's. The theme? One called "Love" and one called "Hate".

Given these two themes, why not throw out what your own mix tapes would include...

For my next CD, assuming it will ever be my turn again, I thought about making a "The Who Sell Out," CD that has every Who song that appears in a commercial. Then I realized that every Who song appears in a commercial.

So, I decided to go with a "Who Sells Out?" CD. Same idea, but not just using Who songs. I'm nowhere near having a finalized list, but these will probably be on it:

Iggy Pop's Lust For Life
CCR's Fortunate Son
Postal Service's Such Great Heights
Any Who song
Any Moby song
Trio's Da Da Da

I probably need to modernize the list a little.

I adore The Cure's Pictures of You, but that was tough after the commerical. (HP)
Bodeans - Closer to Free (Party of Five)
The Cars - Just What I Needed (used to love it, now want to stab myself in the eye whenever the stupid Circuit City commercial song comes on
Led Zepplin - Rock n Roll (Cadillac)
Robert Palmer - Simply Irresistable (Applebees)

I had a buddy who worked for Office Depot. He hated the job, but after he quit he said the worst part, hands down, was the playing of Taking Care Of Business every ten minutes.

...by the way about the use of Lust For Life, do you think Caribbean Cruises really has paid attention to the fact that the jingle they use mentions "Ear Fucking"?

I thought that "I’ve had it in the ear before." was a heroin reference?

He's clearly a Van Morrison rip off.Oh, I only say that because the first time I heard his album, I thought I was listening to bonus tracks from Adams' Love is Hell, which was released just prior.

I would go for Gram Parsons rip off.

David Gray is a Van Morrison rip off.

Consequently, I love them both.

Chris Isaak is a Roy Orbison faker and he made it onto the same mix CD in question.

Fuck Her Gently - Tenacious D
Pointless but funny Tenacious D tidbit:
The first time I saw them live and they played this song, instead of singing, "And then I'm gonna fuck you discreeeetlyyyy" Jack Black sang, "And then I'll fucking fuck Jason Prieeeestleyyyy". It made me cough my beer up, I laughed so hard.

Chris Isaak is a Roy Orbison faker and he made it onto the same mix CD in question. You have heard Gram Parsons, but not realized it. He was the lead singer of The Byrds after David Crosby left. He then subsequently split off to do his own then-unique brand of country rock. It lead to the rise of alt-country and people and bands like Wilco and Ryan Adams.

He also has one of the more interesting death stories. His body was stolen by his manager in intention of doing a funeral pyre -

During the funeral ceremony for Gram's close friend Clarence White, Gram was overheard stating that when he died, rather than being buried in the ground, he would like to be taken out to The Joshua Tree desert of southern California and burned. After Gram died in The Joshua Tree Inn, his body was taken to the Los Angeles International Airport in preparation for being flown to Louisiana for burial. Gram's road manager Phil Kaufman and a friend, Michael Martin, got very intoxicated, borrowed a broken down hearse and drove to LAX to retrieve the body. When they arrived, they told the shipping clerk that Gram's remains were to be sent out of another airport, flashed some bogus paperwork and falsely signed for the body. After crashing into a wall and almost being arrested, Phil, Michael and Gram drove back to The Joshua Tree Desert, stopping only to buy more beer and a container of gasoline. They took Gram's remains into the desert, poured gasoline inside the coffin and set him ablaze. The two were arrested several days later and fined $700.00 for stealing and burning the COFFIN (it was is not against the law to steal a dead body). Gram's partially burned remains were finally laid to rest in a modest cemetery near New Orleans, LA.

I really do love Chris Issak, especially live. He is so versitile. I wish they had his series The Chris Issak Show on DVD. That was one of the more interesting shows I have seen on TV...especially the topless mermaid/muse.

The only song that I would recommend is this song by Hanson (yes, Hanson) called 'Save Me.' It is one of the best love songs I've heard in a while and very romantic.

But, other than that, I wouldn't be so much help. The mixed cd features 'Straight Outta Compton' by N.W.A. followed by 'This Love' by Maroon 5.

I'm sharing the love for Chris Isaak. That dude is hella sexy and funny - the perfect combo. Not-at-all-interesting Chris Isaak anecdote: My sister and I were doing an impromptu roadtrip up to Kalbarri (about 6hrs north of perth) and we started singing "We're on the road again" but for some reason we kept segueing into Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing, so it went something like this: "We're on the road again [bow bow bow bow] you ever loved someone so much you thought your little heart was gonna break in two..."

hmmmm... I guess you had to be there...

Love:

Don't Know Much (Aaron Neville and Linda Ronstadt)
Chances (Air Supply)
Hard to Say I'm Sorry (Chicago; Az Yet's version is good too)
Somewhere in the Night (Barry Manilow)
Back at One (Brian McKnight)
Without You (Mariah Carey)
I Never Knew Lonely (Vince Gill)
How Do I Live (Trisha Yearwood)
Anymore (Travis Tritt)
Don't Take the Girl (Tim McGraw)
I Could Not Ask For More and No Place that Far (Sara Evans)
He Stopped Loving Her Today (George Jones)

There are tons more I can list, but I didn't want it to be too long of a list. Just about every Sade song could be added to the list, thats for sure.

Hate/Anger:

This is a very hard list to come up with, as there are many good groups out there with many songs that would fit under this category. I think it would just be easier to lists the groups I would select songs from to make this mix.

Rage Against the Machine
Disturbed
Metallica
Megedeth
Anthrax
Monster Magnet
Prodigy
Godsmack
Danzig
Pantera
Ministry
Machine Head
Henry Rollins
Biohazard
Sepultura
Filter
Slayer
