View Full Version : February '06 Intro Thread: Ryall's Final Edition

So, today's my final day running things at the site. This explains it in a bit more detail:

http://www.moviepoopshoot.com/onehand/168.html

So as of now, I'm a civilian like everyone else here. Since I'm leaving (and so is Scott Tipton, Scott Bowden and Joshua Jabcuga), let's make this all about us one time, and then you're all done with me. Can't believe I'm about to be an equal with Razorback...

1. Favorite "Chris Ryall" moment at the site?

2. Favorite Comics 101 column?

3. Who'd win in a fight, Scott Bowden and his rasslin' background, or Josh Jabcuga and his jiu-jitsu background?

4. While I still have the Ban Stick, who should I beat with it as a going-away present?

5. What would you like to see happen at the site while I'm gone?

That's all I got. But I'm sure I'll still be around these parts from time to time. This feels really weird.

Damn, dude, give me some time to get re-focused. I'm in the denial phase right now. Gonna miss you, man. Good luck in the future. I'll get back to this thread later. Right now I'm just gonna go curl up in the fetal position and hug myself for awhile.

Even though my join date is low, I do not have a long enough active history around here to answer any of your questions. But I have enjoyed the hell out of what you have built, and respect all of the hard you that you have put into it. It really shows.

Thanks also for letting the wife & kids contribute. You don't know how proud that has made me feel. Well maybe you do NOW, as you're starting down the daddy path.

It won't be the same around here, and I don't really know if I'll visit as often. The obvious personal attention that you give to the site is what made this fun for me. It's hard to understand why this had to happen. As one who manages people in my own realm, I know how hard it is to find and keep people like you who put in the extra effort and take "ownership" of their work.

I will see you at comicon for sure. Keep Goth & I up to date on the Continuing Adventures of Ryall!

I feel the same as By-tor right now. I can't really respond to the survey until I can process everything. I'm going to miss you, Boss-man.

My favorite Ryall moment was not at this site:

All hail the Chrischarger!

See you at comics101.com!

Dammit where's the crying emoticon????

I expected something of the sort with you being Top Banana at IDW but I'm a little bit shattered right now.

Now comes the anger phase - Screw you mister, I'm not going to bother answering your damn questions.

I will say that my fave Scott moment on the site is the headlines on the site right now - the "I heard Nicholas Cage wants to play..." on almost every article! Classic.

1. Favorite "Chris Ryall" moment at the site?
There are too many and too numerous to count...seriously. You and I had such similar tates in music that I would often feel totally wierded out :)

2. Favorite Comics 101 column?
I will fully admit that I don't read this particular column, since I tend toward the movie and music side of the site.

3. Who'd win in a fight, Scott Bowden and his rasslin' background, or Josh Jabcuga and his jiu-jitsu background?
I will vote for Josh, because then we could have the soundtrack for the fight done by Hank III.

4. While I still have the Ban Stick, who should I beat with it as a going-away present?
There are people here who are royal idiots, however they provide me the ability to rant at someone without feeling the subsequent guilt. That aside, why not ban Matthew as an early birthday present to FanGirl. ;)

5. What would you like to see happen at the site while I'm gone?
I would like to see you use that extra time to come back to the boards more often, now that you will be a mere mortal. We miss you!

That's all I got. But I'm sure I'll still be around these parts from time to time. This feels really weird.
I can't quite describe it, but I feel really really sad to know that you are leaving. It's selfish to want someone to stay exactly where they are and not move on. Selfish or not, that is they way I want it. So it's with more than a bit of wistfulness that I wish you luck away from the day-to-day grind of managing this site.

If you were to ask the pragmatic me five years ago that I would have met so many great people because of a website with "poop" in the title I would have called you nuts. But here we are, and it's the culture you set that created this wierd little community of friends and lovers. You should be proud of that, most of all. Good night, and good luck my friend. ...and if you don't keep in touch I will re-program you tv to play nothing but Family Guy reruns.

Man, you get to do the coolest shit! But, I think we all kinda feel like this zombie guy right about now, funk soul brother. Hey, I just realized that I have a shirt just like that - minus most of the blood spatter.

Thanks very much for this. It does feel really weird and wrong to no longer be involved with something that occupied pretty much every single day of my life for the last 180 weeks or so.

I have to say, my best moment has to be being involved with a site that begat this message board that led to two people getting married. Isn't that about the greatest thing ever? I love that the place helped people meet interesting new people, on top of everything else.

And I was happy to have Tracy contribute to the site--she and the girls were a very welcome addition to the site (and I kept copies of all the columns, so as soon as Lucy's of a reading age, I'll know what comics to throw into her hands, and not just a 30 Days of Night TPB that I have lying around here).

Endings suck. I'm very much feeling this ending today, which is why the questions above were pretty lackluster--just didn't have it in me. But the good thing about endings is that they lead to beginnings, and tomorrow's a beginning of something new, so we'll see where it all leads.

I'm right with you. I've been in a funk about it, too. Hard to do something for as long as I've done this and not feel weird about it.

The fact that you mention my distaste for Family Guy and Josh's Hank III music choice makes me happy and sad at once. Like, it's flattering and amazing that you and others have followed the nonsense we spouted here and remember it to quote it back to me. Which makes it all the harder to believe that it's all come to an end. However, I DO plan to take my Family Guy wisecracks with me to Comics101.com, anyway. The Nic Cage jokes stay here, I guess, since we're not doing news any more. Hence the parting gift of "Nic Cage greatest hits" headlines today.

favourite memory was the odd emails I used to send you back in 03 that you replied to with great humor and patience

seriously, you were so warm and welcoming to any stupid comment I felt the need to spew that I was genuinely taken back by it all

And i sincerely hope that while you might be writing/working for another site that it doesnt mean you cant still post to us malcontents here!

I am so very sad to hear this, and I do not know what to say!

I will answer your questions once I have had time to search and think about eveything that has happened in two years.

I will say that I am going to miss you man.I have ( from this board anyway) seen you get married, write a comic book, have a Baby, and now you are leaving. :( :( :(

Holy Fucking Shitballs Batman!

Like most of the others have said already, i feel like curling up on the couch getting under an afgan and rocking back and forth with my knees tucked under my chin (the fact that it's been drizzling rain all morning isn't helping matters at all... And while i can't say that i didn't know that this would happen one day (you were getting much busier with the IDW job), it doesn't make it any easier now that you are going away. I can tell you this, i have already bookmarked Comic101 so when that site is ready to go, i'll be there. Will it have a messageboard, i wonder?

On to the questions:
Fav Ryall moment - frankly, i cant think of anything specific, i liked the way you handled the shitstorm that happened when these boards changed over. I also looked forward to reading "Clapping" every week, it was always great, and i'll miss it. But most of all i like the fact that though we've never met, and more than likely never will, i consider you (and all the folks that post here) a friend. I don't know that i ever thought that was something that was possible from reading a particular website, honestly.

Fav 101 - The Giffen League one

Fight Fight! - I'm going with that badass jiu-jitsu, cause rasslin's fake.

Ban Stick - I don't know, it's hard to type thru all these tears.....

Site Bidness - I'd like to see the site carry on much as before, frankly i don't know how it can though....

So, I'm guessing it wasn't just a horrible nightmare after all. I hoped when I saw the news last nite that I'd log in this morning and heave a great sigh of relief. But, alas, to no avail. I was obviously not dreaming. PLEASE, Chris, do not just completely leave us. You are still, and will always be our friend, and The Poop Lord. I am so now looking forward to the Great And Secret Show comic. I've never been one for comics, but I believe now, that that has changed. Take care and never forget us here. We won't forget you. Love ya, man.:)

Wow....
*takes a minute to take all that in* (no, that's not a porn star quote)

... Well, Ryall - I guess the least I can do is congratulate you, you're moving on to bigger things. (It would've said bigger and better things, but the better part seems more based on a selfish perspective at this point- think of it more as a bunch of kids not wanting dad to leave even though him and mom don't love each other anymore.)
Anyway, back to congratualting part... I do enjoy your one hand column very much, sad to see it go, though I will be checking your comic column out to see how TGASS is moving along and any other projects that come your way. I've finally bought and read the Shaun of the Dead comic. I really enjoyed it. Thank you for doing such a wonderful job (on the comic and this site). You'll be missed. "Enjoy your vacation."

I hope we're lucky enough to catch some details on your Clive interview. :)

Okay.... roof leaking drastically, I can live with that, flue and sickness for 2 weeks, I can life with that, Family friend of 15 years died on saturday just gone... I can't get my head around that just yet and need to book time off for the funeral, aside from that, having today recieved a letter saying I have to do Jury Service, I can't help that feel all that and now this might result in 2006 not being a good year for me. I'm not totally freaked out yet though it's just too much to absorb in 2 weks

1. Favorite "Chris Ryall" moment at the site?
The banning of those 13 year old summer kids, I forgot what you said when you did it but it was cool.

2. Favorite Comics 101 column?
The weeks after weeks of batman.

3. Who'd win in a fight, Scott Bowden and his rasslin' background, or Josh Jabcuga and his jiu-jitsu background?
Scott if it was wrestling, Eric Bischoff is a black belt in some martial art and he was always getting his ass kicked.

4. While I still have the Ban Stick, who should I beat with it as a going-away present?
Any of the girls who refuse to partake chocolate pudding wrestling.

5. What would you like to see happen at the site while I'm gone?
I don't know, you haven't been around much anyway so as long as the boards stay active and we all commute among ourselves we should manage.

That's all I got. But I'm sure I'll still be around these parts from time to time. This feels really weird.
Thanks for the fun times, and for adapting Shaun and MGS, which by the way I picked up volume 2 and it concluded in that same TPB, very nice adaptation that cut a few corners which were only needed in the game to span it out a bit longer anyway, I'll be sure to check out the Silent hill stuff that Ian mentioned in his column of Game on.

This is a sack of quarters to the solar plexus. And the lunar one too. I honestly can't / don't want to narrow down favorite moments. There's a reason we all care about this site, we defend our boards like we do, we support those who move on like we do, and that reason, well, the place has a personality. It has running jokes, faces to those making the place happen, a sense of community, all stuff you gave it that other sites don't pull off and print magazines don't attempt. You'll be missed on that side of the fence, but seriously stick around over here, wontcha? We'll be over at the 101 as well.

Still in shock... damn...

Okay, now that I've had a little bit of time to think about it, here are my two cents.

This site has become part of my personal life. I've made real-life friends here, shared a column with my kids here (how many moms get to do that?) -- hell, my best friend met her husband here. I owe a big thank you to Denyse for getting me into this mess.

Chris and Scott, those insane workaholics, put more bloody work into this site than I think anyone else would or could have. I mean, I had enough trouble getting a column written once every other week for three months of the year. These guys were working on this thing every stinking day for years, outside of their regular jobs. On top of that, they have both been nothing but wonderful to me and to my family.

The boards and the site have always been two very different things. Hopefully I’ll have a few minutes here and there to check in with all you nutballs on the board, but as far as the site goes, for me, it just won’t be the ‘Shoot with Ryall and Tipton.

1. Ryall moment: A few good ones come to mind, but I'm feeling sentimental. The first thing I thought of was the post you made after code6 died. This is kind of a similar thing.....the integrity of the place has changed. An era is closing.

4. Banstick beatdown: Oooh! Ooooh! Me! Me! Me! Sweet kinky messageboard martyrdom!

5. What should happen while you're gone: Things go up and not come down.

Quite saddend now. As stalkerish as this may sound, Ryall is the reason I started hanging around this site. I was impressed with the fact that this site had a personal touch made this site feel like a hangout as well a groovy place to get your Nick Cage headlines. Hell, after winning the Motorhead contest that we had about a year ago, it reignited my cooled love affair with the works of Lemmy and the gang.

Bon Voyage to the departing troubadours you will be missed but I hope your future endeavors are fruitful.

Questions.....what questions?

Questions.....what questions?"Who'd win in a wrestling contest? Lemmy or God?"

"God."

But, Ryall ruled here.

This has been a day of ups and downs for me- I'm closing on my first house, got a new job with some cutting-edge technology, and then I find out the Lord of Poop is abdicating the throne. Kind of a bummer, but regardless- a Hale and Hearty farewell, Chris Ryall...

As for the question about what I'd like to see happen with the site when you're gone... I don't know- this place is like a home here on the internet (or at least some kind of hostel) I'd be afraid of banging my knee on a coffee table in the dark if things moved around too much...

But, as I said in another post, things change, that's nature of the world, the trick is to roll with it and somehow grow stronger for it-

Good luck to you and yours. Don't be a stranger.

Ryall,

I have lurked around here for quite some time and you will be missed, I fear change, and you leaving will be a big one. To answer your questions:

1 - Has to be the fallout from this (http://moviepoopshoot.com/onehand/114.html) column, the 15 post (http://moviepoopshoot.com/forums/showthread.php?p=72618#post72618) has the link to the Van Halen thread (it moved, dang). Da-yum that was funny "to be mocked by Van Halen fans". Oh, and your single best post is this. (http://moviepoopshoot.com/forums/showpost.php?p=69575&postcount=106)

4 - I don't know but don't argue with the guy in Charge. (http://moviepoopshoot.com/forums/showpost.php?p=39456&postcount=20)

5 - Now that this isn't buisness, take a break, come visit, and roast a newb like you always wanted.

1. Favorite "Chris Ryall" moment at the site? That time you posted a response to someone about me and acted like you didn't know the answer to the question you posed in return. That was my favorite Ryall moment because it showed me that you had some hardcore class.

2. Favorite Comics 101 column? How can I pick a favorite?

3. Who'd win in a fight, Scott Bowden and his rasslin' background, or Josh Jabcuga and his jiu-jitsu background? Josh Jabcuga, of course. Unless Scott Bowden had a script and had practiced the moves for a week.

4. While I still have the Ban Stick, who should I beat with it as a going-away present? Do it already! I have been asking for it for years!

5. What would you like to see happen at the site while I'm gone? I become a featured writer with my "Why AICN is an absolute joke" column.

So, today's my final day running things at the site. This explains it in a bit more detail:

http://www.moviepoopshoot.com/onehand/168.html

Well, good riddance to bad rubbish I always say.

So as of now, I'm a civilian like everyone else here. Since I'm leaving (and so is Scott Tipton, Scott Bowden and Joshua Jabcuga), let's make this all about us one time, and then you're all done with me. Can't believe I'm about to be an equal with Razorback...
You're moving into your momses basement?

1. Favorite "Chris Ryall" moment at the site?

Since you're leaving us I'm going to break your little rules Mr. Fancy pants. My favorite CR moments were a handful of private exchanges we shared. But I'd better not reveal any more, lest someone become aware of our tawdry, torrid, forbidden man-love. Because I swore I'd always keep that secret.

2. Favorite Comics 101 column?
I believe it's the one that led to the discussion of how much cooler Batman was before little fairy Robin came along.

3. Who'd win in a fight, Scott Bowden and his rasslin' background, or Josh Jabcuga and his jiu-jitsu background?
Why can't they just learn to just love one another?

4. While I still have the Ban Stick, who should I beat with it as a going-away present?
Howzabout that pesky Ming guy , with all his multiple forum mumbo jumbo? Jeez! How many clicks does it take to get to the chewy moviepoopshoot center of a new moviepoopshoot post?

5. What would you like to see happen at the site while I'm gone?
Naked dancing girls.

That's all I got. But I'm sure I'll still be around these parts from time to time. This feels really weird.
Did you ever know that you're my hero ? You are the wind beneath my Wingman.

(Even though if you understand atmospheric pressure and aerodynamics, you know it's the wind ABOVE the wings that keeps the plane aloft.)

I thank you for the time you've shared with us. And the advice and the free editing. For being the great Chief you are, for the friend and mentor and... for just being you.

I wish you all the love happiness this world can provide you. Or as the Klingons say " Kaplagh !"

It took me a couple of days to work up the courage to answer these. I had to fight through the tears and the denial, and just give into my anger. So, here ya go, Boss.

1. Favorite "Chris Ryall" moment at the site? The first time you replied to one of my e-mails. Not only was it prompt, but it wasn't an auto-response type thing. I knew you were going to be super-cool after that.

2. Favorite Comics 101 column? The Daredevil one, since that was always my favorite superhero.

3. Who'd win in a fight, Scott Bowden and his rasslin' background, or Josh Jabcuga and his jiu-jitsu background?Bowden, without question. You people obviously have no background in wrestling psychology. Bowden's a heel. Anytime the heel manager is booked against someone that should kick his ass, the heel manager always wins. I'm sure Jabcuga would break out the crane technique, and as soon as he hits it, out comes Jerry "the King" Lawler to disctract the ref. As soon as that happens, the Florida State fight song comes over the loud speaker, and the crowd pops to see Scott's uncle Bobby lumbering down the aisle. Uncle Bobby grabs the Florida State football helmet, and begins to verbally admonish his nephew. But without warning, Uncle Bobby turns and hits Josh square between the eyes with the FSU helmet. The crowd is stunned, and the referee slowly turns and sees Scott covering Josh and counts three. Josh doesn't stand a chance.

4. While I still have the Ban Stick, who should I beat with it as a going-away present? What a great question? That BROKEN person, with his hawking of his movie that no one intends to watch. Get rid of him and his thread.

5. What would you like to see happen at the site while I'm gone?A little more control given to the regulars. We should have an elitist regular committee, that can ban at will. Then we could have a huge power struggle within that group. That, and can you convince Efexeye to come back? He certainly won't be able to replace your void, but we need to have somebody we enjoy return.

That's all I got. But I'm sure I'll still be around these parts from time to time. This feels really weird.
It feels wierd for us too. To think, I almost got to meet you finally as I was ruining my life in California. As you said, I'm sure there's a Comi-con sometime. Until then, Bro.

So, today's my final day running things at the site.
Damn. It's been a real cool run.

1. Favorite "Chris Ryall" moment at the site?
I want to say it was the time I won a Scarface SE DVD by using the words "Shatner" and "Abso-fucking-tively" in a sentence but honestly, it's all about the previous message board.

I felt a lot like I do now when I logged in one day a few years ago and found the only message board I had ever loved was gone. That the epic war between those who understood the humor in Kevin's movies vs. those who merely tried to imitate it had lead to total annihilation of the boards. But that devastation was followed a few months later by the opening of the new boards and lo, only the cool members did return. It's been even better ever since.

In a few years of these boards, some damn cool people have come and gone. And it wasn't always a happy parting.
Our lives have changed and we've moved and we've endured our private crises and our public feuds but I think it's always been worth it. It's always been nice to have the boards here. The boards that you created Mr. Ryall. You da man.

The moral of this story is that as crappy and weird as this feels now, I realize that it is in the name of cooler things to come. Thanks for the memories.

2. Favorite Comics 101 column?
I always thought Tipton's replies to the emails were sometimes even better than the column.

3. Who'd win in a fight, Scott Bowden and his rasslin' background, or Josh Jabcuga and his jiu-jitsu background?
They should form a tag team and take on personalities from other websites.

4. While I still have the Ban Stick, who should I beat with it as a going-away present?CamelToe. Just once more. For the sake of the good ol' days.

5. What would you like to see happen at the site while I'm gone?I'd like your job. Kidding.

That's all I got. But I'm sure I'll still be around these parts from time to time. This feels really weird. The space between the first "time" and the second "time" you mention better not be measured in years. That's all I'm saying.

Wow! I don't show up for almost a week and come back to this. I guess all I can say is good luck with everything that lays ahead for you and that you will be missed and that touch of personality you add to this site will also be missed.

1. Favorite "Chris Ryall" moment at the site?
I guess it would have to be that time I actually won a prize in one of your contests. See everyone, it does pay to read the articles on the site. Well, not just for the chance to win a prize, but also for the fun and entertainment.

2. Favorite Comics 101 column?
Like Zens, I am not really a big fan of the comics. I like to read them, but I prefer the articles on movies, DVDs, TV show, and music over the ones on comics. I guess it is because I don't really read enough of them to even follow a storyline for very long.

3. Who'd win in a fight, Scott Bowden and his rasslin' background, or Josh Jabcuga and his jiu-jitsu background?
Since wrestlers can take a chair or ring-bell to the head without even leaving a mark, when it would probably either knock-out or even kill the average person, I would have to say Scott.

4. While I still have the Ban Stick, who should I beat with it as a going-away present?
Well, I really haven't been around enough to even have the opportunity for someone to really piss me off. So, I guess I would have to agree with Zens and say Matthew. I think he was the last person I was annoyed with. Not because he did anything to me directly, but because all of his fights ruined so many threads for me. There were a lot of them I thought I would be interested in, but just left them because of all of the stupid fights.

5. What would you like to see happen at the site while I'm gone?
A. To see you come here and post every once in a while. You know, like the rest of us little people.
B. To see Ming keep up the high standards of the site and to continue to provide us with a fun place to visit on the web. Hell, he has always done a good job in the past, so I don't see any problems with him being even more involved with the site.

I actually talked to Fran a bit on Monday, and I'd like to see that, too. I don't know if he or Denyse are ever gonna post here again, but there didn't seem to be any animosty, by any means. So I think that'd be a cool thing to see them both back here.

That might have been one of my favorite times going back in the archives. FXI could duke it out with the best of 'em.

Awww, man, if he come's back I won't be ale to use my ID around here anymore...and the bartender's gonna give me the bums rush...

Actually, it'd be nice to have him back, but I'll probably be leaving once another site gets up and running.

1. What is a "Chris Ryall" moment? I can tell you why I appreciated you, if that's ok: you convinced me that Family Guy was worthless, that Arrested Development was great, and that Gilmore Girls was worth watching. And to think, I hated almost all TV before I started visiting the site.

2. It'd have to be the one on Batman: The Animated Series. Or maybe the Silver Surfer one, which convinced me that I needed to go buy some of the old comics (I'm not that big a comics guy, and what little I know, I know because of Comics 101)

3. I used to be really into Pro-Rasslin', so I'm gonna have to go with Bowden here.

4. I'm brand new to the message boards. Anyone, as long as it's not me.

5. Your triumphant return.

Thanks.

Yeah I guess I didn't even realize there was a message board for the two + years I've been visting the site . . . actually I've been here more or less since the beginning. I remember when it was just a joke from JSBSB, but I came home from the movie to see if it was a real site, and lo and behold . . . it kind of was.

But I've been here constantly since the first Comics 101, for sure.

As far as I remember, there was only 1 board member I majorly fought with, the rest were just results of that and my own stupid defensiveness.

I think you guys need to let this go for god's sake. I don't think I have been an ass to anyone that lives here for a long time.. August I think, and I am enjoying this place again.

If you are still upset about that point and time in poopshoot history, MOVE ON ALREADY!

Besides, I don't believe in on-line fights. It's not like anyone wins anything.

I didn't say I wanted you banned. I missed 99% of the arguments anyway. Just because I have a friend who enjoys SPAM and wants a can of it for her birthday doesn't mean I also like SPAM.

I may like SPAM actually, but I won't try it because it's composition scares me...as a side note.

Fry it in a skillet with some light olive oil and herbs and then put it in a sandwich with lots of mustard.

I don't touch the stuff, myself.

Of course, you have to slice it thin when you fry it. That way, it is kind of crispy.
