I know Clarence Carter best because of the ubiquitous wedding reception hit "Strokin," but I know he's had other hits that are nothing like that song. I'm pretty sure he did the original version of "Everybody Plays the Fool." I remember listening to the radio and hearing a 70's classic and then the DJ said it was Clarence Carter to my absolute shock. It was a song that "Strokin" should have no correlation with, but now I can't figure out what it is.

So, two questions:

1. Any help or ideas?

2. I've thought about trying to figure out this mystery at least a dozen times while driving in my car, or at a wedding reception, or some other place where I don't have access to the internet........and then completely forget to investigate when I have the opportunity. Do any of you have any useless nagging questions like these?

Yeah, I spent a good half hour at AllMusic. I just thought I would throw this out there for some help.

I've got a story about Strokin' to tell, also. Junior year of high school, me and my girlfriend broke up right before homecoming. So, a girl from my church invited me to her homecoming. Now my high school was considered the "ghetto" school (not that anything resembling a ghetto exists in Colorado Springs...but that was its reputation.) Her school was the ritziest in town - the sort of school were nobody's mom works because their dad is pulling in $100,000+ per year. So I'm at the homecoming and I hear Strokin' for the first time in my life. I was such a square that I was thinking to myself, "I can't believe that this is allowed to be played here," while all the other kids are getting excessively freaky to it. I felt quite naive that night.

Despite the fact that I know Strokin', I had never heard of Clarence Carter until Karma brought him up on Friday...then while filling up the CO2 tank for my kegerator later that day, the lady working there said, "Shit, I left my Clarence Carter CD at home"...
