Next to my columns and ONE HAND CLAPPING ... and everybody elses columns of course, because they are all so good, COMICS 101 has been my favorite new addition to the site.

Reading his column puts me in that 1950's TV headspace.

Right about here, imagine all those 1950 sci-fi movie sound effects, or the narrative from the Superman television series, starring George Reeves.

After attempting to contact him through telepathy and failing, I resorted to the common Earth method of email to tell him so and he replied ...

"I learned to read from comics when I was around two. I can't ever remember not having a giant stack of Marvel, DC and other comics close by. The frightening part is that so far I haven't done a single bit of research for the column. All right off the top of my head."

So there you have it, kids. Another bang-up job by ace comics historian, Scott Tipton.

I'll be tuning in for future exciting episodes, that's for sure.

It is a damn good column. It's also kinda scary if that is just coming off the top of his head. Now that you're mentioning 50's sound effects and voice overs, I can't get that 'Wonderman!' sketch from SNL out of my head. Damn you Robert Smigel.

Even for a longtime comic buff, its nice to get a little refresher course on stuff you might not know.

Couldn't agree more. As a casual comic book fan, the column is a great way to expose more potential readers to some of the characters and publishing companies.

On a side note, I emailed my question and had a personal answer back within a day! Keep up the great work!

/forums/images/icons/cool.gif I absolutly love this collumn!!!
I'm 15 and I actually didn't really get into comics till like 3 years ago. I was wondering where we could go to email the dude who does this thing?
Anywho I've always been a fan of super hero films like Batman and stuff but now I'm actually goin back to the original old school [censored] that all of these series were based off of.
I also reallly like Ultimate Marvel comix... /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

I enjoy the column. I've been collecting for years but I like how the author doesn't just rehash trivia. It seems fresh and interesting even though I know a lot of it.
I do hope that he delves into some of Marvels characters like Blade.

Hey, Erik--

Thanks for hanging out here, man. As to this:

>I'm 15 and I actually didn't really get into comics till like 3 years ago. I was wondering where we could go to email the dude who does this thing?

Either go to the column itself and click on "E-Mail Author" at the top or bottom of the piece, or just send an e-mail to Scott at stipton99x@moviepoopshoot.com.

I too love the Comics 101 stuff. It's always the first thing I read on Wednesdays. The title I would like to see covered, though it's no longer active, is "Preacher". For my money, it is the greatest, finite series to date.

I agree with you...although Vertigo books are definitely "Upper Divison" courses...we need to get through a lot of the basics before trying to explain all of that to people. I might have to do that one when we get to Vertigo--I don't think Scott ever read the book.

Keeping with the Vertigo topic, I am really looking forward to a column about The Sandman. That would be a good read.

Yeah, I guess Vertigo titles will have to be covered in Comics 201.

I read everything. You hear me? Everything.

One request for PREACHER, one for SANDMAN. Check.

Seriously, I'm glad people are digging the column. When I proposed this, I had no idea if anyone would even care about this thing, and I'm stoked at the great response I've been getting, both from newbies and dyed-in-the-wool fanboys.

So keep firing those questions at me, and eventually, I'll try to get to everything.

You really should be proud because I had stopped reading comics until your column came out and reminded me of all the fantastic stuff out there.
Bravo, kind sir. Bravo.
